How would I do that without setting the password for the GUI?

root password same so you can't. Why don't you want a password for webUI?

Having to log in every single time when I access GUI seems like a huge hassle. Or does it remember the login? I don't see a checkbox.

Chrome and other password managers will remember credentials for you.   And nothing says it has to be a complex password

    Thanks for the clarification.

I don't know if this is the right place to ask but can someone explain how that vulnerability is possible. If my server is not connected to the internet how can someone gain access to it?

Someone on your LAN could gain access.

Personally, I'm with you: if no root password set, then why require one for SSH?  But a lot of the work we do is to keep users from shooting themselves in the foot - this is one of those cases.

Sorry for necroing but I just noticed the same behaviour after finally upgrading to 6.9 :)

And this was the thread Google dragged out for me.

The solution for not setting a root password but having ssh available is to use an ssh key instead for authentication.

That is (as long as the key is stored safely and has a good passphrase) much more secure than passwords anyway afaik.

But I'll probably get around to setting a password any year now...  At least I'll promise to do it before the Epochalypse.
