• 6.9.2 RC2 "Read SMART" spins up the same 2 disks throughout the day

The same 2 disks (sdb is the parity disk) seem to get spun up to read SMART (?) throughout the day.

Time is AM, everyone was asleep during that time, no one accessed the NAS.
There are no VM's and no dockers in Unraid, I use it as a "simple" NAS.

I modified the smart polling in the settings to 5 days and it seems like unraid is simply ignoring the setting and doing checks anyway.  Anyone have any idea if something else could be causing unraid to do a SMART poll?

Unraid does the smart check if it detects the disk spinning up. so maybe another process accessing the disk.

Yeah, I noticed that it did a SMART read anyway even though I disabled it.  Any tips on how to troubleshoot this because I'm not seeing anything in the logs.  I've been disabling dockers and removing plugins to try to narrow it down but not having much luck.

Have you tried the file activity plugin to see if it shows files being opened on the pool?

I did try it, I saw a bunch of TV nfo files being accessed which tells me its Plex :/... I guess I'll try the folder caching plugin.  I could have sworn I looked at plex before, sigh.  Thanks for that!

attach diagnostics to your NEXT post in this thread

I actually think I tracked down my problem and it wasn’t an UnRaid issue.  After I posted, I started looking at every device on my network linked to my server.  After I re- enabled mover logging, I saw my router was writing information quite frequently.  I just updated my router with the latest Advanced Tomato firmware, I had previously configured a CIFS IP data usage to write to my backups share on the server.  Low and behold the interval was 1 hour. Now that data usage tracking is working properly in Advanced Tomato, I don’t need to do it anyway.

it doesn’t explain why it spun up the entire array every hour (because backups is limited to one specific disk In the array) but now it’s only happening on a few drives and, in my best estimation, it’s functioning properly now. My tip to anyone else having similar issues is to double check every device that might read/write to a share on the server and be as detailed  as possible. I also just configured a separate share for time machine backups from the Mac on my network so I expect to see, in my case Disk 9, spun up quite a bit.

Just wanted to add to the thread after I went hunting for possible culprits.

An additional culprit was a mounted share in windows that was being accessed and causing the drive to spin up.

Another one is syncthing.  Syncthing was a bit hard to track down because it was deleting old versions and not showing up on the file activity plugin.  I moved the contents to the cache and it seems like it has address a giant part of the spin ups.

Finally, I added folder caching to try to prevent plex from spinning up the drive.  I'm not even sure that would have been the case because I think syncthing was a bit part.

Keeping my fingers crossed but I think it was user error on my part.🤦‍♂️
