  • [6.9.0 and 6.9.1] Disks don't spin down after upgrade from 6.8.3

    • Solved Annoyance

Since I have upgraded from 6.8.3 there is weird bug.

After some time disks are shown to be in stand by (gray status).

But problem is that I can clearly hear that some disks are still spinning.

I haven't had this issue with previous version of Unraid.

When this happens, I have found workaround to spin them down manually:

    1. first I need to spin them up (I guess to GUI gets update that they are actually spining)
    2. then I can click on spin down and all of them will spin down

If I skip first step, nothing will happen.

So issue arises only when they "spin down" after idling for some time.

    Same issue with 6.9.1

Have you create a diagnostic dump recently as there is a issue of this spinning up but icons stay grey. Can be any smartctl that is not checking for standby and doing reads will spin up. But unraid may not know.

This is probably what's happening, but it occurs to me we can detect that.  I'll look into this for next patch release.

There is a bug report for the diags and I have seen a pull request from Squid.

Can you add your system details to it?

Its not the same issue. I couldn't spin down drives at all (without workaround), you can but they spin up immediately. It looks like to me that something is keeping them awake.

I think its part of this bug. As Unraid spins up as soon as drive spins down.

    But doesn't affect all drives

Yup having the same issue. As soon as I do a manual spin down all drives spin back up minutes later.  Looking at the log file it shows SMART test spin up the drives. Which is weird because Im not using any apps like Sys temp or telegraf. Decided to go back to 6.8 and everything works fine.

6.9.1 is ok for spin downs.
