• [6.9.2] & [6.10.0-rc5] Dell H730 Avago SAS based MegaRAID driver - Spin Up Performance Broken

    Hello,

    Received a Dell R530 with onboard H730

Tested both BIOS and UEFI boot, Tested on Newest RC and Stable
Card is set HBA, boot shows 8 Non-Raid Disk.. I can see Smart Etc..
Tested all Drives with Disk Speed  = All drive performance is within a few MB/s at most

Drives set to spin down - 15 Minutes
    XFS

    Now the issue... Parity Check...
If drives are spun down - I start parity check...
Drives will spin up, and parity check will begin... It maxes out at 60MB/s Per Drive
    Not normal performance..
If I cancel... and start it again same speed... even with drives spun up..
    If I spin down drives...

Then Spin UP - Star Parity Check
I get Full performance 200MB/s etc....

I can repeat this endlessly, on both rc and stable.

I was thinking of trying to set the raid card to spindown cards after 30mins of inactivity, but not sure if unraid will force them back up??

Disregard Disk Invalid in Diagnostics.. my parity hasn't synced

    Elapsed time:1 hour, 36 minutes

    Current position:1.09 TB (18.1 %)

    Estimated speed:171.2 MB/sec

    Estimated finish:7 hours, 58 minutes

    Sync errors corrected: 0

I don't have a HBA330 but I'm running unRAID on a H330 in HBA mode for the last 5 years and have never had this issue.

no special settings or mods just a fairly plan 6.9.2 no-matter how i start the parity check I get around 200MB/s per disk (as long as there is no other IO)

How did I not see this!
Do your drives spin down? or are they always up?

All drives are connected via a 26 port SAS expander backplane (8 ports to H330 and 18 for disks)

the system fully supports SAS but I only use SATA drives and have never had any issue with spindown (one of the main reasons I use unRAID

without aggressive spin-down the average power usage is at least 50% higher

I still run 6.9.2 (server is remote and until I have the iKVM connected again I don't dare to do remote upgrades :)

P.S. the HW is a Dell Poweredge T630 so that should be extremely similar to your R530. All the firmware is u2date but I have been running this system for about 5 years and never had any of the issues you describe

BTW, the HBA330 and H330 are from a HW perspective basically the same card, the HBA330 is a better card for Unraid when you use SAS drives because it has a much higher queue depth for SATA drives it does not really matter.

    Hey thanks for responding...
Belive it or not.. after trying everything....
I removed all the dell drives and tested with some new wd red pros....

Everything is working fine... I put one dell drive back in.. same issue :D

Something with the Firmware on those Dell Drives???
