Hello Unraid Community,
I am using two NVMe drives in my Unraid system, and I’ve tried both XFS and Btrfs file systems to set them up for use in the array. However, I keep encountering the same "Unmountable: Wrong File System" error regardless of the file system. Below is a detailed explanation of the issue and the steps I’ve taken so far.
System Details:
Unraid Version: [7.0.0]
Drives:
nvme0n1p1: Samsung SSD 980 500GB
nvme1n1p1: Samsung SSD 980 500GB
Tested File Systems:
XFS
Btrfs
Issue:
I initially tried formatting the drives with XFS:
- The mkfs.xfs command successfully formatted the drives.
- However, in the Unraid web GUI, the drives show up as "Unmountable: Wrong File System."
I then tried formatting the drives with Btrfs:
- The mkfs.btrfs command successfully formatted the drives.
- I can manually mount the drives without any issues.
- However, the drives still show up as "Unmountable: Wrong File System" in the Unraid web GUI.
The UUIDs and file system details for both drives are correctly detected, but Unraid does not allow me to use them in the array.
Steps Taken:
- I wiped the partitions completely (sgdisk --zap-all and wipefs -a) and reformatted the drives.
- I tried using Unraid’s "Format Disk" option, but the error persisted.
- I rebooted the Unraid system and tried setting up the array from scratch.
- I generated a diagnostics report and reviewed the logs for more information.

Questions:
How can I make Unraid recognize and use these drives in the array?
Should I completely wipe and leave the drives unformatted for Unraid to handle the formatting? If so, what is the correct process for this?
Has anyone experienced a similar issue, and if so, what was the resolution?
