[7.1.1] Windows 11 VM Crashing with Nvidia GPU Passthru

  • Solved
  • Minor

ISSUE RESOLVED: Posting this for anyone else having similar issues...

TL;DR - Try changing VM Sound Card setting to "None"

So I upgraded to 7.1.1 last night and started having issues with a WIN11 VM locking up when starting games.

I'm passing thru a 5090 which has been working fine on version 7.0.1 for the last month or so.

I thought it might have something to do with undervolt settings so I reset the voltage curve and memory clock to stock settings, rebooted the VM and it was still crashing within minutes of opening various games.

Next I wiped out and re-installed the latest gpu drivers with DDU (576.28), didn't fix it...

Thought it may have been RAM related (2x32GB XMP DDR5-6000) so rebooted and ran a couple passes of memtest with no issues.

Wasn't sure what else it could be so I tried changing the VM sound card from "Nvidia Device" to "None"... BOOM, no more crashes!!!

VM has been running solid for the passed few hours and oddly enough the sound is still working fine.
