eth0 stops responding after upgrade from 6.12.13 to 6.12.14 - Realtek driver errors

  • Solved
  • Minor

Last week I upgraded from 6.12.13 to 6.12.14 and immediately began seeing instability issues.  I run headless and at first start-up, the system was accessible and seemed ok.  After a while, the system seemed to lose connections and eventually became unreachable for even a ping.   I physically rebooted it a couple of times and each time it lost connection faster.   I moved the PC to set it up with a monitor and found that after starting up, it lost eth0 altogether but the system was otherwise running fine.

After checking several forums, I found it may be related to the Realtek r8169 driver and/or plugins.  I had both r8169 and r8168 plugins installed.  The actual ethernet controller is a Realtek RTL8111/8168/8211/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller (Rev 15) but OS installed r8169 driver originally and I had added the plugins.   After the upgrade, I found the driver & plugin for r8168 still active.  The plugin for r8169 was no longer installed. However, the driver still showed up as "deactivated" and a blacklist in modeprobe.d.   Following recommendations from some forums, I tried to disable the blacklist to get the ethernet interface back up and running.  I was able to do so briefly by deleting it from the driver GUI, but the blacklist kept re-appearing.  I also removed the modeprobe.d conf file from /boot/config/modprobe.d/r8169.conf.  Again, it kept reappearing.

Ultimately I downgraded and afterwards, everything appears to be working under 6.12.13

The following plugins are showing in error, and based on other forum feedback, I won't be reinstalling them

  • /boot/config/plugins-error/corefreq.plg
  • /boot/config/plugins-error/unraid-r8125.plg
  • /boot/config/plugins-error/unraid-r8152.plg
  • /boot/config/plugins-error/unraid-r8168.plg

Also, the plugin for r8169 is gone, but the driver for r8169 is reactivated and no longer blacklisted.

Otherwise, everything appears to be working normally. I'm providing a diagnostic log taken before the downgrade. I also ran the update assistant (which I wish I had run beforehand!), and it did not find any errors. I'm going to leave my system on 6.12.13 this week and make sure it's running stable before trying any further upgrade attempts. I appreciate any further recommendations you might have.
