I'm in the process of upgrading some drives in my array, replacing the remaining 8TB drives with the the cold spare 16TB on hand and moving the 16TB Parity drive to data.  I was looking to buy the same model WD/HGST drives, and ended up buying two 18TB drives.  Unfortunately, the only model in stock were the Pin 3/Power Disable model.  Not a big issue, as I have some Kapton tape in hand and know how to deal with this issue.

I opened up the box to put the new Parity drive in the server.  To my surprise, not only had the seller included cards explaining the issue of Power Disable drives and legacy hardware, the card includes a small strip of Kapton tape.  And they also included a SATA to SATA power adapter for each drive.  Totally unexpected by me.

So a shout out to ServerPartDeals.com - I have bought a number of reconditioned drives from them.  I have had no issues with any of them, the pricing was very competitive, shipping has been very fast, well packaged and free.  Being forward thinking (I'm sure it saves them some grief) with addressing this power disable feature and not telling customers "Too bad, not our problem..." is just the icing on the cake that compelled me to post this.

I just bought a used (off-lease) HP P4500 from a server refurbish place (http://www.deltaserverstore.com/contact-us.html) (they're in Toronto).  Reasonable prices (I'm a customer and have no affiliation with them, this is just a recommendation).  I'm REALLY happy with my new machine (note it's only been up now for 12 hours ATTOW).

(Remember to ask for a controller (Host Bus Adapter) that's in IT mode, not the usual RAID one)

Including taxes and shipping, approx $740 CDN.  Would have picked it up if I was closer (I'm in Ottawa).  I've now got ...

• 12 cores (24 threads)
• 64 GB ram (ddr3)
• 12 - 3.5 inch bays for SAS or SATA disks
• VT-d supported Xeon CPUs (I'm planning on migrating my dedicated Plex server into it, so I can't say yet "for sure" it works or not)
• And I just added  a 500 GB NVME disk for VMs in an 16x slot.  I've got two 8x slots left on a riser (1 for the controller and the other for an nVidia video card) for passthrough.
• This one is LOUD though.  Gotta build a shroud to mask the noise.  WAY louder than the IBM M1 (below).  

My old machine was (still is for a bit) ...

• an IBM x3650 M1 with an LSI 9201-8i in IT mode
• 6x 4 TB 3.5 inch disks (the remaining two disks are in an external chassis connected via SAS to SATA cables
• 32 GB ddr2 ram
• 8 CPUs (not hyperthread)
• This machine works OK, dockers are pretty responsive and Unix VMs too, but windows VM are a bit luggy (yes, that's a word).
• Oh, and I did have to fiddle to find a USB key that would been seen at boot time.  But it does work.
• Oh yea, and on this older hardware, the boot time is like 5 minutes (it gets stuck at BZROOT (or something like that).  The new machine boots very normally.

What I really want for Christmas is the Cisco server with 44 cores (88 threads).  Pricier though.  They have a bunch of servers for 2.5 disks (if you got a bunch sitting around).  But that won't really help most of us with out collections of old SATA 3.5s.

I like the PCIe 2.0 version, the LSI SAS9201-8i,, and it works just as well for most people. They are closer to $50 on eBay. I have the -16i and -16e versions of this card and can attest they are excellent and work well with unRAID.

I've been buying 8TB WD externals for a while, but I am at a point now where I need to move to larger disks array-wide.  I see MFGs are up to 18TB disks now.  Holy moly.  I think going from 8TB disks to 10TB or 12TB might not make a whole lot of sense.... But the 18TB disks are very, very expensive.

What's the sweet spot for teen TB disks these days?

Consider this all to common scenario. You want to replace a drive (maybe it is failing, or maybe just want to upsize it). You open the case and swap out the old and swap in the new. In the process, you can't help but touch a few cables with the back of your hand. No harm done. You put the server back together. Boot up. Everything looks good. You start the drive rebuild. 2 hours later you check on progress. The array is offline. A different disk in your array is showing a red + (it has dropped offline). Looking in the logs you see that it was getting link resets and ultimately the drive dropped offline. One of those cables you thought you harmlessly touched - it wasn't harmless. Even the slightest skewing of a cable can create an intermittent connection. You now have a more complicated recovery to do, and if you make a mistake, could easily lose data.

Hot-swap cages are not the cure - they are the vaccine. Once you have them and they are burned in, this should never happen to you.
