  1. SSD support in Linux and associated file systems has been in place quite a while and is quite mature at this point. However don't be so quick to discount advances in spinners - that industry is not going away quietly and probably will be several years before we see the last of them. With 6.9 we have introduced "multiple pools". At present this only supports btrfs pools but much of the underlying work has been done to support other types of pools (that is, formatted with a file system other than btrfs). Along with this, it gives us a path to generalize pools further and let you define multiple "unRAID" pools. This work will require changes in the unRAID kernel driver, and is naturally the time to address SSD devices in the unRAID array, as well as a few other improvements. How this work is phased into future releases is T.B.D.

  2. There are additional things that our creator does that a simple IMG file does not. Our tool validates the USB flash GUID as usable (most of the time ;-), it allows the user to toggle EFI boot mode, as well as customize hostname and networking options. It even lets the user select which release to install (from a backup, the current available release, or from our Next branch). These are features that are important to ease of use for new users and while we can appreciate that not everyone needs this, those that do really appreciate it. It is out of scope for the purpose of this RFQ, but know that we are investigating other licensing methods for future inclusion. Changing licensing is always a real iceberg of a problem. Seems small and simple from above the water line, but below it is a gigantic thing just waiting to sink your ship ;-). That is going to have to be another battle for another day. While we definitely appreciate what certain users want, we have to address the wider market of users that aren't as savvy. While I definitely agree if you're savvy enough to build a computer, you're probably savvy enough to figure out how to image a USB flash using some generic tool, but we're not just targeting that kind of customer and perhaps longer term users won't be building their own servers at all. The point is, our flash creator tool should work fine, but it's been a bit more of a bear to maintain than we'd like, so we're looking for offers from developers that want to earn a little extra cash to help build this thing. And yeah, we probably will have to fix it again after the next Mac release comes out, but that's fine and something we're also willing to accept.

  5. The build times are completely variable since some tasks are core count dependent and some tasks favour clock speed so a real comparison is not really possible... Also I don't want to compare the virtual size of things based on this container... The mentioned 30 minutes are really for slow machines with let's say a Core2Duo or something similary...

  6. Appreciated. If you got any suggestions for improvements please feel free to ask, but I think the container has enough features for now... Please if you ever rebuilding the Kernel/Images again, delete the container and redownload it from the CA App to be always on the latest version and up to date

  8. Yes, you can. One of the unRAID boot options is unRAID OS GUI mode. This boots into a GUI on a monitor directly attached to the server. If you click on the the flash drive on the Main page, you can select the default boot option by clicking the radio button on the desired option. You can also select during boot (if you have an attached monitor and keyboard or IPMI) an option other than the default.

  9. I can't help with app issues. You have to ask jellyfin about that. If it's working, no need to ping jellyfin. Pinging from inside the letsencrypt container is simply: ping jellyfin It uses the container name to communicate, as that stays the same. The IP changes inside the docker network on reboots and updates to containers.

  10. Its under update driver, then "browse my computer for drivers", then "let me pick from a list of available drivers for my computer" then show system devices, then the acpi driver is on the list on the right hand side

  12. Yes, the HBA setting is just set once. I don't remember the exact settings off hand but it was pretty straight forward, basically you just disable all raid functions of the card and it has a setting to turn it into an HBA setup. The online documentation explains it pretty well. SSD trim is outside the scope of a fourm post, but basically it clears old data from an SSD nand memory so that future writes will be faster. Modern drives have garbage collection that makes it far less important then it used to be but it can still help write performance to trim the drive from time to time. In the last month I have been using the system though I have not seen any performance degeneration.

  13. Most likely just garden-variety filesystem corruption, if it happens again soon re-format the flash drive, and if it still happens after that then replace.

  15. One thing to try before doing it a quick (~1 second) push of the power switch. If Unraid is responsive at any level, that should start a clean shutdown. If that does not work, whatever your next action is will result an unclean shutdown.

  19. I ended up getting a Adaptec ASR-71605 16-Port 6Gbs SAS PCIe 3.0 card for $30 I have to say, I am very happy with it. No need to flash it to put it into HBA mode, you simply change the setting in the cards bios at boot. Performance has been great as well and it has 16 ports for less money then the LSI 8 port cards. It also works great in unraid, drivers installed automatically and have given me no issues. Only downside is that like the LSI cards it can't trim consumer SSD's but thus far I have not noticed this to be an issue and I can connect the SSD's to the onboard sata to trim them every now and then if needed. Also, need to make sure that you set the write cache setting properly from the start: https://community.wd.com/t/unable-to-activate-write-caching-on-several-drives/17723/3

  20. It's pretty pretty awesome considering. I would say maybe adding a time stamp or elapsed time on build in the log would be good to benchmark and identify anything odd. You mentioned some expected build times in your post, so I thought that would be good. But really if you read the log it's sufficient to see what happened. So again. not really it's pretty awesome. Already deleted!

  22. CRC errors are connection issues and are normally recovered automatically. You need to note that the count never gets reset to zero so you only want to get worried if it keeps increasing. You probably want to click on the orange icon against the drive on the Dashboard and hit the acknowledge option so that you only get further notifications for CRC errors on that drive if it changes. If the CRC count does keep increasing you want to carefully check the power/SATA cables to the drive as cabling issues is the commonest cause of CRC errors.

  23. Its working now. the fix was: 1 - do not use another steam account to download the server. use public. 2 - do not edit the IP details in the server config 3 - remove TCP entrties from the docker settings 4 - be patient

  26. The motherboard, CPU, RAM, drives, you can expect Unraid to know what to do with these. The GPU, it will use as a simple video output since it doesn't require any more than that. And you can run "headless" where Unraid is managed from other computers on the network through its webUI. That would allow the GPU to be used by dockers or VMs. yes, but no, parity doesn't contain any of your data. Parity is a very common concept in computers and communications. It is simply an extra bit that allows a missing bit to be calculated from all the other bits. If you lose a drive, parity allows it to be reconstructed from the data on all the other drives. Parity by itself can't do anything. Don't know if you started with the Unraid Basics playlist at that YouTube link or not. That is probably a good place to start: There is also the wiki Overview: https://wiki.unraid.net/UnRAID_6/Overview

  27. That statement is true, but the nuance is that Plex does not require access to the GPU. So if you configure Plex to use the GPU, then if the VM is running, Plex won't run. However, most people if they only have one GPU wouldn't put themselves in that corner, and just let the server CPU handle Plex, in which case they will both run quite happily at the same time.

  33. Totally disagree. It is all about user experience and having a tool available, which makes it extremely easy to set up Unraid the first time is very beneficial. This is also acknowledged by reviewers, who praise the easiness of Unraid installations.

  36. Where did you fill in -beta latest_experimental at the ? You have to fill it in at: . I don't think they've changed anything that breaks the container, if so it has to be a big change on Steam's end if it doesn't download the game properly... The GAME_PARAMS and the GAME_ID are two completely different commands. With the GAME_ID you choose which game to download through SteamCMD and also you can add for example your option -beta latest_experimental (in your case this should be: '294420 -beta latest_experimental' wihtout quotes). The GAME_PARAMS are startup commands for the game itself. It's a bit difficult for me to troubleshoot this game since I'm not personally owning it, but I hope this helps. I will look into that when I got home from work but the errors that you see are mostly from WINE (since there is no native linux dedicated server, correct me if the dev's already released one). Have you forwarded all ports with the corresponding protocoll? Nice, I strongly recommend you to install the plugin 'CA Appdata Backup/Restore v2' and make daily backups (you don't have to stop the container when a backup is running - there is an option on the bottom of the plugin where you can enable that it don't stops). In my case I've set it up to make a daily backup at night and to keep a copy of every day for 7 days long and then it automatically deletes it.

  40. Thanks Just a small update. Tagging @AdrianF as well. Managed to grab a 11 month old (almost like new) Phantek Enthoo Pro for 40C$ (delivered at home). So I am now going full ATX. I hope it is a decent case for my needs (also upgrades). As I am not in a rush, I am just searching for deals for other components and grab them one at a time.

  43. Is it possible to get the hardware profile uploaded by users? I would like to collate the information into a publicly accessible Grafana or similar dashboard to give Unraid users a view of what hardware other people are running. This would end questions like "is this GPU compatible" or "this piece of kit I want to buy" and would just generally be cool information. We can also expand this information into swapping or deals channels for user at a later stage? Kind Regards, George

  46. can i be the first to say, wow!, i can see how this will be VERY useful for people wanting to pass through hardware to containers, and now being able to build out an image is impressive work indeed!, and of course takes the load of LSIO to produce the custom image every time unraid bumps the version, a real game changer!.

  48. A slightly better way to maintain the keys across reboots is to * copy the authorized_keys file to /boot/config/ssh/root.pubkeys * copy /etc/ssh/sshd_config to /boot/config/ssh * modify /boot/config/sshd_config to set the following line AuthorizedKeysFile /etc/ssh/%u.pubkeys This will allow you to keep the keys on the flash always and let the ssh startup scripts do all the copying.
