  1. I am not here just for storage. VM - Docker - Community Driven Development - A real OS made by real people - Creative Solutions - Help for one off problems - people looking to solve new problems in new ways - constant evolution. I looked at other NAS systems, other OS, other boxed units and settled on Unraid after a few weeks of research. I'm VERY happy I did. I'm glad to be here. I don't want to see it turn into anything else, except, a further evolving product. I paid for a PRO license, and, I am very appreciative to have this software available to me. I was a user of the Nvidia option so that I could run folding with my geforce card. I don't transcode, but, I want the option to keep using my nividia products. Personally, I'm glad it is being folded into the main build. Well done community & @limetech and - thank you to everyone who has been nice to me in the forum.

  2. Yes there is a big update for macinabox. I should have the new version up tomorrow along with a video on how to use. I deceided to make more changes again to the container before releasing it hense the delay. Major changes are. Switched to Opencore. Supports Big Sur, Catalina, Mojave and High Sierra. Xml for template generated on the fly setting any custom locations you use for vm images or iso images. Installing vm no longer requires having to stop array/vm service before seeing the vm in vm tab. Being able to edit the vm in Unraid vm manager. Add cores, ram gpu usb controller ect without having to edit xml after. Auto fixes for unusual core counts in mac vms. Auto fixing network type for both install and post install Able to use both custom and stock unraid ovmf files When you use the new version the existing template is not compatable with the new Macinabox. So please make sure to delete the container, the template and the appdata. New template looks like this. If yours doesnt look like this its not the correct one.

  4. Upgrading to 6.X there's a mention in the release notes for CPU scaling configuration for Haswell and Ivy Bridge processors. http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php/Upgrading_to_UnRAID_v6 More Tips CPU speed and power saving workaround The newer Linux kernels have automatic CPU frequency step down when more CPU speed is not needed, saving power and heat. But, if your CPU is an Intel Haswell or possibly an Ivy Bridge, including most Xeon's, then there is a frequency scaling issue with the intel_pstate driver, and it needs to be disabled. It's nothing serious, just means the CPU won't power down to lower frequencies when idle, so you may pay a little more in power costs. It will not hurt you in any other way. To regain the CPU frequency stepping down, there are several things you can do. You can install the Tips and Tweaks plugin and change the CPU Scaling Governor. You can edit syslinux/syslinux.cfg on the flash drive, and insert intel_pstate=disable in the append lines. Easy way to edit syslinux.cfg - browse to your unRAID Main screen, click on your Flash drive, and drop down to the Syslinux Configuration section! Make sure you click on the Apply button. You will want to change these: append initrd=/bzroot append initrd=/bzroot unraidsafemode To these: append intel_pstate=disable initrd=/bzroot append intel_pstate=disable initrd=/bzroot unraidsafemode You can monitor the current CPU frequency for each core on the Dashboard. What's not stated in the first bullet is what selection to change the CPU Scaling Governor to? Choices are: OnDemand, PowerSave, Conservative, Performance, Scheduled. Which would be the correct selection for the intent?

  6. So, I've created a couple of custom themes for the login page that I think people might enjoy. The themes and installation instructions can be found here: https://docs.theme-park.dev/themes/addons/unraid/login-page/retro-terminal/ The themes are all highly customizable, so If you got some cool ideas I'd love to see them! @jonp The wait is over A couple of screenshots

  8. Order of disks or SATA ports is of no concern. unRAID tracks disks by serial number. As long as you have the same disks and nothing has happened to change reporting of serial numbers (like plugging into some backplanes), the array will come up as currently configured without issue regardless of the MB SATA ports to which the disks are connected.

  9. Nope, unless you have VMs with hardware pass through from the old motherboard. In that case, you may need to change some VM configurations. unRAID licensing is not tied to any hardware configuration (other than the GUID of the flash drive), so you can change hardware and the system should boot just fine with the current configuration. I have personally changed my motherboard/CPU/RAM at least four times with the same flash drive and similar unRAID configuration.

  12. Thanks for your detailed feedback @sota. Just to be clear, no current users will be affected by any future subscription offerings. We are also committed to any future subscription offerings being tied only to added premium features not already included with the OS. We fully understand the hesitancy and resistance to some subscription models and will be sure to make it worth while and a big value add for those users interested in the added features. Thank you again!

  14. It is super confusing, took me an hour to figure this out. Partly because the download/install of easy-rsa isn't working. To by pass that step,.. do the following; - Downloaded the easy-rsa v.3.0.5. - Unzip it and placed in the /mnt/user/appdata/openvpn-server/ directory. (or wherever your openvpn directory is) - name the downloaded folder easy-rsa (i.e. /mnt/user/appdata/openvpn-server/easy-rsa) - Don't press Install RSA Key buttom,.. the above step essentially installed the RSA. pressing again will delete the existing folder and download a index.html page broken link... (don't ask how many times I pressed that button... :() - ssh in and run chmod +x /mnt/user/appdata/openvpn-server/easy-rsa/easyrsa to make it executable. - Press Generate the server certificates and keys. wait for a while.. eventually you will see green text on screen when it generates certs. hope this helps

  16. As long as drives are completely zeroed they will not affect either parity drive. Size is not a factor as Unraid assumes that any space beyond the physical size an array drive can be treated as if it were zero filled.

  19. Effectively step 3 is writing the full capacity of parity, so I don't see any benefit over just doing a new config and swapping the 4 drives just as they are, without emptying or formatting or zeroing the 4 old drives, each of which is writing to parity. Here are the steps I would use. Copy the content of the 4x4TB to other array drives, moving is just a copy and a delete, where the delete writes to parity as well, so copy instead of move. Shut down the array, physically swap the 4 drives. Power up, do a new config keeping all, go to main page and put the 4 new drives into the "missing" slots. Start the array and build parity. If you want to stress the 4x8TB with preclear, go right ahead, I personally do, but it's not necessary, as building parity will read the entire surface, and a subsequent extended smart test should uncover any issues. I like to preclear because it's easier to deal with a bad drive before it's in the array. Your method will work, the methodology is sound, but it will take FOREVER compared to what I outlined, and realistically your method will result in probably double or triple the total writes to the parity drives compared to just building parity with the new drives. Honestly I can see your method taking a week or more of array time, and it's filled with potential data loss landmines if you fat finger or misunderstand a command. Leaving the data on the old drives and copying to other drives in the array means you have a backup of that data, at least until you repurpose the old drives.

  20. Update: upgraded to BIOS 2802 in prep for the new Zen 3 CPU. Temp monitors seem to be working as before, and I haven't changed anything otherwise.

  21. That sounds like a good plan. I'll run a extended SMART test on my old drives and only pre clear the new drives. **Unless anyone else advises against it.** I think I'll hold off on using my SAS2LP-MV8 and avoid any unnecessary issues during the initial setup. The MB I'm using has 8 SATA ports. So I should be able to get away with just using eight drives to start. If I find I'm needing more space, I'll consider trying my SAS2LP-MV8 once 6.9 is out of Beta. Thanks for your help!

  22. I think you can set "mirror syslog to flash" to "yes" in order to keep logs on the flash drive across restarts. However, because of the write operations done to the flash drive, I believe it is recommended to use this feature only temporary for troubleshooting purposes. Best. OP

  25. Set up your new USB stick just like you did your existing stick to begin with, but don't bother doing any customizations. Purchase the key on the new stick using the registration tool, make a backup on the flash page, shut down, copy the config folder from your current running key to the new key, delete the trial key from the config folder and extract the new registered key from the backup you made before you shut down and copy it to the new stick. Boot back up and and you should be golden. If you are fuzzy on anything I said, please ask for clarification.

  26. There is nothing wrong with asking questions! What I meant by that is that you need to mount the folders you want backed up under /data in the Docker container, eg. host path /mnt/user/Documents needs to map into the container under /data/Documents in order for it to be backed up. You can add multiple of those for everything you want backed up.

  27. Late to the party. I love unraid I have been using it for years, I have even recommend it to a family member and a friend who have gotten licenses. I have even contributed in my own little way. I have read your analogy twice and all I am getting from it is you think @CHBMB is acting like a Spoiled brat and they should only expect thanks from the community. Even know they and other like them stepped up to help the community (parented) when the community were being ignored from the Unraid team (parents). Now that the unraid team has decided to parent again the uncle should expect no thanks and if other community members don't like it they can leave? Of course their feelings are hurt they have put in so much time helping people just for the sake of helping the community. Just like you said why should they help the kids if the parents aren't grateful and are scared their help will damage the kids?. Remember they aren't getting paid like the unraid team. They don't have to help and share their toys. With that being said maybe unraid will put more of an effort in when it comes to the community devs they are after all what make unraid what it is imo.

  28. My apologies for not responding faster, apparently I got unsubbed from the thread so I wasn't getting notifications. The developer has been releasing a flurry of new updates that have broken the bot on unraid at the moment. I am waiting for him to finish his slate of major updates before I work with him on fixing everything for unRAID. I will update this thread when that work is ready to commence.

  29. So there is actually a credits page in the Unraid webGui, but right now we only list the people who've directly contributed to code that lives inside the OS itself, not plugins, containers, or other 3rd party modifications. But having a place on either the website or another spot that can showcase our community and the developers that participate here isn't a bad idea!

  31. I started understanding how to put this all together and wanted to throw some info out there for those that need it. First of all, I would recommend that if you are going to use the Vanilla version of MC (what binhex has provided) make sure the docker not running browse out to your appdata\binhex-minecraftserver\minecraft folder edit the server.properties file with notepad++ (I'm using Windows for all of this) Change the following settings if you like: difficulty=[easy|hard] gamemode=[creative|adventure|survival] force-gamemode=[true|false] level-name=world <=== This is the folder name all your game data is saved into motd=Logon Message <=== Message displayed when you log into the server from a MC client Now, if you are like me, you want to use Forge or Bukkit. In this case create a folder on your C:\ drive called "Minecraft" download the minecraft server file from HERE, and place it into C:\Minecraft (believe it's called 'minecraft_server.1.14.4.jar') double-click the file, and wait for a minute as it downloads some MC server files. When it stops, edit the EULA.txt file, and change the line inside from false to true eula=true Double-click on the minecraft_server.1.14.4.jar file again and wait for it to finish type in "/stop". This will kill the minecraft server. Download forge for the version of MC server you just downloaded (You want the INSTALLER button in the recommended box on the site) Place this file (forge-1.14.4-28.1.0.jar) in C:\Minecraft Double click on this file. Select SERVER and change the path to C:\Minecraft Let it perform its magic Once finished, again, shut it down with "/stop" Now copy the contents of C:\Minecraft to appdata\binhex-minecraftserver\minecraft Delete the file appdata\binhex-minecraftserver\perms.txt (this will restore the default permissions to the files you copied over) In Unraid, edit the docker and create a new variable Click SAVE and then APPLY/DONE Fire up the docker This will use the forge jar file within the docker container, instead of the vanilla jar file. From this point, if you want to add resource packs or mods, you can download them and install into the "mods" or "resourcepacks" folder as necessary. These folders may need to be created. A good mod to verify that your server is working is FastLeafDecay-Mod-1.14.4.jar. You can find it HERE. Chop a tree down and it should dissolve a lot quicker than normal. I would also recommend adding one or two mods at a time and testing. Let me know if you'd like more details on the above.

  34. mc is the program named Midnight Commander https://midnight-commander.org/. This is a pseudo command-line GUI, somehow similar with Total Commander, Free Commander and so on from Windows. To start the mc from your browser: 1. Login first to the unRaid Web UI 2. Start a Terminal session 3. Type into the webterminal window opened as pop-up mc and hit Enter 4. Now you are in Midnight Commander With mc you have full access to the whole heart of the unRaid, hoever to avoid any damage (if you have no experience with Linux shell) my recommandation is to use ony the /mnt folder, where your unraid array and disks are mounted. ATTENTION: Please be aware that you may only copy data from disk to disk or share to share, never copy disk to share or share to disk, as this my lead to massive data corruption. Description: /mnt/cache - the cache disk(s), if you have /mnt/disk1 to /mnt/diskX- the physical disks from your array /mnt/disks - the unassigned disks to the array, if are mounted via Unassigned Devices plugin /mnt/user - the shares from all disks in array + cache disk(s) /mnt/user0 - the shares from all disks in array, without cache disk(s)

  35. You need help? We've got lots of helpful people! So take a deep breath, and try to relax. If you are worried about data loss, we can reassure you that it's very rare here. Many problems turn out to be simple issues, like a loose or bad cable or connector. NEW! Try the Fix Common Problems plugin! But first, some guidelines that will both help us help you and help you get the help you need sooner! Almost always, the most important thing you need to do is capture your complete syslog, BEFORE YOU REBOOT! We usually need to see what went wrong BEFORE the reboot, because once you reboot, it's lost! [For Unraid v6.0-rc4 or later] If networking is working, browse to the Unraid webGui, go to the Tools tab, click on the Diagnostics icon, then click on the Download button (Collect button if v6.0). After the diagnostic data collection is complete, it will save a diagnostics zip file to your computer, to the download location you specify or is configured in your browser. This zipped file is ready to attach to a forum post. It contains a copy of your syslog with DOS friendly line endings, copies of SMART reports for all drives present, copies of your system and share config files, and a technical file describing your array, including all of the content on the Main screen. Once you obtain this diagnostic dump file, you can skip the next paragraph because you already have the syslog, and you can skip capturing the SMART reports below, because you already have them too! If networking is not working (and you have Unraid v6.0-rc4 or later), then if you can login at the console command prompt, you can type diagnostics, and you will get the same diagnostics.zip file in the /boot/logs folder. You can then shut down with powerdown and take the flash drive to another computer. [For v6.0-betas through -rc3, OR if you only want the syslog] If networking is working, browse to the Unraid webGui, go to the Tools tab, click on the Syslog icon, then click on the Download button. (Prior to v6.0-beta15, it's at the bottom.) After clicking the Download button, it will save syslog.zip to your computer, which is a zipped file containing syslog.txt, which is a copy of your syslog with DOS friendly line endings. The zip file is ready to attach to a forum post. (Since syslogs are highly compressible, we appreciate them being attached as zip files!) If no network, then you will have to capture the syslog from your server console. Please see Capturing your syslog, and use the 'All Unraid versions' method. Move the flash drive containing the syslog to your workstation, where you can attach it to a support post. Is it a problem with a hard drive? Then we will probably need to see a SMART report for each drive giving errors. If you don't have the diagnostic dump file from above, please do so via Tools-> Diagnostics, and make sure each SMART report is available to be attached with the syslog. In some problem cases, a drive is not responsive, so you cannot request a SMART report until AFTER rebooting. Just remember to get that syslog before you reboot! Time to create a new support topic! A new one please, don't hijack someone else's topic. Browse to the unRAID forums, and go to the General Support board in the unRAID V6 section, or other board as appropriate, such as Docker, KVM, hardware build, etc. (Make sure you did not go to the General Support board in the v5 section!) Click on the New Topic button in the upper right. Enter a descriptive subject that summarizes the problem. Remember, we have seen a lot of problems, many very similar, so your subject should try to be a little different. First, tell us the exact version of Unraid, the plugins and addons you have loaded, and what hardware you are using. You can tell us about your hardware either here in the post, or in your signature. Now describe the problem, what exactly goes wrong, what errors you saw (exact words please!), what you were doing at the time, what steps you have taken to fix it, anything that helps us fully understand the problem. The sooner we understand what the real problem is, the sooner you get the right help. If you have it, attach your diagnostics zipped file. If not, attach your syslog and SMART reports (if any), preferably zipped. If it's too big, you MUST zip it. If it's useful, attach any screen captures or pictures you have made. You may wish to zip everything into one file, or if too big, into separate zip files. Preview it, then post it. If you've been asked to post a diagnostics file (or anything in addition), DO NOT add it to a previous post: Please create a new post with the requested information! Yes, we've asked for a lot of information, but it's to help you. Please don't make us beg! We're just volunteers, with limited time and lives of our own! Do you believe you have found a bug? Create a support thread in Bug Reports, and describe the problem according to the guidelines above, and tell us why you believe it is a bug in unRAID. Some additional guidelines - * Syslogs need to be complete if possible, not just excerpts. We often need to see where the errors start, and we may need to see how the drives and subsystems are set up. * Please don't process the syslog in any way. We do not want syslogs in a .rtf, .doc, or .pdf format. We want it intact in its original raw text form, just the way you captured it. * Make sure you have upgraded to the latest version, if possible. It's frustrating to spend time helping someone, only to discover it was a problem long fixed. * Please don't ever say "latest version", of anything! Always specify the exact version number of whatever software you are referring to. We can't know which versions you were aware of, and we don't know if you are referring to the latest official version, or the latest beta or RC. And in a month or 2, or worse a year from now, no one will know which version you were referring to. * Try starting in Safe Mode, without any plugins or other addons. Does the problem still occur? Then repeat testing with and without various plugins and addons. * Are you overclocking? Don't! Try restoring all CPU and memory timings and voltages to their stock settings, then see if the problem still occurs. * If you take a picture, make sure it's viewable, no glare. * If you try to capture part of the webGui screen, temporarily drag the browser borders in, to make a much smaller picture. * Is the problem repeatable? We need to know that, so please test, and if repeatable, report the steps that cause a repeat. * If the system crashes completely and there is no way to capture a final syslog, then start a tail on the unRAID console or Telnet session (tail -f /var/log/syslog). * Once the problem is solved, modify your original post, and insert [solved] at the beginning of the Subject line. Moderators: feel free to lock a solved topic. PLEASE do not privately ask the moderators or other users for personal support! Helpful moderators and users are just users like yourself, unpaid volunteers, and do not provide official support, so it is better to ask support questions on the forum instead. That way, you get the benefit of having answers from the whole community, instead of just one person who may or may not know, or may be wrong, or may be unavailable. Plus, you will probably get faster help. And, other users in the community can benefit by learning from your problem and its solution. Moderators: please feel free to edit this post.
