I'll give that a try and post the results. I'm not sure when this started, but it had to be fairly recently. (I'd have noticed at some point). Not the end of the world, but my drives have plenty of hours on them, would prefer to make them last a bit longer, and save a bit of power. (It's one of the main points of Unraid, right?) Just odd that I can't even manually spin any of them down. ... more soon.

I've noticed recently that all of my drives are *always* spun up. I can't seem to find a setting that prevents them from shutting down. Making matters worse, when I manually try and spin them down, they stay spun up. No obvious errors in the log. (So I literally cannot spin them down by any means). Any thoughts? Any more information or logs that I need to upload?

Seems better, but still really slow on folders with 1,000 to 5,000 files. I'll keep reading those links. Has anyone tried NFS mounts? (I've never gotten them to work). If so, is the performance better? UPDATE: THE vfs objects line was the magic sauce. (I had a typo in that, once that was in there, bam) I'm thrilled! THANK YOU.

Having several issues with UnRAID on MacOS (Monterey) 1. VERY slow access times, even to read large directories. I run a Windows VM on the same hardware, and it's not even a close contest. At times accessing files and directories from the Mac Finder is almost unusable. 2. Sometimes shares cannot be accessed at all. I create a directory, and then I try to copy a file to it, and it says no permissions. Or, I'll save some files from an App (such as Photos) to that same directory, but Finder won't open it. (Red dot). Meanwhile, using the same UI/PW under Windows VM works just fine. I typically connect to UnRAID over SMB. How do I start to fix this? (Am I the only one with these issues?)

I have two. One Unraid, One older 4 bay QNAP. I originally built the Unraid when my QNAP went down and I had to wait 6 weeks for the company to repair it with proprietary parts. Now the QNAP is a lite-backup server, but it does have some great internet facing tools. As such, I mapped some shares from the QNAP over to my Unraid box and I use the QNAP as a "gateway" to get to my Unraid files remotely.

Brilliant !! Huge time-saver. Once my current drive rebuilds, I'll do that next. The serial numbers ... is that the extended string on the drive list on the dashboard? I need to pull the drives to see what info is on the labels. Yeah, this is a position I won't find myself in again. #FAIL A huge thank you to you!

All, I have an UNRAID server that has been in operation for many years now. Sadly, way back then I didn't map the drives to which slot they were in. So, I'm at the point I'm trying to upgrade my drives. I need to update the parity drive first (capacity). So I know there are 3 HGST drives, one of which is the parity. So I unplugged one and it went into disconnected states (offline). Great, I know that's slot 1 and NOT the parity drive. SADLY: (and I know there are threads on this), there is no way to get that drive back online without a full rebuild. Ouch. So now I'll have to do this process until I find the parity drive? Surely there has to be a better way !?!? (Going forward I'll have these documented, but for now ...) Any thoughts?

I guess I'm still not seeing the value proposition here. Why use UnRAID for ZFS? There are other platforms that implement ZFS quite well. UnRAID was supposed to be what RAID is not. Just my 2 cents. I do realize this is a popular request.

Why not just not use the product without VMS? If you don't start a VM, it doesn't use any resources.

That's another good option. I've personally never tried power line adapters.

Agreed, but sometimes they are necessary. Especially when in areas that you simply can't run Ethernet. Just know what you are getting.

Just get a router in "repeater" mode. Plug your ethernet from your UNRAID server into the router. Now your server is wireless. ... and yes, it's slow as snot.

Just curious: Where are you finding a case to hold all of those drives? I can't seem to find a case that can hold more than about 11. That's my biggest hold-up with expansion. Not being able to mount more drives.

That certainly wouldn't be simple in the least, but it would be wicked cool. I typically use SMB shares to mount to other servers so I can have a single access point for now. (I have a smaller server as well that I use UNRAID to "pass thru" to it)

I am in agreement with you.

I have zero desire to use ZFS. I've looked at it. If I wanted it, I'd have gone with FreeNAS. I wouldn't mind if other storage options were to be added, but it sort of goes against what UnRAID is. (IMHO) Access logs would be helpful however. I also love the idea of Snapshots.
