  1. This is for all unraid users that run Plex. What is your setup and how do you run Plex? I currently have a Mac Mini that everything runs on but it gets slow with downloading, moving files, and streaming. My dream would be to have unraid with everything on it and use the Mac mini as a player, but I dont have the money right now. I am thinking of selling my Mini and running all those plugins on the Unraid Beast, and using Apple TV for playback. Do you think I would run into any problems? Anything else to share? Thanks!
  2. I will be tackling unraid this summer and was just wondering how it handles files and if I have to change download locations. Currently I have sickbeard on my Mac and tv shows spread between 3 different hard drives. Since new shows come on all the time the one hd fills up and I have to move it over to a different drive, make sure sickbeard knows that, then delete it from the original location. Now what I was wondering is do I have to continue to do this with unraid? Or is unraid like a jbod and I can just keep adding harddrives and that's it? Thanks!
  3. So is unraid like JBOD? I'm wondering if it will show up as like 20TB drive instead of each drive. When I use sick beard, wil I have to constantly watch the harddrives and reorder shows as need be?
  4. I'm sorry for asking but since I don't know much about hardware, how do I know whats compatible and incompatible? Also if you have a good idea of what I'm going for cold you recommend some stuff to me? I know I want a quad-core processor, and I was told that intel chips can out perform the cheaper AMD chips (so for instance I was told that an intel quad-core chip could beat an AMD 8-core chip, not sure if this is true or not).
  5. How about these now. Budget for me: http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=16787531 Power for me: http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=16787551 I took most of this stuff from Raj's recommendations. Why does the power server have a more expensive motherboard? What will that do?
  6. What should I be looking for in a board? Are there any specific features besides sata slots? I know there are recommended builds, but a lot of the mobs are being sold anymore
  7. Alright so I have a rough guess of what I want in a server. Here are my needs: I will be running Plex Server with a rough guess of about a max of 3 HD 720p transcoding streams at once. I will also be using newsgroups with sick beard and couch potato. Want to run a torrent program with webui I want to be running with gigabit ethernet I don't know much about the hardware of computers and I have never built before, so I will probably look for help when I decide to order. I am posting this now to get a rough idea of moneys needed, but I won't be building until after my dental admissions test which is June 4th. This will be a celebration for after that damn test. My initial build I'm thinking is this http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=20116266 it ends up around $800. The processor is very fast, but it will be my brothers since he wants ivy bridge when it comes out. He got his discounted, and he will probably lower the price for me as well. When ivy comes out it may drop in price, so I'm expecting to pay around $170 for it. I currently have 7 random hard drives that are in external enclosures. I am planning on thanking them out and placing them in the case. For now that will be how I am holding the drives, since my case says up to nine 3.5 hard drives. In the future I would like to place drive trays http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817121405 four of them, but thats in the future as I need. I'm trying to model this setup http://www.greenleaf-technology.com/products/20drivetower/index.html So what do you guys think of the hardware. I know I am missing cable and probably other stuff, so if you could give me a rough estimate on what those would cost that would be great! So far with my current setup http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=20116266 its ($800) + ($120 for unRaid Pro) + (whatever cables cost) = (Im guessing around $1000) In the future I want (current $1000) + (4 x http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817121405 being $400) + (another sata card $100) = $1500 Again thanks unRaid community for the great reads so far. I'm eagerly awaiting this summer to get onto building! *Pic of what I eventually want Edit1: How about these now. Budget for me: http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=16787531 Power for me: http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=16787551
  8. Hi all, I have been reading for the past few week about unRaid. It sounds amazing and something that I really want to do. Let me tell you a little about my current setup. I have the latest Mac mini with 4GB of ram, which is Plex, Plex Media Server, Transmission, uTorrent, SABnzbd, Couchpotato, sick beard, trakt scobbler, logmein, iTunes, and google music. The way my media is stored is on all external hard rives which is now at 16TB. I use a usb hub for all of them connected to a single usb slot on my mac. My plex seems to be going extremely slow, and I am wondering if it is due to the usb hub and all the externals. Now my main question. If you could do it again what would you do in my situation? I'm thinking about a 12-15 bay build. I want cheap so I was thinking just get the bare essentials and run all the programs on the Mac Mini and storage on the unRaid. But now I m wondering if I should run the programs that can, on the unRaid and the use the Mini as a player? What would you guys do? I look at Rajs recommended builds but they seem out of date. Is there a better way of seeing what the most up to date hardware would cost? Any recommendations would be great from you guys. I am a noob at linux and servers but eager to get my storage up and running. I have had enough with the damn usb hub haha. Thanks!
