  1. jonathanm is correct. The anniversary update messed things up so much I ended up having to just do a clean install. The only way to get the update to work is to unassign all the cores and then assign only core zero. The update would also not work while passing through anything so I had to do it using VNC. Once the update is done you then go back an restore your settings. For other updates some work but a decent number fail. The VM then seems to try to update again and it usually works on the second try -- either that or it just gives up and restores the previous version. There is also the USB issue -- before I figured this out I waited hours with the VM making no progress. Unplugging all USB devices leads to the update proceeding. If you don't remove all USB devices including keyboard the update will just stall and not continue. Not a big deal but none of my physical Windows 10 computers have this issue.
  2. When I upgraded I'm fairly sure all the device numbers changed so I had to redo some of my pass-through stuff.
  3. My GF uses a VM for he main computer and it works ok but I don't know if I'd do it again. The Windows 10 updates are annoying.
  4. I don't think that is the case. I maintain two unRAID systems on two different networks, I'll call them "home" and "remote". The home server is running unRAID 6.3.0 rc1 and the remote one is on unRAID 6.2.1. There is a router-based (Asus Merlin OpenVPN) site-to-site VPN connection between the home and remote locations. I am able to access SMB shares on the remote server from Win 10 machines on my home network without any problems. To test your use case, I went to Starbucks this morning and vpn'd to the remote router directly from my Win 10 laptop, and was still able to access SMB shares on the remote unRAID system. So I'm not sure why it isn't working for you, but I really don't think unRAID is doing anything to block your VPN / other subnet connections. A couple of other points: I have had problems with name resolution in the past, so I manually added both unRAID systems to my Windows hosts and lmhosts files (in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc) and that solved the problem. My work laptop is part of a domain for work, and not my local workgroup. This complicates authentication, but can be solved by going to the Windows Credential Manager and adding a "Windows Credential" for each unRAID server. Hope it helps! Using unRaid to run WINS I could access shares and I had name resolution -- the issue is just browsing. Browsing isn't a big issue but since I have it working using the other computers I might as well keep it that way
  5. Sophos is just a PFSense alternative. Ok so I misunderstood. I thought you had a site to site VPN that was on 24/7 and you were trying to browse across subnets. You're situation is quite different. I've setup my laptop to access the network remotely but that was all automatic and I've never tested if name resolution works.
  6. If you need more details I can post the actual WINS settings. I just didn't want to get into that level of detail if we're talking about something different.
  7. My understanding is that Broadcasts won't be sent over a VPN. This is my setup. 192.168.2.0/24 Office 10.1.1.0/24 Home I have a computer at each location running Sophos which establish a site to site VPN using IPsec I then have a masquerading rule for from the remote network to the local interface at each end. This alone gets you to being able to access any computer on either subnet using IP To get name resolution (and hopefully browsing) you need to then use WINS. At the office I have a Ubuntu server VM that I use for the internal web server so I designated it the WINS server for both networks. At home I set a Ubuntu computer to act as local master. These two machines then replicate and broadcast their computers to each other. The DHCP server at each end pushes out the WINS server and set the node type to H The last step is to allow NetBIOS traffic though your firewall. You just need to make a rule allowing the WINS server and the Local Master to pass NetBIOS back and forth and you're done.
  8. You can configure unRaid's SAMBA settings using Samba extra configuration (Go to Settings --> SMB and you'll see a huge text box). I'm actually in the process of moving WINS off unRaid and back to the the machines that were running it before. Using two unRaid machines I was able setup WINS to get cross-subnet name resolution but no browsing. I don't know if I did something wrong or not but I don't think I did. I've spent a couple of hours on it and since name resolution works I have to assume everything is setup correctly but browsing doesn't work and it was working before using a VM and an old Linux computer so I'm going back to that.
  9. Thanks for the response. I tried it but only had partial success. I copied the settings exactly from smb.conf then edited them to use the two unRaid IPs. That is the only thing I changed. I then changed the DHCP settings to push out the unRaid IPs as the new WINS server. Everything worked except for cross-subnet browsing. I know that can take some time but we've hit 24 hours and still nothing so I'm reverting back. Possibly I overlooked something but everything else works fine -- name resolution works.
  10. I have been able to get network discovery to work across networks. Not only name resolution but also windows browsing. I'm not using pfSense -- Sophos but should be similar Sophos sets up the site to site VPN On one end I have a Linux VM running in unRaid that acts as a WINS server. On the other end I have an old computer running Linux that does acts as the local master. I needed to add a rule to Sophos's firewall to allow NetBIOS traffic between these two machines. I also added a Masquerading rule at each end from the remote network to the local network. All the computers have the same workgroup. Works perfectly. Currently I'm testing using unRaid to act as the WINS server. So far I have name resolution but no browsing -- that can sometimes take time but if I don't have browsing by tonight I'll revert back to my original setup.
  11. WINS is still useful although in a limited way -- I'm currently using it so that I have windows browsing and name resolution across subnets. I'm currently using an old Linux machine that no longer has any purpose other than running WINS on one of the subnets. This topic is timely as on my to do list for today was copying the WINS config from SAMBA to unRaid in hopes that it would work. I don't know if it will but I figured it I copied the relevant settings from smb.conf to Samba Extra Configuration I was hoping that would allow me to have unRaid run WINS and then I could decommission the old computer. Anyone know if this will work? Easy enough to test but if someone know it will save me ~20 minutes or so.
  12. The new AMD 4XX GPUs? No. These were all card that were 2-3 years old.
  13. It seems like you are looking for a seedbox? You're probably going to be better served by just googling for that term and then researching from there.
  14. I've passed through three different Radeon HD all without issues
  15. I had the same issue and I haven't figured out how to fix it yet but I don't need to create any new VM for a while so I just moved on.
  16. I've never heard of a card that has USB and audio but you can but USB soundcards so just adding a USB card is all you need -- then you get a USB sound card for sound.
  17. Pull the card out and try it on a different machine would be my next play. As for Sophos UTM is has a GUI but you need to have a working NIC to access it. Sophos checks for NICs when installing -- if none are showing up how did you get past that?
  18. It depends on what you are doing with the headless-VMs. There is a limit to the graphic performance of RDP. There is a remote access option that is faster than RDP but I forget the name since I ended up not needing it. Basically if you are just using the other VMs for basic stuff you can run them headless using RDP -- this gives you the option of running them as windows or full screen. Windows 10 has build-in virtual desktops which would allow you to run the VMs full screen and basically have a software version of a video switch. Yes. At the moment I have four Windows VMs and two Linux VMs -- of those only one Windows VM has a graphics card. This is my office setup -- Windows 10 VM -- this is the main VM it has a graphics card. There is a second workstation that is a physical machine. One of the Windows VMs is running XP because of a legacy program we need to run that doesn't play nice on newer operating systems. The other VM runs Windows 7 with our website chat backend, Both of the main computers need access to these so they run as headless VMs. Whenever one of us needs one we click on a RDP short-cut and the VM opens on one of our screens as a Window. They could open up full screen but for our use Window works better since we can continue to work on other stuff on our main computers without giving up too much screen real estate. This works fine because we're doing basic office type stuff on the headless VMs. I highly doubt it would work for streaming video or gaming or anything graphics intensive.
  19. My setup is similar to danioj Bought two older computers and some extra NICs -- dirt cheap as everything combined was under $100. Installed Sophos on both -- acts as router / firewall / UTM (much like pfsense) and then just configured a site to site VPN. Then just set up Samba to act as a WINs server and now the home and office network are nicely unified. To access anything remotely Sophos has a easy to install client that I installed on my laptops. It connects it to the network having access to home and office simultaneously.
  20. You saved the vdisk but not the XML? If you recreate the XML using the same settings it should boot -- basically you can't have switched from SeaBIOS to OVMF although I think you can do with a different machine although I'm not certain of that. You will likely have an issue with activation because even if you create the exact same setting you won't have the same uuid number so you'll have to activate Windows again.
  21. Question about Postgresql The description says "for use with gitlab. Install this docker before installing the gitlab docker." I'd like to use it for something else. Is this a general Postgresql docker or is it limited to being used only for gitlab?
  22. I started having a similar issue when I start a Windows 10 VM -- I didn't have this issue previously but I changed a few things so not sure if from upgrading to 6.2 or something else. At first I thought the unRaid had become unresponsive and I had to reboot. After a few instances I realized that if I could access the shares and dockers and vms were working that unRaid should be as well. I waited and the GUI returned to working. I don't think it took several hours. More like 10-15 minutes but I can't be sure. After I realized it was just a matter of waiting I just let it be.
  23. There is a known issue with Windows updates and having USB devices plugged in -- not for everyone but some computers will not update if there are USB devices plugged in. This only impacts one of my computers but as long as I had the wireless keyboard / mouse plugged in the circle would just spin for hours. Eventually I googled it and found other people discussing it. Removed the USB device and update continued immediately. Possibly changing the type of USB has a similar impact.
  24. But do you have the update installed or did it restore the original version? I just had the anniversary edition install and to get it to happen I had to disable all the pass-through devices and remove all the assigned cores and just assign core 0. This worked and then I put everything back.
