Confused about Hard Drive Tuning Settings, no info
All SATA storage does, including SSD [just checked on the ones i have 4Tb Samsung's and they support NCQ] What is interesting to know if unRAID detects an NVMe device will it disable NCQ globally? That will suck and ill have to remove the single NVme from that PC BTW do you know how to install linux nvme format on unraid? I have some NVMe drives on windows they all run in emulated 512bytes mode [all commercial nvmes do], but you can change them to 4k and get 10% boost. on my Segate hard drives i did the same before building unraid, but i did on windows using seagate provided utility, it boosted the speed of my HDDs, some benchmark at 290Mb/s, before never above 265Mb/s [whats strange is that i have identical HDD's Seagate Exos x16, 14TB and couple 16Tb, and they benchmark between 245mb/s lowest to 290Mb/s highest, they all have power management features turned off and all have 4K enabled so why such speed difference between identical drives?] To change NVMe from emulating 512bytes to 4K, you need nvme command on linux The guide says to install it with this command sudo apt install nvme-cli I tried it on unraid, doesn't work, it has no sudo apt command Any ideas how it can be done, i dont want to create a separate ubuntu flash just to format the SSD's

I hope it detects it properly. And what modern Disks dont have NCQ? its been a feature for last 20ish years [maybe USB controllers?]

Confused about Hard Drive Tuning Settings, no info
Hello, Before posting I searched the topic and found a LOT of old Information with settings that no longer exposed to user and a 2020 post by some mod that says they no longer necessary and can harm the speed. But the latest unraid version has new settings and no information what they do and how to configure them If soemone can replay ill apriciate My config is ten 14tb drives, 2 16tb parity [not connected yet], and some SSDs, 32gb of RAM and i have 16gb swapfile enabled on optane SSD to help the CacheDir plugin if it ever needs more RAM. Tunable (enable NCQ): How to Force it to Yes, instead of Auto Tunable (nr_requests): ? Tunable (scheduler): 4 Options but no info what each does and which one is suited for what config? Tunable (md_num_stripes): The only old setting that i found info about but back than in 2016 it also had 2 other settings set with it, and we have just this one. How to set this number and based on what? RAM? Tunable (md_queue_limit): ? Tunable (md_sync_limit): ? Thank in advance

[Support] Linuxserver.io - diskover
So i been trying to find info what this does and i cant find any., I know it indexes, but how does it benefits a user? On windows i have indexing and it benefits search But how does running index on unraid can benefit a remote windows PC? or this program is only to index the unraid and than use it on linux VM? Thanks

Whats the Optimal CPU Config for NAS function?
Hello, Im trying to optimize power usage. 12700 non-K, in default 65W mode. Right now HT disabled, so i have 8+4 cores and 12 threads. I want to know how many P-Cores can be disabled without affecting unraid performance, mainly parity [x10 14tb HDDs + two 16tb parity HDDs, plus some SSDs for cache] Im not using any VM [service disabled], so far the only docker i used is Krusader. System is just for NAS + DLNA streaming + something [no idea yet what it is] to backup everything to GDrive, no encoding, no working on it, no virtual machines [unless there is a way to take an NVMe that has windows 11 installed and move it to unraid VM, otherwise if i ever need a backup PC i can dual boot into windows 11, but ill lose the hard drive access than]

Best way to setup shares on unRaid to reduce Spin-up time?
Im the only user of this build, basically its "external HDD" of sorts. When you say times out, it hangs or it lets you re-run the file? Eventually i plan to have all my media served back to me with Plex but only used as DLNA, no encoding, just to get movie/tv descriptions and genres. Not everything will be on the array, some will be as unassigned device with iscsi back to PC, i like the idea of remote storage, i mean ignoring the parity and all that, just using iSCSI for existing drives that were uglyfying and heating up my gaming build sounds insanely good, i mean how i never even considered the idea? I was thinking maybe I should keep one 18Tb HDD on my PC for emualtors [backed up to unraid], but now thinking i can just iscsi it from unraid and run emulators on it as if it was local storage, and run some plugin that will back up the content from unassigned HDD to the array i just got a switch on sale, two 10gb ports and five 2.5gb and im thinking maybe better to return it and connect the unraid directly to PC 10Gb to 10Gb and each connect to router with second Ethernet port, and this way on the 10Gb cards I could use Jumbo frames [which i cant use right now, at least from what i understand Jumbo frames they like MTU and I need 1492 MTU for PPPoe Fiber connection]

Best way to setup shares on unRaid to reduce Spin-up time?
Thanks for replay! trurl, do you know if CacheDir can be used with swap file plugin? Will unRaid swap the cachedir database to the swap file if there is one or it will purge it when RAM is needed? I mean, is it good idea to add 64Gb Swap on Optane ssd? [no need to buy anything, i had it already from before] If im missing something and you know about good uses for optane with unraid, please let me know, I want it used for what will have the best benefit for the unraid. Thanks

Best way to setup shares on unRaid to reduce Spin-up time?
Maybe im missing something, but even if you sorted your movies in alphabet folders, from my limited understanding, unRaid can split folders across drives, so your A folder can be on Disk 2 and Disk 5? Is that the recommended way to archive movies on unRaid? Whats your RAM usage? If i plan to not have any VMs, just generic NAS + media streaming without encoding and maybe DNS server I had Pie4 and adguard DNS and if its available as plugin for unrauid I would like to have it. Right now t he system [12700 non K] has 32Gb of RAM, would you say its enough to have cacheDirs at max setting to cache as much as posible and have enough for system usage? [At worst case i can buy 32Gb more but i rather not] Right now I installed a extra fast cache, 280Gb Optane U.2 SSD, i plan to use the swap file plugin and created 64GB swap file and see if it helps with Cache Dir, in theory it should, at least on windows it would be used, no idea if unraid will push the cached data to swap file. I have no use for this optane drive so now it can be good for something, and to make it the "system drive" make all the system folders go there and the swap file. Which algorithm would you recommend? for 14Tb drives Thanks for help!

Best way to setup shares on unRaid to reduce Spin-up time?
I mainly want to keep unused drives in permanent off state, i know that turning them on and off is unhealthy, in this case i rather they keep spinning. I build this unraid some days ago, first i have more drives than I ever need in near future so I had to decide if i rather use 50/50 14 and 16tb or load all 14tb except parity and when they eventually die swap them with 16. Then i started creating shares [with no parity in the system] and i basically went the same way i have my HDDs now [I have like a metal HDD box and each HDD has label like SciFi TV, Movies etc] So i created a share locked to some HDD, but honestly its not comfortable Do you have cache dirs plugin or whatever its called? it supposed to cache dir structure to RAM and when you browse file system you browse this cached list until you access the file Haven't been able to test how it works Do you have your HDDs in spin-down mode? can you check what happens when you browse on windows a share that split across many Hard drives? Does it spin them up?

Best way to setup shares on unRaid to reduce Spin-up time?
Hello, unRaid Noob here, need an opinion from someone with experience. Say you have 10 HDD array, and you have shares created with default settings, meaning in the bottom options to Included Disk set to all, excluded disk set to none. You also have HDD Spin-Down mode enabled for 1h. You have Movies, TV Series, Game shares and they all mapped as network drives on windows PC. Whats going to happen if say you decide to open the Movies share? Will it spin-up ALL the hard drives in your array while you browse the share? Because I assumed its going to spin up every HDD, I decided to manually configure shares and drives, like i give Movies share just this HDD and the TV series just 2 otehr HDD and the games just that HDD and the HDDs that i dont need right now permanently in spin down mode and nothing wakes them up But i assume its not the correct way to manage unraid? Whats the proper way that can both have unsused HDDs asleep and i wont have to manage space on hard drives? Thanks

Turbo write
Guys, I don't understand something here, it says all drives will spin up, is that assuming people have default share settings across all drives? What if i isolate shares per drive until they filled up [so other hdds are in permanent OFF mode] Will turbo write spin them up too, even if they empty and have no shares on them? Thanks

[Plugins] iSCSI GUI and ISCSI Target
I go by the name of this thread, iSCSI GUI and iSCSI Target, so i assumed its 2 plugins

iSCSI GUI too? or just iSCSI target No drivers, nothing special, just this and im done, right? Thanks

[Plugins] iSCSI GUI and ISCSI Target
Thank you Last question, what plugins do i need to install on unraid to achieve this? I googled and couldn't find a guide except 6 years old one that based on linux VM Thanks

[Plugins] iSCSI GUI and ISCSI Target
Thank you for replay. so if I want fast iSCSI is not protected by parity? unless i use FileIO which will be slow [isnt there any solution to run Parity on timer instead of live?] Block Device is just a remote HDD that instead of SATA is connected with ethernet LINK and I can format it with NTFS and even Bitlocker but I lose parity protection. I cant have both, protection and local disk like access P.S. Is it possible to take already used NTFS drive with games files, connect it to unraid [not part of the array] and ISCSI to it from windows? Basically I don't want hard drives on my main gaming build, just SSD's, so i want to remove 18TB HDD with emualtors and game footage to unraid. And i have 10GB aquantia between them so it shouldn't be slower than sata, the maximum 280Mb/s out of this HDD ill get on the network. If this possible, please tell me. Also, if i can backup the NTFS drive to the unraid array using some tool that will do it automatically, unless when its iSCSI mounted the unraid cant access its folders? Thanks in advance

Whats the recommend solution to single encrypted "vault" drive?
Hi, Thats what i did, I added the 500Gb SSD to array and used XFS Encrypted, the only issue is that upon reboot when it turns on the array it wants me to enter password. Is there any trick or plugin to have it auto-unlocked? Maybe changing the Root user password to be the same as the HDD password? Or a plugin? Thanks

Whats the recommend solution to single encrypted "vault" drive?
Hey, So i need to have my personal files moved from bitlocker HDD On the unraid i can encrypt the whole array, but its not needed for movies and games and will make recovery harder. So I added an extra 512GB SSD to use as Vault drive, i want to have it encrypted to store the documents. should I add it to the array [im yet to create one] Can it be done, so one drive on the array has password? Or as cache drive? [but in this case no parity protection] or as unassigned drive [same as cache] Thanks

unRaid hates JMicron JMB582 and JMB585 (1st FIS failed)
I disconnected the cables and connected to z690, works fine, zero issues. And the controlelr works fine in windows 585 is working fine for now It was only 582, maybe because its connected to wifi slot?

Please help: Is there any folder Encryption Options? Except XFS Encrypt
Hi, Is there any option to just encrypt folders, I have a bitlocker drive that i want to backup on unraid so i want it to stay locked and i heared XFS encrypted is not recommend, can get locked and wont unlock even with proper password etc What are my options? Is there any plugin to just encrypt a folder? About XFS Encrypt: Can i select just one HDD out all the ones i have and format it with XFS Encrypt? So just one drive, Will it have any negative effect? [Speed reduction?] Can it be unlocked after boot from the web gui or i need to have the PC connected to display and on every boot unlock the drive [like bitlocker does] Is there a way to save backup encryption key in case i forget the password like on bitlocker? Thanks in advance.

unRaid hates JMicron JMB582 and JMB585 (1st FIS failed)
So new user here I have just installed unRAID and unasighned devices plugin Trying to run full smart check [the long one] [before i tried it on windows 11 for couple of hours it worked fine, kjust aborted it assuming ill do it from unraid For starters on boot JMB582 may sync some HDD att SATA 2 mode When i click on test drive it will show "aborted by host" But unasghnied devices plugin shows more info, the FIS error will come in as many times as i press the SMART test buton, so one time i had 20+, also it starts going crazy and re-syncs the connections, tries to do UDMA/133 mode This is the latest log so its short Any Ideas? Both of these logs are from JMB582 , its a tiny X1 card that plugs into WiFi slot, i like it since it doesnt take space and im getting 260-280MB sequntal speeds when i run test on both HDDs at once [in windows] I have 2 slots on my mobo that i kept for future but I guess i have to re-plug for now Can it be the cables? Cant Boot: Invalid Signature Detected Check Secure Boot policy in setup
Update:If this happens to you, open BIOS go to security> secure boot, set to custom There should be an option to import profile/policy, go to USB>EFI> some_file_name.efi [the unRAID USB has to be plugged-in] click on it, its just ONE file with .efi, so dont worry, it will import whats needed, save bios and reboot If you made a mistake and clicked on another file, it will show error and let you do it again. The way i found it, i clicked Import on EVERY file one by one until i found the right one.
