  1. hey guys,

just wondering if anyone would be kind enough to do the numbers for me

this is what is is going to be in the rig:

    - 3x 3TB WD RED

    - 1x 1.5TB WD GREEN

    - 2x SSD

    - i7-3770 CPU

    - 4x4GB DDR3 RAM

    - NVIDIA gforce 970 for GPU (if I can get the pass through work)

should I be able to run this on a 420W PSU or do I need more power?

    thanks for the input

  2. no, it's not filling up, I just thought that with 2 SSD available I could dedicate one to just run dockers and host VM's. I'm upgrading my MB/CPU from a weak APU so will finally have the ability to play around with virtualization a bit. That is why i'm trying to figure out what would make the most sense to do with the two SSD's.

  3. hey guys,

    - is there a way to expand the docker container size?

I set the container to 20GB on a 128GB cache drive originally. Now I have a 256GB available so I was thinking of expanding the container to occupy the whole 128 drive. What would be the best setup to take advantage of both SSD? Should I use them in a cache pool or leave the 128 outside of the array to host the dockers only and use the 256 as a single cache drive?

I am moving my setup from a MB with 4 SATAIII ports to a MB with 2 SATAIII and 4SATAII ports. If I end up Setting up a cache pool, I should probably leave them on the SATAIII ports. The rest of the drives would be on SATAII including the parity drive, would I see a significant performance hit moving the array from current SATAIII to SATAII? I'd think the network despite being gigabit is still the bottle neck here.

  4. The only time you need a GPU in your UnRAID box is when you're going to pass through that GPU to a VM for a specific reason, be it running a monitor/TV off the GPU to run Kodi/Plex/Emby, or using the GPU for compute duties like folding@home/crypto currency mining/media transcoding.

Otherwise, normal VMs can use the "VNC" graphics, which means you don't need a GPU in your machine - heck your machine can run off an 8MB PCI VGA card, or no graphics at all.

I used to run a heap of VMs on UnRAID and the machine either had the 8MB Matrox G200 built in to the iKVM chip, or used an old 8MB ATI RageXL PCI.

Transcoding? Can a docker use it for Transcoding? Is there more info on this? I'd love to be able to have a docker use a dedicated GPU for transcoding as I'd like my UNRAID's CPU to be as power efficient as possible.

  5. I wonder if there has been any development on a user friendly way to synchronize google drive a docker or a plugin would be really great. I see a lot of people looking for this feature.

I'm basically looking for a local copy of my gdrive but would love to be able to do this with all my cloud storage. Is there perhaps another way of doing this?

  6. How compact are you looking?

I have a NODE 804 http://www.fractal-design.com/home/product/cases/node-series/node-804 for my home unRAID.

It's a tiny, cubic, super quiet and supports mATX.

    8x 3.5 Drives

    2x 2.5 Drives

    and a 290mm long GPU.

yes, this is exactly the case I've been looking at for the mATX build. I have to check the foot print and make sure it fits into the cabinet where my wife doesn't see it. She doesn't want to see the box but requires new content each month, go figure...

  7. thanks for the suggestions guys.

based on what has been said, I might just look at upgrading the whole array including migrating the build to a mATX form factor as long as i can find a compact enough case.

based on the pass-mark I should be able to get by with an i3-6100 or 6300 without having to go to a much more power hungry setup compared to my current APU (38W idle). That would also give me a lot of upgradability potential later on.

  8. hey folks,

so i have a E5-2620 v2 available that I'd love to use to upgrade my current APU setup. The thing is, the MB has to be an ITX.

Is anyone aware of an ITX board that would work with E5-2620 v2? I wasn't able to find one.

if that's not a go, I'm considering an i3-6100 build for future proof setup. In general, does the skylake architecture provide significant benefits over older hardware for unraid application? (nas, few dockers and an odd VM for office work, perhaps gaming later on?)

  9. hey folks,

I'm not too familiar with how docker containers handle the resources so I'd like to ask about this scenario:

my unraid server is running on older AMD APU. I have the emby server running of of the docker but on some of the transcoding operations the CPU is maxed out and the playback is choppy. If I add a GPU like Quadro K2000 that I have laying around, would the docker container be able to take advantage of it?

    thanks,

  10. hey there,

is there a way to manually update the mariaDB within the needo docker? Apperently the new kodi Jarvis has a bug that prevents the video database from working properly unless you update to 10.1.12.

the needo docker page says it's version 5.5, the docker container shows as up to date when the check for update button is pressed.

what are my options, should i just look for a more up to date container and start from scratch or there is a way to update the database version within the docker?

    thanks in advance

  11. thanks for the suggestions,

I don't have a lot of horse power, probably enough to have a win7 VM running but I'd much rather have a docker doing the job.

how does the VPN config looks in Deluge? does it have a Gui or would I need a config file? would someone be able to share a screenshot?

  12. hey there fellow unraid users,

I'm looking for the easiest way to achieve a setup where I could utilize my VPN (Private Internet Access) with a torrent client. Is there a plugin that would accommodate this or do I need to go with a VM with a full blown OS and then just set up VPN there to do this? Sounds like an overkill to have a full VM to do just that.

    thanks for the insight!

  13. thanks again for the replies,

I was finally able to use chkdsk to repair the drive. It turned out it was a bad sector that corrupted the drive so I needed to use the proper switch for the check disk command to repair bad sectors.

again, I'm just kinda worried that this will happen again

So stop the array, and backup all of the files on the flash drive.  You can then start the array again.

Now, buy a new NAME BRAND Flash drive of at least 8GB.  Copy the files that you back up from the original Flash drive to it. run the make_bootable.bat file as Administrator.    Shut the server down and reboot with the new Flash drive.  Now follow these instructions:

        http://lime-technology.com/replace-key/

    thanks,

this actually is a 32GB SONY Micro Vault, only about a year old too. I'm using internal 9 pin to USB header adapter that feels a bit loose, I wonder if that might be the cause of the corruption.

    http://www.amazon.ca/Motherboard-Double-Female-Internal-Adapter/dp/B019DY03AA/ref=sr_1_22?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1451498558&sr=1-22&keywords=female+usb+to+9+PIN+adapter

  14. so I guess you're right :(. The USB drive does show up under Win10 but doesn't open, I can run chkdsk on it and is says the errors were corrected, but the drive still doesn't open properly.

    - do I have any other option how to attempt to repair the USB drive?

    - How would the USB drive become corrupted in the first place? If I'm going to start from scratch I'd like to avoid this in the future.... should I get a new USB drive just to be sure?

    - I suppose the data on the drives is still intact, what's my best option to recover the array without risking the data with a fresh config?

  15. hello,

I have just attempted to update to 6.1.6 from 6.1.4 via the plugin upgrade page as usual. The package was downloaded and installed successfully, after I rebooted the server as prompted, it never came back again.

I can dial into the server via telnet but the shares nor the homepage is available.

I ran a parity check 2 days ago and it came out clear. The server has been very reliable otherwise.

I wanted to ask on the best approach before I attempt to do anything myself. the log is attached

    thanks in advance

  16. I'm having similar issues with the GUI flakiness, the array in general appears to be working so I'm assuming it is just the GUI itself that is unresponsive. The browser appears to be trying to retrieve data as the refresh wheel keeps spinning on my Tower Chrome Tab.

I've come across multiple posts that suggested a lack of RAM might be causing emhttp being terminated, would someone be able to indeed confirm that based on the below, since it doenst tell me anything :(

root@Tower:~# ps aux | grep emhttp
    root      1385  1.3  0.0  89076  3576 ?        Rl   Mar16  77:15 /usr/local/sbin/emhttp
    root     17745  0.0  0.0   5104  1720 pts/0    S+   19:45   0:00 grep emhttp

    root@Tower:~# free -m
total       used       free     shared    buffers     cached
    Mem:          3560       3339        220          0        169       2805
    -/+ buffers/cache:        364       3196
    Swap:            0          0          0

if restarting the whole server is the preferred way to get the GUI back, what's the best way to go about a clean shutdown from the console.
