  1. Hey all, I have a production facility where we use lots of little VM's to run many small windows machines. Wondering what people's thoughts are about having all domains/vdisks loaded onto a central, very fast SSD NAS. Currently have 2 servers each running 5-6 VM's each. These VM's are light but need to be Windows and be used via GUI on a regular basis. UNRAID: Dell Poweredge R620 E5-2690 v2 (20/40, 3Ghz) 128G RAM Teamed 20G, can put 1 or 2x 100Gbe Unfortunately, these came loaded with PERC arrays, backplanes, cards, and drives. So they're currently 4x RAID0 arrays - 1 parity, 3 Disks to UNRAID. Not a huge fan of this. We have a really fast, large SSD NAS. Currently running Windows server, but planning on replacing that with a zfs filesystem (or something faster, still not 100% sure)... Thoughts below: Fast vdisk storage over network. What would be the best protocol here? SSD NAS Backed up frequently to slower, larger storage. So we can go full speed ahead on this SSD NAS. What would even be the best host OS? SSD NAS not purely dedicated to VM storage, need to use it as a super-quick company NAS as well (large, temporary content transfers). SSD NAS is either 1x or 2x 100Gbe. Currently 2x 40Gbe. What you're probably thinking: Can I just put UNRAID on the SSD NAS? Yes, but there's not enough cores to really make it a good VM host. Can I put cache drives in the Unraid machines? Yes, and I will, but there was a certain appeal to having the vdisks for multiple unraid machines on one central superfast location. This also helps with a bit of redundancy What I'm thinking: Is this past the scope of using Unraid as a hypervisor? Should I be running VM in VMWare or something more enterprise based? I've gone down the ESXI route before but keep getting scarred by the cost (last time it was a distributed switch thing for using lot's of VLANS). Appreciate any thoughts. Open to any and all ideas, even radical ones
  2. Hi all, Quick question: If all my files for a share are on the disk, why are they "unprotected"? I have multiple shares that are status "unprotected" with 0B on the cache. Mover does not change status. Thanks!!
  3. I think I found my problem. I had been using a plugin called VFIO-PCI CFG to interrupt my GPU with all it's audio and USB devices, as well as a USB card, for my Win10 VM. I reviewed the settings page for that page by chance and noticed the SATA controller was checked. I unchecked and things are working much better now - currently rebuilding array with no loss of data.

  5. I shutdown, removed a drive, rebooted. Worked for a bit, then i had I/O errors on all disks according to the disk logs. Then the parity drive became disabled. Diagnostics attached. They're all having I/O errors, but my NVME SSD is fine. Motherboard problem?? I'm using the onboard sata for my disk drives. atlantis-diagnostics-20200415-1356.zip

  7. Hi! I was unsure about that, so I have been tracking by Serial as well - it happened to line up every time so I assumed the SDx values wouldn't change. You can assume it's consistent, I've been checking, but I'll stop doing that from now on.....
  8. On reboot, the missing drives show again. Screenshot attached. Theoretically, all my data is on the disk SDD, with an accurate parity in SDB. Any suggestions? SDC was the unformatted disk that caused the red X to appear next to SDD when I tried to reformat it. I'm not going to rebuild or take any steps from here until I get some advice. Thanks!
  9. Hi All, Been having some real trouble with UnRaid recently and could use some help. I built a new system recently - Ryzen 3900x, with 3x 4TB drives, 1x NVME SSD Cache. (Full Diagnostics are attached.) This had been up and running fine for about 2 weeks before these issues started. All 3 disks were in my previous NAS 2 weeks ago working beautifully, and I ran extended smart tests on all last week that came clean, except for a 1 count UDMA CRC error. The array was about 3TB full as of yesterday. Disk SDD had a red X next to it yesterday. Previously this disk had no errors, so I attempted to restore the array, hoping for a quick fluke in the write process that had disabled it. I did a lot of troubleshooting steps, I'm trying to include as much information as I can remember. Here's how I went from there: Shutdown system. Verified all solid SATA connections and power connections. Rebooted. New config with disk SDB and SDD. That config ran overnight, all SMART results were good, and parity disk SDB rebuilt with SDD data and everything worked. So I had a good array with a cache, partity drive (SDB) and data drive (SDD). All green, 0 errors. My other disk, disk SDC was showing up as problematic. I ran XFS_repair, it couldn't help with anything. Bad superblock, bad magic number, everything. Since that disk didn't actually have data on it, I deleted the partition and was going to have unraid reformat. SDC Showed up as unmountable, no filesystem, and there was the format unmountable disks checkbox. It started formatting SDC, and then the array crashed. Disk SDC never got formatted and still showed up as bad, and Disk SDD had a red X next to it. Trying to redo the configuration, it just seems like everything is..breaking. Trying to reconfigure the array, all my disk's disappeared (screenshot attached). On reboot, the disappeared disks come back, but trying to reconfig the array, they all disappear when I try to use the dropdown menu and reassign. I'm not sure how to troubleshoot anymore. This problem came out of the blue, and all the disk's show up in bios everytime. If I can restore the array without losing the data on SDD that would be great, but it's not the end of the world if not. What's my next step? I appreciate all the help.
