Turns out the reason is that the log is full (it also caused me not to be able to download diagnostics data).
I will try to figure out what spams the log file, and there seem to be numerous threads already that might help me.

Hi all,
when I open the webterminal, it cycles between "Connection closed" and "Reconnected". I can not use it.
Previously it was working fine.
What causes this?
What can I do apart from rebooting?
I am using latest unraid, client is Win 10 with latest Chrome.
I'm seeing issues reported in this thread since a few weeks to.
- webterminal does not work
- web VNC does not work
- log 100%, spammed with ngix error
I don't have any webterminal tabs open. Would be nice to get some support on this issue...
At least you're getting somewhere, for me it is terribly slow to download

With maybe a percent every minute. The same file I can download on my computer on the same network within seconds.
Udating docker containers on the other hand is very fast (also when downloading data).
