  1. Reviving an old thread here. I have the same problem. Popped an older 1TB NVMe drive from my old PC into my Unraid server and want to use it as a cache drive. I formatted it, but forgot to delete the partition, so I need to be able to either remove the partition or repartition it. I wanted to try this solution, but the Beta Preclear plugin doens't seem to exist any more. I've found the "Unassigned Devices Preclear" app, installed it, but it doen't find the drive, even though it's under "unassigned devices". I've now mounted it, but it still doesn't find it. See below. What can I do to preclear this drive? Or remove its partitions in a different manner? If all else fails, I guess I could pull the drive from the Unraid server again, but that's kind of a hassle since it's not easily accessible, so I'd like to use that as a "last resort" kind of option. Thanks!
  2. Ok, I'm back! Did the firmware upgrade of the ASM1166 card in my AMD Zen 3 system, worked fine!! Now Unraid sees the drive, cheers for that! The network issues seem to have been fixed too with the deletion of the "network.cfg" file. So all seems good now! Thank you very much for a very swift and knowledgeable response!
  3. Thank you both for the speedy responses! I will delete that file and report back here. With regards to the firmware update of the ASM1166 card, I've found a thread here which indeed says exactly that. I've found a how to here. I'll try this and report back here! Edit : for future reference: you can find the firmware update for the ASM1166 on the Silverstone website here. Search for ""Fix compatibility issue and support Intel 600 series chipset motherboard", and download the file from that link. Thank you very much!
  4. Thank you for your help, much appreciated!! I've now tried what you suggested, found the setting in the BIOS that disabled the onboard LAN, and booted back into Unraid. But now it seems I've got another problem, well two in fact, but unrelated. The first problem I have is that when Unraid boots, the last thing the boot process shows is the IP v4 and IPV6 addresses. Well sometimes it correctly shows 192.168.1.119, but sometimes it incorrectly shows 169.254.194.X (last number purposely deleted) OR even "not set" In the first two cases I can login to the GUI with 192.168.1.119 though. In the first case the server works relatively ok and I have access to my plugins etc (could update them). In the second case, I do not. In the third case, I can't even login. I have no idea what is causing this and it seems random. Fix common problems says : "eth0 and eth1 both have IP addresses on the 192.168.1.0 network." But in network settings I can only see Eth0, which is called Br0. I see no Eth1 ?? "Ifconfig" in a terminal window also only shows "Br0", "Eth0" and "Lo". I have no idea what is going on here, I'm not very Linux savvy. This is what Network setup now shows: The second problem I have is with my SATA drives. Because this board only came with 4 SATA ports and I have 5 drives, I've bought this ASM1166 card and added it to the system. Unfortunately, the drive connected to it, which is my cache drive, doesn't seem to show up. Strange because I specifically searched for an ASM1166 card because I've read here these are automatically supported in Unraid. Am I doing something wrong? Does anybody know how I can check if this card works? Because I've never used such an external SATA card. Edit: I've now tried with removing the external SATA card, and after boot, Unraid says the IPV4 IP is 192.168.1.119. But I can't log into Unraid with that exact IP... nothing happens.... So I'm guessing it's getting even worse. 😔 Does somebody have an answer for my two problems please? I've added diagnostics to my post. Thanks so very much! tower-diagnostics-20230406-2113.zip
  5. Hi all ! After two or three years of not using it, I felt like tinkering with my Unraid system again. Unfortunately, it seemed dead. So I upgraded all it's hardware (to Intel B760 mobo with i5 13500 CPU), except for the drives and of course the USB stick. All seemed to work. I can login to the system, but the system says it has no internet access, which is strange because it's connected to the same switch my other PC is connected to ( on which I'm now writing this post). There should be internet access no problem. The funny thing is, I can access the files on my Unraid server via the LAN on my Windows PC without a problem. So there is a network connection. I can login to the GUI and look at all the settings, ... When I look at the network settings, on the bottom there is a warning : "Interface Ethernet Port 0 is down. Check cable!" Which seems odd since I can access the GUI. I've added an Asus XG-C100C 10 Gbe card to the system which I'm using now to access the GUI. The built-in 2.5 Gbe port on the motherboard itself does not seems to work for some reason. I've manually updated the USB stick (by copying the bz* files to the thumb drive) because I figured that maybe my hardware was too recent for my version of Unraid to support it but that doesn't seem to have helped, even though now I'm on version 6.11.5 (coming from 6.5 or something) Could anybody please tell me why Unraid can't connect the intenet? I'm very sure it's not the ethernet feed to the Unraid array. Thank you so much!
  6. That worked! 👍 Thanks a million! 😁 (I feel stupid now)
  7. Hi all, After more than ten years, my old Unraid setup's motherboard gave up the ghost and I decided to do some investing and bought myself a very recent Asus Intel B760M-A D4 (DDR4 mobo) combined with an Intel 13500 CPU. It's been years since I've browsed a motherboard's bios, but I see lots has changed. For one, I can't seem to find how to boot UNRAID from the USB thumbdrive, because the USB stick doesn't show up in the boot menu! 😵 I've already found this tutorial by Asus, but it's no good to me because the BIOS is different. This video says to disable secure boot, but I can't find such an option! The stupid part is the BIOS does see the USB stick, since I can update the BIOS from it. Worked perfectly. It also shows the thumstick's name in one of the menu's. It just doesn't show up in the boot menu so I'm stuck. I got a feeling that I just need to turn on some legacy option of some sort, but I can't seem to find it. Could somebody please help? Thanks!
  8. It's what I've read here on the forums. No first hand experience, no. Because I still don't have an AMD unraid setup.
  9. Did any of the owners of this board actually test these beta bios'es and check if it resolves the issues (like network speed etc)?
  10. No, I don't. But you may be right about that. This board's only got two PCIexpress slots, one x16 and one x1. All the rest are old school PCI slots. That's saying something. I think the time has come to upgrade my unRaid box. 😁
  11. Sorry for the late reply, didn't get around to it yesterday. I tried your suggestion, but nothing happens. When setting this as a static address and switching the cable, the lights of the NIC don't start to blink. It's like the card is turned off.
  12. No, I removed the disk, had the system rebuild parity and everything is peachy again. Except for the fact that I now only have 89 GB free space left. 😳 But that's fixed easily enough. 😇 Thanks for trying to help!
  13. Thanks both. That was simple enough! 🙈 Parity building is now humming along nicely. It'll probably be done by midnight. Cheers for the swift response!
  14. Hi all, A while back unraid reported that one of my disks was starting to fail (showing errors), so I decided to copy all the stuff of the disk to other disks in the array and remove it. Luckily, there was not much stuff on it. I couldn't copy all files because some files were acting weird. I couldn't even delete them, and hence, I couldn't delete the folder they were in on the disk. I decided to simply remove the disk ; I still had a copy of what was left on the disk elsewhere, so not a problem. I shut down the system and removed the disk. They after rebooting the system I got the mention that disk 4 was missing. I then realized that I did it wrong : I had to unassign the drive before removing it. So I re-attached the disk, booted up again and the system welcomed the drive back. I then unassigned it, shut down again and removed the disk. Now the disk still shows up with a red cross, saying : "device is missing (disable) - contents emulated". I don't want this, I want it gone. How can I do this?
  15. No. They don't even show up in explorer. Nor in Unraid, when I click though the folder view directly on the disk (on the "main" tab). Strangely enough, Unraid does not say "no files", but rather "No listing: Too many files" (but doesn't show any). Edit : nevermind, I was going to remove this disk anyway, and now I did. Guess I'll never know what happened, but it doesn't matter also.
  16. I'm in the same board, so I'll follow this topic. My setup is an Asus Intel board with a E8500 Dual core. It's more than 10 years old and indeed getting a bit long in the teeth. I'm also on the lookout for a nice setup. Now leaning towards AMD because they give you more bang for your buck, but on the other hand they immediately force you to also install a video card with it because their APU's are hard to come by (the more powerful ones anyway, like the 4700G or 4750G Pro) Usually you can't even buy them officially (OEM only). Another downside from those APU's is that they always seem to lag one CPU generation behind (currently Zen 2 cores - the 5700G, which will feature Zen 3 cores, is still not out yet), and I also think they can't address as many external devices because of the integrated video card, and the APU doesn't support passthrough. Now, for me that last issue won't probably be a big one because I still use my Unraid box mostly for file storage and streaming, not VM. But that might change in the future, and as you say yourself, I also don't feel like upgrading every 2 years or so. So I also want a bit of overkill on this machine. I've also noticed some hardcore users are using Intel Xeon or AMD Threadripper CPU's on their boards, which are usually professional server boards by Supermicro or the like then. This is good for their use case, but way too much for mine. I know it might not be an excellent idea to run a server 24/7 from enthusiast hardware, but that is exactly what I've been doing for the past 10 years and will continue to do so. I simply cannot justify the added price to myself because I'm not using Unraid professionally. I'm currently reading the thread about the Gigabyte X570 AORUS range. Those would be a good candidate I think (supports ECC RAM I believe, while Intel non-Xeon setups do not) To be honest, I'm more of an Asus man myself (like the ASUS TUF Gaming X570 series), but it seems in this case, Gigabyte has them beat. (not sure why yet though, still reading up on that).
  17. Thanks for the info! But alas, it doesn't work. The files are still there. When I do "ls" on that specific directory, it also seems as it the files have no attributes? (see Putty screenshot). Very strange!
  18. I'm trying to remove a disk that's starting to go bad from the array. Before I do that, I'm trying to copy everything from the disk to the rest of the array with Unbalance. That worked, sorta. I've got one specific directory in which there are 20 or so files that don't move. In the end I started midnight commander via a terminal window and tried like that, but it says : "Cannot stat "filename" - No such file or directory". All the files are now in red with a question mark as the first character in their filename. Is there a way to get rid of these files, or is this the result of what Unraid started to report - disk errors and the disk going bad? It's not a huge problem, I still have those files stored elsewhere, but I'm just wondering. Thanks!
  19. That was it!! Cheers for that! I can now click "plan", and the planning starts, but I can still not click move or copy, or uncheck "dry run". But this is probably because there's not enough free space left on the destination drive. Strange, I thought there was. Certainly when I count the cache drive too, but maybe Unbalance doesn't move to the cache drive? Edit : indeed, it was because of too little space on the destination drive, because if I go further up the tree, effectively lowering the amount of data that needs to be transferred, I can move it. Still, I do wonder why it doesn't just copy to the cache drive too? Edit 2 : turns out there was a problem with some of the files on the drive, and Unbalance broke its teeth on those. See here. So no problem with Unbalance at all. Thanks a lot for all the help!
  20. I'll try that tomorrow, got to go to work now. Thanks for the help so far!
  21. No problem. I've just switched both cards to my Windows machine, but indeed, both run 3.1.88, so no newer firmware available.
  22. On another note, I've also noticed that TP-link now also makes such 10Gbit cards. Are those more recent in their firmware? Maybe also support WOL etc? (don't need it right now, but you never know...)
  23. Yes, the port is enabled. I simply switch the same cable that's in my 1 Gigabit NIC to the 10 Gbit NIC. So I'm sure it works, because it works perfectly with the 1 Gbe. The switch is also a unmanaged switch, so there's nothing to set up. That, and it works perfectly with my Windows PC and Qnap NAS.
