Intel 13th and 14th Gen CPU, Concerns?
I am leaning toward getting an intel i9 14900 65w version for my unraid server upgrade. My use is primarily Plex, jellyfish and video content storage (large 200GB files). I am upgrading because I can't stream any of my 4k content or raw content on plex. I also need better network throughput and have limitations with my motherboard and CPU. I also would like to get into VMs. I am not really a gamer so no overclocking here. It is my understanding the current versions of this CPU do not have the voltage issue or rather they have resolved the issue by motherboard updates. Given that it took years to change my current setup I would love to get another 10 years out of this one. Any real concerns?

New Uraid Build, Feedback?
I have an old unraid build (at least 8 years old) that runs like a top but it prevents me from expanding into different capabilities. With this new build I want to future proof myself while also not having something so power hungry. Not the cheapest build but I hope it gives me the ability to expand (future graphics card, network card (dual SPF+ 10GB maybe SFP 28GB), VMs and transcoding (4K uncompressed files for PLEX and Jellyfish). My current server prevents all of this. I would like to keep my case unless I can find something similar. If I bought a new case I would transfer this old to a test server. I have an LSI HBA card (LSI SAS2116 PCI-Express Fusion-MPT SAS-2 [Meteor] (rev 02)) that I would also like to keep. I have 16 drives now and can expand to 20. I may also want to buy a new power supply but not sure on that yet. That means a new MB, CPU, storage (M2 cache) and memory. Maybe on new case and power supply. This is what I found. Any glaring issues? Compatibility problems? I don't think this MB will work with ECC. Power Supply Do I need one? Mine is about 8 years old and 750 watts.

I might just live with it for now. I have been thinking about upgrading my server for 4K transcoding. Just another advantage to upgrading.

Hmmm... do they make faster versions or is this a SATA limiation? My server is old so no NVME.

10gb transfers drop half way through
I really don't need 1TB (which is what I have now). Also there are some errors on my current cache drive. For $55 I could by the 500GB version of the EVO. Would this solve my problem of limited turbo speeds for 100GB files? https://www.amazon.com/SAMSUNG-500GB-Internal-MZ-77E500B-AM/dp/B08QBMD6P4/ref=asc_df_B08QBMD6P4/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=692875362841&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=5722533018106623447&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9008123&hvtargid=pla-2281435180938&mcid=789e57033e423e47ba624b30a23301bf&hvocijid=5722533018106623447-B08QBMD6P4-&hvexpln=73&gad_source=1&th=1

That may be it. It has 42GB of turbo write. I had no idea. That info is buried and not in their standard specs.

10gb transfers drop half way through
I recently upgraded my nic to a 10gb card. My server is pretty old but runs like a top. I have a 512 GB samsung SSD setup as cache. I have my workstation and server connected to 10GB switch via a DAC cable and everything seems to be working fine. However, when I try and transfer a large file, like a 60GB file, it hums along at 500 MB/s for about 40 seconds then drops to 80 MB/s. I am wondering if it is my SSD, CPU (old) or some setting I should change. Any help is appreciated.auburn-diagnostics-20240815-1115.zip

Pre built, plug and play servers?
I am curious if anyone builds and sells unraid servers... something plug and play?

New NIC Not Being Deteted in Unraid
I had tried to get into my bios but could not. I looked on line and found that there is a bug with my motherboard. After resetting the CMOS I could get into the BIOS. I flipped on a couple of enable features for PCIe and after several reboots the card showed up. I changed the card to ethos 0, rebooted a couple of times and everything seems to be working. Keeping fingers crossed.

New NIC Not Being Deteted in Unraid
I am running unraid 6.12.10 and have been using my motherboard built in nics with no problem. I finally decided to upgrade a couple of workstations to 10GB and wanted to do the same for my unraid server. I can see that NIC is seated properly and is getting power green light but it is not showing up in my system devices on unraid. I have rebooted a couple of times but no joy. My mother board has four PCI-E slots. The first slot is being used by an LSI card. I tried both the PCI-E 3.0/2.0 x8 and PCI-E 2.0 x 4 slots but no success. Here is the nic I bought off newegg: https://www.newegg.com/10gtek-x520-da1/p/14U-00AM-00002?Item=9SIA9Z94VP3327 Old motherboard (Supermicro X95CL/X95CM) : https://www.supermicro.com/manuals/motherboard/C202_C204/MNL-1270.pdf Should I buy a different card? Which one?

Rebuild of Server, For 4K transcode and 10GB ethernet
My media Server is getting close to 10 years old and am looking to upgrade because of 4K content. I have 2K movies in 1080P and close to 500 MKV 4K uncompressed rips of movies. With my current server it can't handle transcoding the 4K movies. I would like to watch my media and for others to watch my 4K movies using Plex and Jellyfish. I would also like to store movies and other large files on server without it taking 30-40 minutes to transfer. I plan on buying a unifi agg switch and connect to my workstations and my rebuiult sever to my sever using 10GB SPF+. I am looking for something rock solid that will last and don't want to spend days getting it going so looking for a proven mother board and CPU that will more than meet my needs. While money is important I don't mind spending more for future proofing and something I know I can spend a day on getting going without troubleshooting known issues. Between the new motherboard and CPU I would like to keep cost around $1K. CURRENT SERVER: Unraid 6.12.10, SuperMicro X95CL/X9SCM , Intel Xeon CPU E3-1230 v2 @ 3.3 GHz, 8GB DDR3, Samsung 1TB SSD for Cache, LSII SA2116 PCI Express SAS-2 controller, 2 Parity 8TB, 6 8TB disks, 5 4TB disks for total of 11 disks for storage excluding parity. NEW SERVER REQUIREMENTS: Use existing chassis, New motherboard, new CPU. AMD or Intel? Which version? Needs a built in SPF+ nic. Do I need a new powersupply? POWER CONSUMPTION: Not too much more than the current Server. HARD DRIVES (Same as Current): 2 Parity 8TB, 6 8TB disks, 5 4TB disks for total of 11 disks. VMs: None that I can for see. But would like 1 to be available if needed in future. DOCKERS that would be normally in use: 1.Plex and Jellyfin be able to stream at least 3-4 4K movies at once. TRANSCODING: Up to 6 streams at a time for Plex and Jellyfish in 4K without issues.

Preclear plugin
That was annoying. I had not rebooted my server in about 160 days. Everything was fine so why bother. I just rebooted the server and now i am able to pre-clear the drive. Bug?

I got another drive and installed and am having the same issue. I noticed on the last drive I was getting Seek error rate numbers and on this NEW drive I am getting them again. This time 483. Preclear plugin
I just added a new 8TB drive to my server and am attempting to preclear the drive. I see the drive in unassigned devices and in the preclear plugin. I clicked the start preclear link and it shows as "starting". Does not start the actual preclear process. I tried this twice. Bad drive? Do I need to format it? Here is what is showing in the log: Mar 8 13:02:23 AUBURN kernel: sd 7:0:12:0: [sdo] 15628053168 512-byte logical blocks: (8.00 TB/7.28 TiB) Mar 8 13:02:23 AUBURN kernel: sd 7:0:12:0: [sdo] 4096-byte physical blocks Mar 8 13:02:23 AUBURN kernel: sd 7:0:12:0: [sdo] Write Protect is off Mar 8 13:02:23 AUBURN kernel: sd 7:0:12:0: [sdo] Mode Sense: 7f 00 00 08 Mar 8 13:02:23 AUBURN kernel: sd 7:0:12:0: [sdo] Write cache: enabled, read cache: enabled, doesn't support DPO or FUA Mar 8 13:02:23 AUBURN kernel: sd 7:0:12:0: [sdo] Attached SCSI disk Mar 8 13:12:24 AUBURN kernel: sd 7:0:12:0: [sdo] Synchronizing SCSI cache Mar 8 13:12:24 AUBURN kernel: sd 7:0:12:0: [sdo] Synchronize Cache(10) failed: Result: hostbyte=0x01 driverbyte=0x00 Mar 8 13:12:49 AUBURN kernel: sd 7:0:13:0: [sdo] 15628053168 512-byte logical blocks: (8.00 TB/7.28 TiB) Mar 8 13:12:49 AUBURN kernel: sd 7:0:13:0: [sdo] 4096-byte physical blocks Mar 8 13:12:49 AUBURN kernel: sd 7:0:13:0: [sdo] Write Protect is off Mar 8 13:12:49 AUBURN kernel: sd 7:0:13:0: [sdo] Mode Sense: 7f 00 00 08 Mar 8 13:12:49 AUBURN kernel: sd 7:0:13:0: [sdo] Write cache: enabled, read cache: enabled, doesn't support DPO or FUA Mar 8 13:12:49 AUBURN kernel: sd 7:0:13:0: [sdo] Attached SCSI disk

Preclear plugin
I just added a brand new 8TB drive to my server. I clicked unassigned devices so it would show up. It took a while for it to be listed. I went into unassigned devices and looked at the log and see this: Oct 7 11:51:56 AUBURN kernel: sd 7:0:21:0: [sdn] 15628053168 512-byte logical blocks: (8.00 TB/7.28 TiB) Oct 7 11:51:56 AUBURN kernel: sd 7:0:21:0: [sdn] 4096-byte physical blocks Oct 7 11:51:56 AUBURN kernel: sd 7:0:21:0: [sdn] Write Protect is off Oct 7 11:51:56 AUBURN kernel: sd 7:0:21:0: [sdn] Mode Sense: 7f 00 00 08 Oct 7 11:51:56 AUBURN kernel: sd 7:0:21:0: [sdn] Write cache: enabled, read cache: enabled, doesn't support DPO or FUA Oct 7 11:51:56 AUBURN kernel: sd 7:0:21:0: [sdn] Attached SCSI disk Oct 7 11:53:04 AUBURN unassigned.devices: Error: shell_exec(/usr/sbin/hdparm -C /dev/sdn 2>/dev/null | /bin/grep -c standby) took longer than 10s! When it did show up this is what is showing in the unassigned device area: I can't click format. I decided to go in and try to pre-clear the drive and when I select start pre-clear the process starts but just shows as starting.... I gave it about 30 minutes but still shows as starting. I stopped the pre-clear and status still showed as starting. I cleared the status so now it says Start Preclear. I removed the drive and inserted it back in. I it recognized the drive and started preclear. Now it stuck on starting for 1 hour. Attaching diagnostics. Am I doing something wrong? Bad disk? Anything I should be checking? auburn-diagnostics-20201007-1439.zip

Final Build - Last Hardware Thread I Promise!
I think that approach is best. See what you get from SSD to SSD over your network. Hard disk is not a good test for 10gb.

Final Build - Last Hardware Thread I Promise!
It took me four straight days/nights to copy all my files (30TB) from my old disks to my new disks. I was getting the same speeds using Krusader as well which ranged form 80 to sometimes a consistent 110MB. Happy to hear about the stability. PM me if you have questions. I am by no means an expert.. only been using Unraid for aobut 3 months but I have learned TONS in that timeframe. If you are not already doing so, watch the Space Invader videos on YouTube they are great.

Great. I am interested to see how the hardware all works. Your build is very similar to what I intend to build. I am very interested in how it all works, in particular how your Ryzen works with motherboard, your P2200 and plex and overall performance and stability.

Final Build - Last Hardware Thread I Promise!
Don't get too excited about your 10GB transfer speed when transfering files from your old hard drives. It will be faster than what you get on your 1GB network but you will not be able to saturate your network using non-ssd hard drives. That is why everyone uses a SSD cache drive and most workstatiosn have SSD. Not sure where you stand on transferring your media from your old system but do not setup up your cache drive until after you have transferred everything. Nice build.

Final Build - Last Hardware Thread I Promise!
Your setup is nearly identical with mine with a couple of exceptions. 1. I have a movies folder with all my HD movies (Media\Movies) but have a separate folder for UHD Movies not under the movies folder (Media\UHD 4K). The way you have it should be fine with Plex because you will just give it access to Regular movies. My server is not powerful enough to transcode 4K to 1080p. Many people don't do it anyways. 2. For music, I put albums and music files all under an individual artist/band. Example Media\Audio\Counting Crows. I never deviate from this. I have lots of folders but it keeps it well organized. 3. Photos are the trickiest but what you have is similar to what i do. I store photos by event and name the folder by year. Example Media\Pictures\Christmas 2019. I try to keep the folders named the same way so that if I need to sort in windows I can find what I am looking for. I don't worry much about the individual file names because I have so many pictures I just rename them separately if the need every arises. One thing you might want to consider is creating a share outside of media called Personal Videos or Private. This contains home videos I only share with the family and have it as a private share. To the best of my knowledge you can only set access rights at the share level so remember that. Remember you can always move things around or change things just remember to always do via user or the share, never directly to the disk unless you really know what you are doing.

Have you gotten the P2200 to work? Considering getting that instead of P2000 because it is cheaper from Dell than the P2000. Really curious how it compares because it appears to be a faster card.

Plex (not docker) playback stops exactly 2hr mark
First thing I would do is test it out on different clients on your network. Watch a movie in a browser or a different TV... just not XBOX. If still having the issue I would then consider setting up Plex on your Unraid server to see if you have the same issue? Even if as a test. This would eliminate it is a network connection issue causing the problem.
