  1. Looks great and can't wait to see where this goes, what advantage would this have over the xenserver route I was going to take in the new year. Bear in mind my needs are very simple I was planning to Install xenserver and have 1x unRAID VM and then have 1 VM's to handle the plugins, ie serviio, torrents, owncloud and maybe another to run SQL and any other stuff I screwing around with / learning. I think I would prefer the xenserver route as it keeps everything separate, don't like the idea of installing the above plugins/software on the unraid/arch host just in case I screw something up and can't access my data. At least if its in a VM its only a matter of delete VM and start again, knowing all the time that my unRAID VM is safe and running as Its never going to really get touched once its up and running. Will you guys still be helping us guys that want to go the xenserver route or will this be your primary focus now? Will you still complie and provide the files needed to get unRAID running on xenserver? Maybe I don't understand this enough or maybe I'm not your target audience, either way looking forward to reply and will follow with interest.
  2. Got the shares sorted out again but they throw "The parameter is incorrect" error when i try to run an exe based on the share. \\pluto\dump\random.exe - "The parameter is incorrect" error. \\192.168.1.200\dump\random.exe - Works as it should Does this work for you rhino if you substitute the server name for its ip?
  3. I updated my initial reply to a fix i found, may or may not help you. Found this, bottom post: http://superuser.com/questions/536472/windows-8-mapping-network-drive-nas Got to get to work so will try again later.
  4. I could do that just wouldn't piratical as i use my ms account for a few things and kids use my ms account to play games they mess about with on the computer. Shame there isn't another solution. Edit Found a way that doesn't throw that error, make sure the workgroup is set as it is in unraid, its case sensitive, in my case workgroup is IRPL and not irpl, the problem I have now is I cant connect with //pluto in explorer I have to connect with //192.168.1.200 also had to redo my mapped drives befor they said //pluto/TV_Shows now they say //192.168.1.200/TV_Shows Cant connect by double clicking pluto in network either now, could before, now to figure out what's causing that, ideas?

  7. Hi Grumpy, doses this mean that your going to be posting your excellent xenserver guide back up as I was aiming to follow / learn from that to install xenserver with a unRAID VM and maybe a couple of other VM's for plug-ins, 1 additional VM to start. If this is the case I'm looking forward to seeing it and cant thank you enough, quite excited lol, also if I were you I would try not to take what every moron says to heart, the unRAID community as a whole is a great place to be but there are people that just don't like change or even the hint of it. Change for the right reason is good, change for the sake of it isn't, lets not stagnate.
  8. Ddeeds I take it, welcome back if it is you, hope you say longer this time and have learnt to keep your cool. If not, thanks for the thought provoking post :-)
  9. I was hoping to see the xenserver guide come back once all this mess was sorted out and the toys were put back in the pram, all I wanted was xenserver running unRAID and one maybe two other vm's but guessing this isn't going to happen now you guys have set your sights on undermining / bastardising Toms platform. I want something headless and have no need for a desktop on a server. Wish you luck and curious to see how far this gets before another paddy / strop is had, good luck guys.
  10. Using 8.1 here also and get the same error i just copy the file to the desktop and execute from there, a pain but works. I had to mess about with the credentials vault in win8.1 to get it to connect to my sever but least it connects now lol. Be curious to see how to fix this though as never had the issues on win7.
  11. Well the 5in3 X-Case Cage turned up at the weekend and I fitted it in the top of the server, was nice and easy, only thing I had to do was bend the little tabs out of the way in the drive bays, had to do this with screwdriver as didn't have a clamp big enough. At the moment I have my dives in the cage in the following order: Parity | Disk 1 | Disk 2 | Disk 3 | Disk 4 With regard to the SATA sockets on the back of the cage I take it they run in the same order Left to Right as you looking from the front, ie the far left bay far left socket and so on? Currently running a parity check (20% through) and the drive temps are great, the 5 drives in the cage haven't exceeded 33°C, this may go up a little when santa brings the 2 remaining cages so far so good, the remaining drives in the last two CM 4in3 Modules are sitting around 33°C also so I'm happy. The stock fans don't seem any louder then the removed CM 4in3 module as I haven't noticed it and more importantly neither has the wife. I have brought some AcoustiFeet Firm Anti-Vibration Feet ACF3007-30B as I have noticed a little resonance / vibration from the severs plastic feet to the computer cupboard / cabinet it currently lives in. Computer cupboard / cabinet is basically a nice big old pine ikea wardrobe with two shelves, one acting as a desk part with monitor speakers and switch on with an ikea slide out tray attached for mouse and keyboard and another higher up for all my crap and a LED strip light attached on the underside. Wife loves it as you can shut the doors and it can all be hid away, keeps kids out also lol. Doesn't really affect temperatures that much also when shut up as have a two computer width hole cut-out of the back bottom right corner where server and main computer live. Hopping these feet stop some of the resonance / vibration. http://www.quietpc.com/acoustifeet
  12. I got my APC UPS from eBay a real bargain. One thing regarding batteries make sure you get the branded ones, singer reverb one ship with cheap clones which aren't anywhere near original spec. The UPS has my unRAID, main machine, switch and main monitor attached to it. After 5 main my main machine shuts down and 3 min later the server shuts down, all without issue and properly. 13. Been a while but sure Clonezilla allowed me to do this. It saves the image in multiple parts if memory serves. It's been a while though Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
  14. Great work Tom, will test shortly, any new on when the new GUI will be getting and update?
  15. After reading and watching there forum for a few weeks now, I beginning to agree. The easy licencing and excellent community are also what brought me to unRAID and one if the reasons I love it. I'll be sticking with unRAID as it just works great as a NAS and from what I been tracking numbers on the forum notifications could be making an appearance at some point, well there's talk. The only thing that I will be changing about my set up will be I'll be running unRAID through xenserver in new year once I get a new board and chip. One VM for unRAID and another for my plugins and services. All will be excellent then. Provided I can actually get it running low.
  16. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.M.A.R.T. Always thought those values were vendor specific, don't really mean anything to us, i may be wrong though, the 2 i listed are the important ones. Wait for someone with more experience reading the reports to chime in. though.
  17. Sorry to butt in, may I ask what's up with disk 11 as I cant figure out what's failing about it, always have trouble understanding these results. 5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct 0x0033 100 100 036 Pre-fail Always - 0 197 Current_Pending_Sector 0x0012 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 0 I'm concerned that I'm missing something on my own disks.
  18. Have you tried pulling the power to the hub / switch the server is connected to? Had similar issues a while back and resetting the hub / switch saw a return to full speed but it slow right down after a day or so. Replaced it and all is good and at full speed again. 19. I ended up getting this one, hope it will be ok, will do what you said: You could just move 2 drives from motherboard ports to the card and start a non-correcting parity check to test it. It's likely bad if you start getting errors. If it does throw errors I take it my data wont be in any danger? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=141006206664
  20. Looks like all the ones on eBay are going to take 2-3weeks to get to me, can anyone recommend another 2 port card.

  22. Looking for UK source but found this on eBay, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-PCI-E-SATA-3-0-SATA-III-Card-6Gb-s-eSata-ASM1061-/150987242415?pt=UK_Computing_ComputerComponents_InterfaceCards&hash=item23278a7baf Is this the same card?
  23. Did a quick search on ebay and got the following: http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0&_nkw=IBM+ServeRAID+M1015&_sacat=0&_from=R40 When i got mine there were loads, don't seem to be the case at the moment. 24. I'm currently looking for a cheap no frills PCIe x1 2 port SATA card that's not going to give me issues with drives of 2TB and greater, also be good if it plays with xenserver (may go down that route). There seems to be loads on eBay but unsure which to get, I read somewhere about silent data corruption so thought I better ask. An example of what I found: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fast-Speed-PCIe-2-SATA-3Gbps-2-eSATA-RAID-Card-PCI-Express-PC-Desktop-UK-SELLER-/251327651087?pt=UK_Computing_ComputerComponents_InterfaceCards&hash=item3a844b9d0f Appreciate any UK based cards / links, thanks.
