  1. Here's a thought, the drive that's running hotter IS a WD Enterprise drive and spins at 7200 I believe and it's only in there temporarily anyway. (The other ones are green drives.) It is coming back out as soon as I get my computer rebuilt. The computer will have raid inside and this drive will be a back up drive for the other four that'll be inside in raid 5.

Does that make a difference/sense/explain things?

  2. THanks, I like it a lot.

gfjardim, right now, I'm doing a search on the server so they're running between 29 and 47 degrees celcius.

I think it is very quiet and don't even notice it with my other computer sitting with the side covers off.

Does anyone want to see which drives are running hotter and where they're located?

  3. Nice!  That is one monstrous case...looks like you could get close to 20 drives if you went for all 5-in-3's.  You would probably need a bigger PSU at that point, though.

Ehem, my case is bigger (not the one you built but the one I have my current puter in).

10x5.25 external drive bays and room for another 18 drives inside the case...

Come to think of it, it will be up for sale in a couple of weeks...I'm getting things rebuilt next week    ;D

  4. One more thing, I went with a cache drive and a spare already mounted in the server. Just in case.

Damn! I keep remembering stuff to add. He also asked me about fans as he was thinking of putting other fans in

the case to keep it quiet but I told him since I planned to have it in another room, this was not an issue and to

go for more cooling but the server is very quiet!

  5. Alright, here's a plug for Rajahal and his services.

A year or so ago, I was looking into unRaid. Someone in a different forum pointed me this way as I was tired of my Infrant ReadyNAS NV+

Actually, it worked fine but the bull with them having to have drives that are on the compatibility list and at the time, none of the 2TB drives were pissed me off and of course, there is a limitation when you only have four drive slots. ANYWAY, all that aside, I loved the idea of unRaid and mix and match drives and although the price of the limetech servers didn't scare me, I always like custom stuff.

Well, don't remember how but I talked to Rajahal about it and at the time, I didn't have the money so I was just kinda asking around.

So, a few months ago I DID get the money and I again started looking here and happened to run across one of his threads about buying custom servers and I expressed interest.

Well, as it turns out, I realized I had already spoken to him so that was pretty cool. Anyway, long story short, I ordered a 15 drive server from him which I've had for a couple of weeks and I must say, I'm super happy.

First, the guy keeps you informed EVERY step of the way with frequent e mails or calls if something is happening, being delayed, going forward or whatever.

Personally, I like that a lot and especially when you're dealing with people you don't know. WHEN you do, there's nothing worse than some *ucker that has your money but you don't hear from him and now you don't know if he's out at the local tittie bar getting lap dances with your money. I've always bought a lot of stuff long distance and this has always worried me when you don't have good communication.

Not so with Rajahal, FREQUENT communication! LOVE IT!

Server was VERY well packed and I think I asked him to let the UPS store pack it in case they screw it up, they can't blame it on us. Yes, I'm doing this from experience!

He sent me emails detailing what was going on, what he was shipping, what to expect and so on. He sent instructions on which order to do things in, how to, manual, a table/list for all the drive slots and how and where to list them for future reference, pictures, animations and so on.

All in all, very detailed and very helpful and for a moron like me, this is a must!

Of course, when I unpacked the server I dropped the bag with the flash drive in it and of course, when I realized I had to have it in order for this to work and I couldn't find it, I went ape $hit but that's another story. NOT his fault  :)

So, without further ado, here are pics of my server and yes, the red looks bitc*in' and it's funny because I ordered a 100' network cable so I would be ready when the server got here and I just so happened to order it in red without thinking about it. Very cool!

Oh, and if there was any doubt, let me clarify, I AM VERY HAPPY WITH MY CUSTOM SERVER!  :)

    Highly recommended.

By the way, despite him being in Europe (prolly smoking weed in Amsterdam and getting it on with foreign hookers...JUST KIDDING!) he still had time to reply to a few questions when I ran into problems.

Problems that I caused mind you    ;D

  6. Personally, I couldn't build myself out of a paper bag so I opted to have someone else build mine and went with Rajahal here in the forum and I got a great unit, great price and great instructions.

He's away in Europe on a trip but should be home in a couple of weeks if you're interested and yes, he'll build it the way you want.

I went with the 15 drive configuration and started off with 6 drives installed. One as a spare, one as a cache and the other 6 drives available for storage. Two of them 1.5's and the rest 2tb's.

Also, the drive trays or whatever they're called had red locking thingies and it looks cool as shit!

Let me know if you want pics

  7. Ok, here's the reply from Rajahal and he's right, I had NOT set it up right when I did the share and it IS moving the stuff now.

"OK, looked at the thread.  My guess is that when you created your DATA share that you forgot to disable the cache drive for that share.  Go to the shares page and make sure that cache drive is set to NO for all shares.  Then press the MOVE NOW button and wait for it to finish."

Thanks for the help and to Rajahal from supporting it from Europe.

May he have many beers and get picked up by multiple chicks for this  :)

  8. Add another one for Acronis although I have NO idea about the ping thing. (I'm sorry, did that come out sounding dirty or was that just the way it seemed in my head? Maybe I'm thinking of a ding-a-ling and not a ping-a-ling, just like in the Chuck Berry song...)      ;D

HOWEVER, for a total moron like me, Acronis IS the way to go as it's so simple, a caveman can do it.

    I know 'cause I DID!

Also, you can run into from windows. No need to do any command line stuff and you can do much more.

    It's also fast.

Another thing about the Acronis option is that they often have specials and if you're not in a hurry, hit me up

and I'll keep an eye out for their offers they sometimes send me and pass'em on to you.

    Bitc*in' proggy!

Ghost is or at least was FINICKY compared to Acronis.

Also, IF you get acronis, again, let me know and I'll give you a couple of quick pointers I picked up from someone. Very helpful.

  9. Seems that's not the only problem. I finally decided to try to move some other stuff which worked fine but when I tried to move that same info again, I got the same error.

Regardless of that, isn't the cache drive supposed to move info around/empty itself automatically and how do I fix it?

Please, explain as if I'm a dumbass 'cause frankly, I am.

    Thanks

  10. Guys, I think I've got this figured out but since I'm not sure yet, I'll leave this up and IF I can figure it out, I'll delete it and if not, I'll remove the do not respond so for now, no need to respond...thanks

****** Ok, I think I've got it figured out ******

I have cleared the drive which took about 5-8 hours and I have formatted it and now I see it and how much space it has empty.

This means it's ready to go, right? It's #6 in the array, the FYPS one... http://www.extuff.biz/does-the-unraid-look-ok-w-new-drive.htm

Can someone tell me how much space I have left as I'm getting an error from a program that there isn't enough space to copy stuff over..

    Thanks

    George

That doesn't mean I shouldn't get help, right?

    Seriously, HEEEEEEEEEEEEELP!

Because of my previous post where I said that my file sync proggy told me there was not enough storage on the unraid, I thought I'd pop in another drive since I hadn't gotten any replies to my thread but dammit, I can't get it to work.

It's one of the WD Enterprise drives and although the unraid SEES it when it boots up, it does NOT show up on the main page or the device page.

I even took it out and put the thing on the jumpers between 7 and 8 and still nothing.

    It's the WD2002FYPS model.

Thanks for any help and for gods sake, keep it simple people. I'm dumb as hell when it comes to this stuff.     ???

  11. Neil, I agree on the bustin' it up but it would be cool.

Dylan, maybe we can sell your work. PM me and give me an idea of the labor cost, AND the material cost for building a toaster server and maybe we can do something.

I've got a bit of money left and I've always liked doing this kind of stuff.

Also, if the breadbox is for sale, give me an idea of price and specs and I'll see if I can do something to sell it  :)

Don't hold your breath but hey, it's a thought.

    George

  12. Dylan, since the Dualit toaster which is what it looks like is bigger I think than the bread box, I would do something different instead. I would kinda close of part of the toast slots and build the server inside and underneath AND stick either the top part of slices of toasted bread OR, find some fake bread they use in stores to show off appliances 'n stuff. I can help you find that. I'm good at finding shit online.

Now THAT would be cool as hell and if somehow you manage to put all the cords in something that LOOKS like a regular power cord and you plug it in to the wall, it would be even cooler  :)

  13. Guys, am I wrong or does this mean I have around 1TB of storage available and if this is the case, why am I getting a message from ViceVersa Pro (which I use for moving and syncing info) that says there's not enough storage available?

    http://www.extuff.biz/images/unraig-free-storage-june-19-2010.htm

Also, is there a way to do like you do in windows explorer? Right click on the DRIVE, chose properties and it tells you how much is left?

    Thanks

    George

  14. Man, that is like...super bitc*in'

    I LOVE IT!

For your next project, how about putting it in a toaster and putting it next to the bread box?

    This is f'in' cool

    Helluva job
