  1. I thought slot 1 & 2 were only 100 MHz? So by changing it to 133 MHz, did it make a difference from 100 MHz?
  2. Does this sound reasonable? The Delta AFC1212DE-PWM 4-pin fan sells in the upper $20. However the Dell version are less expensive, refurbished and new. My guess is that Dell added the 5-pin and probably switched the wires/pin around to be proprietary, but the fan itself is still standard. So I took one of the stocked fans from the Norco with the 4-pin molex (but only 3-wire) and using a hair bobby pin, I popped out the wires from the molex KK housing with no problem. So I am thinking buying the Dell version of the Delta AFC1212DE-PWM and doing the same thing, but replacing the 5-pin housing with the 4-pin housing. I just need to for someone like starcat to verify the wire/pin alignment.
  3. Much quieter than a 1U rackmount server. They start at full speed and then slowdown to about 1000 RPMs. Their max is 3900 RPM, so you get the picture. But I may measure the db's from 1m and send you some numbers if you want. That would be great, I would really appreciate it. The only reason I am undecided about this fan is I do not have the minimum noise rating as compared to the 120mm Sanyo Denki (33 dBA @ 1500rpm). I take it the wires are long enough to reach the X7SBE fan header 1-3?
  4. Hey starcat, how loud are the Delta PWM fans when the X7SBE has it on low?
  5. I have decided to completely replace all the stocked fans in the Norco 4224 so that I can utilize my SuperMicro X7SBE PWM feature. My goal is to select the appropriate fans that will run quiet when the server is running cool, but have the power to crank it up when the server is running hot (parity check). I have decided to use 3x 120mm fans for the middle fan plate, but I need help on selecting the appropriate fans. For the 2 exhaust fans, I need help on selecting between the 25mm or 38mm thick 80mm fans. I have two scenarios as to how I want to proceed, retail or custom. With retail, I would buy what is available and just plug in the fans. With custom, I would need to terminate the fans myself, which would require more parts and a crimping tool. Scenario 1 - Retail 3 Middle Fans: Delta AFC1212DE-PWM 120mmX38mm PWM 148.34 CFM 3900 RPM 2 Exhaust Fans: Nexus PWM Series SP802512H-03PWM 80mmX25mm Comments:Will the two Nexus fans provide adequate exhaust? Will the Delta fans run quiet at low PWM duty? Scenario 2 - Custom 3 Middle Fans: Sanyo Denki San Ace 9GV1212P1J011 120mmX38mm PWM 2 Exhaust Fans: Sanyo Denki San Ace 9GV0812P4J031 80mmX25mm PWM or 2 Exhaust Fans: Sanyo Denki San Ace 9GA0812P1H611 80mmX38mm PWM Comments:I am quite impressed by the Sanyo Denki in my Seasonic X650 PSU (can't hear it). I am installing the Seasonic X750 in this Unraid server. Is the 80mmX25mm exhaust fan sufficient or should I go with 80mmX38mm fan? Since I am unsure of the X7SBE fan header power ratings, I would use a PWM splitter to supply power to the 120mm fans to ensure that they get all the amp they would require. Do I even need to do this since the X7SBE have plenty of PWM fan headers? It is just that the 120mm Sanyo Denki goes up to 3Amp each! Please advise since I would really like to complete this build soon. Sourcing the Sanyo Denki fans would be tricky, but hopefully the Arrow can provide the parts. I may be over designing, but I built a full tower ripping station from an old chassis with poor ventilation and is continually tweaking it to bring the internal hard drives temps down. I just do not want to touch my Unraid server again once I close it up and set it into the mechanical room unless there is a HW failure.
  6. Just unboxed the Norco 4224 and started my first PC build ever. I managed to install the PSU, motherboard, and CPU. My next step was to install the CPU heatsink and fan only to find out that Intel did not include a few drops of thermal grease with the E6500! Now I will have to wait until I buy some thermal grease. First impression of the Norco 4224: 01. Much better quality than I had perceived as far as the chassis goes. 02. Molex power cable (2-pin) for the 80mm mid-plane is useless since I plan on using the motherboard fan headers. 03. The 4X 80mm fans for the mid-plane are useless since their cables are too short to reach the motherboard headers. 04. The 2X 80mm exhaust fans are useless since the connectors are regular molex instead of KK molex and cannot be connected to the motherboard fan headers. 05. One set of pins on the fan plate power strip are totally crushed. The 4X 80mm fans and case hardware box were loosely packed in the case during shipping which may have crushed the pins. 06. There is no reset button as stated in the specifications. Since the 80mm fans are useless and I plan on using 120mm fans, I will not be able to complete the build until the 120mm fan wall bracket becomes available Is it advisable to run the preclear process on 12 drives without fans and the top off? I could put a powerful house fan in front of the case or I can just leave the disks out in the open too (connected to the motherboard SATA ports). Installing the CPU was nerve wreaking. I hoped I had it aligned correctly when I locked it in. Well no way to find out until I get the thermal grease to install the heat sink.
  7. Rajahal, how many drives do you have in your Norco 4220 and what are your average and parity check drive temps?
  8. I beleive starcat is using the Delta AFC1212DE-PWM (120x38mm) fans in the middle fan plate. So I assume that the 38mm thickness is not an issue in the Norcor 4224? Secondly, I believe the fan is listed here for a good price, but the specification list it has having the Dell 5-pin connector. If this is the same fan, could I snip off the extra pin slot?
  9. How is the full speed noise compared to a furnace blower? I might relegate the location from my HT closet to my mechanical room. What fans are other Norco owners using to lower the noise? I read on AVS that user odditory is using 4x 80mm MASSCOOL fans for his 20 x Hitachi 2Tb 7200RPM drives.
  10. Unfortunately, I have already purchased the SuperMicro X7SBE a few months ago. I will need to make do with the BIOS controlling the fans. Is the Delta AFC1212DE quiet? Or are the 120mm PWM quiet fans by Arctic Cooling, Scythe, Noctua, Nexus, Cooler Master, and MASSCOOL too weak to support 20 drives during parity check?
  11. Well my server build will continue shortly. Just placed the order for the Norco RPC-4224. I just could not hold out for it to go on sale since I am getting pretty tight on storage. Wish me luck on my build. I still have not decided what to do about the fans to reduce noise. I will definitely order the 120mm fan plate. But the first ithing is to get the server built, all the disks pre-cleared, and migrate over my data.
  12. I am a little confuse about executing this tool to setup SIM1U+. Do you mean boot up Unraid and then logon via telnet?
  13. Will this work for the SuperMicro X7SBE?
  14. I think I will stick with the Norco 4224 with the 120mm fan plate. The SuperMicro X7SBE fan headers are 4-pin for PWM fans. The manual states that you cannot mix 3-pin and 4-pin fans. Does this include the CPU fan? I have the E6500, but haven't looked to see if it came with a fan yet. Also is there a consensus on which 120mm and 80mm PWM fans to use for silence and cooling? Is there a way other than the motherboard BIOS, to control these PWM fans based on SMART temperature? I believe the motherboard BIOS control the fans based on CPU load, which may not be optimal for an Unraid server.
  15. Can someone recommend an alternative to the Norco 4224 without price consideration? I am considering going with a better build quality rather than waiting for Norco to get it right. Any suggestions? Here are some criteria: 01. 20-24 drive bays. 02. Does not include power supplies (I already have a Seasonic Gold 750). 03. Good but quiet airflow or the ability to easily swap out fans. 04. Excellent build quality. I know Supermicro make server cases, but I can't seem to find the right one without having to buy their power supplies too.

Jomp, did your 4224 comes with the 120mm middle fan plate?

Better yet, give an option to purchase without fans, middle and rear, at a lower price. Keep in mind that the majority of your customers are probably small business or home enthusiasts. So noise is really a BIG factor. I would really love to order the 4224 if there is a guarantee that I will get the 120mm fan plate for free when it is available.

    Norco 4224 Thread

I read on a couple of forums that the middle fans are back to 80mm instead of 120mm. Even the Norco 4224 specs has been changed to reflect this change. Check out these links: RPC-4224 at IPC Direct Norco Technologies
  19. Hmm.. this fact I did not realized. I had always assumed when people posted their drive throughput in the range of 80-100 MB/s, it was because of the network limitation. Is this the mechanic limitations of the drives? One more day until the official shipping of the Norco 4224. Of course I will not be the first beta users. I will wait until the dust has cleared and the prices are discounted.
  20. I just built a machine from old parts and practicing to build my Unraid server when the Norco 4224 is available. I am using a cheap PCI-X Sil3124 SATA II 4-Port controller in a PCI 2.2 64-bit 66 MHz slot with Windows XP. The card supports PCI 32-bit at 66 MHz or PCI-X at 133 MHz. All my drives are showing up as UMDA mode 6. Is this correct? I believe UDMA Mode 6 is only 133 MB/s, not nearly the 3 Gbps ov SATA II. Does this means the controller card is only running at 32-bit 33 MHz eventhough the slot is set to 66 MHz? What should the transfer mode be in Windows for SATA II drives? Thanks.
  21. I tried running the "Windows" version with the drives in an external docking station via a PCMIA SATA Controller and a USB docking station. It was a no go. The "Windows" version is only a window apps to display the warnings and disclosures, then it reboots the computer into what looks like a DOS environment to actually perform the update. Hence it never load the necessary drivers to access external devices. I even tried connecting the HD docking station to a SYBA Silicon 3124 4 port SATA Controller (2 eSata + 2 internal). The "Windows" flasher identified all of the Seagates as non-Seagate drives. I will try again with the bootable CD.
  22. That is exactly what I was thinking. The main question is if the discount is greater and by how much to the price of the 120mm fan mid-plane plus 3x 120mm fans.
  23. Looks like my piecemeal server build has been dormant for too long. Just saw that the Norco RPC-4224 is now available for pre-ordering with an anticipated shipping date of August 2010. Hmm...should I be a little more patience for some promotional pricing? Look like I have to brush up on the Unraid documentation again.
  24. Upon further research, this is a software RAID controller (Adaptec HostRAID) and there is no non-RAID driver available (unless Windows XP Pro uses a generic SATA driver that works). Accordingly to Adaptec, the HostRAID is enabled and so the controller either supports an array or a volume (JBOD?). Doesn't sound like I will be able to use this controller. My SuperMicro P3TDLR motherboard has no SATA ports, but does have 32/64 bit 33/66MHz slots. I am trying to configure it for the fastest hard drive throughput I can. Anyone knows of a 64-bit 66MHz PCI SATA controller? Can a PCI-X controller be plugged into a PCI 64-bit slot and work?
  25. I was thinking of using the Adaptec 1420SA raid controller just to provide more SATA ports in an older PC. The manual does not mention anything about disabling the RAID functionality, but I figured if I don't create an array in the controller's BIOS, then it should just act as a SATA controller. Am I correct? I have never owned a RAID controller before, but can you actually use one just as a SATA controller?
