  1. I am making my final update to this thread because I finally solved this problem. The solution was to return my Asmedia SATA Controller card back to Amazon and get the one shown in the link below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UlVk1Bwkh-Q&t=3s Boxed in YELLOW below are my optical drives shown in the System Devices page in the UnRaid OS. I was not getting the results shown below with the Asmedia card. But this new MZHOU PCIe SATA Card recognizes my cd/dvd optical drives. And I am sure once I setup my Linux Mint VM these optical drives will appear on my Linux Mint desktop. So my advice is you don't waste your time buying an Asmedia card and instead get the MZHOU PCIe SATA Card I got if you need support for optical drives.
  2. Thank you for the posts. I did an eyeball comparison between the 6.83 CONFIG folder and the 6.9.1 CONFIG folder and they are definitely different. I also compared a bunch of files in other folders outside of the CONFIG folder and found too many file size differences between the files shown in the screen capture below: In short, I elected to delete 6.9.1 from the USB stick and crossed over all the files I had originally zipped as a 6.8.3 version backup out of a concern that just crossing over the CONFIG folder was going to cause me some headaches. So I am back to using my buggy original 6.8.3 version. It would be great if the UnRaid OS gave one the ability to take snapshots of the entire OS so that when a NEWBIE breaks something in the OS he can restore a previous snapshot that was working correctly.
  3. Thank you to all for your postings. Itimpi, just to confirm. You are saying if I copy across the files listed below from my the old 6.8.3 backup I made over to my new 6.9.1 USB Flash Drive my old ROOT password should come back to life and work as before. Correct? config/passwd config/shadow config/smbpasswd Constructor, to answer your question. I had a terrible time configuring my VM to work with CD/DVD optical drives connected to Asmedia SATA Controller cards. I installed and removed Windows10 and Linux Mint VM attempts at least 10 different times. In short, I noticed my UnRaid OS got buggy after all of the experimentation I performed. So I thought it would be best to wipe the slate clean and start all over with a clean 6.9.1 UnRaid OS installation. I honestly thought (as a newbie) all of the Password information was kept in the UnRaid Array and not in the USB Flash drive. I hope I will be able to fix this problem because currently I am locked out of my own data. Lastly, I will try tonight to clear out the cache for my FireFox browser in the window shown below: Thank you to all for your help.
  4. BUMP - Please can somebody in the community help me solve this problem. Thank you.
  5. Hi All, I'm a newbie with Unraid and need some help. I recently updated to 6.9.1 from 6.8.3. I wiped the USB Flash drive and installed 6.9.1 on to it. Now I get the error below when I try to login: Warning: file(/etc/nginx/htpasswd): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /usr/local/emhttp/login.php on line 23 Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /usr/local/emhttp/login.php on line 23 The list below are possible fixes I have identified through some research on my own: Reboot the UnRaid server in Safe Mode = Did not fix the problem. The manual says to delete these files: config/passwd config/shadow config/smbpasswd 3. However, a post in the UnRaid forum says to reset password only delete: config/shadow config/smbpasswd What is the correct fix? Also, I made a backup of my 6.8.3 UnRaid OS before I wiped the USB Flash Drive. What files can I copy from the 6.8.3 backup and paste into the 6.9.1 USB to fix this Password problem? I hope someone in the community can answer my questions because I am currently locked out of my UnRaid server. Thank you for your time.
  6. BUMP --- Can anybody in the community using an UnRaid server with an internal CD/DVD optical drive installed please share configuration details. I am still not able to make my setup work and it would be helpful to me if somebody already setup with an internal CD/DVD optical drive could share what hardware is being using and how the passthrough configuration was done. Thank you.
  7. I got the following update. I updated my UnRaid OS 6.8.3 to 6.9.1 in the hopes the latest and greatest UnRaid OS version would fix my problem. Unfortunately, the problem persists. Nevertheless, new to 6.9.1 is the "View VFIO-PCI LOG" button and after clicking on it I see log shown in the screen capture below. I do not see any RED color which is good news. However, the YELLOW appears 4 separate times in the log which happens to be the quantity of optical drives I have. How can I confirm if the warnings below relate to my missing optical drives connected to my Asmedia cards? Warning: You did not supply a PCK domain, assuming 0000:00:1d.0 Warning: You did not specify a Vendor: Device (vvvv:dddd), unable to validate I hope a 6.9.1 UnRaid OS user in the community can share their knowledge to help me figure out how I can fix this problem relating to my Asmedia cards not correctly supporting my optical drives within my Linux Mint VM. Thank you for your time.
  8. Thank you for your posts. SimonF, I used your lsbik and lsscsi Linux commands on my Linux Mint VM Terminal and I got the results shown below: "lsblk" Terminal Output Below: slipstream@mintvm:~$ lsblk NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT sda 8:0 1 14.5G 0 disk └─sda1 8:1 1 14.5G 0 part /media/slipstreamvm/USB STICK sr0 11:0 1 1.9G 0 rom /media/slipstreamvm/Linux Mint 20.1 Cinnamon 64-bit vda 252:0 0 25G 0 disk ├─vda1 252:1 0 512M 0 part /boot/efi └─vda2 252:2 0 24.5G 0 part / slipstream@mintvm:~$ "lsscsi" Terminal Output Below: slipstream@mintvm:~$ lsscsi [0:0:0:0] cd/dvd QEMU QEMU DVD-ROM 2.5+ /dev/sr0 [10:0:0:0] disk SanDisk Cruzer Glide 3.0 1.00 /dev/sda slipstream@mintvm:~$ I believe the "lsscsi" result explains it in the most simple terms. It is not generating the same result you got shown in the text below you posted: [5:0:0:0] cd/dvd ASUS BW-16D1HT 3.01 /dev/sr0 I was expecting to see this same text you shared because I happen to be using he same Asus BW-16D1HT optical drive you are using. So I was dissappointed to see the "lsscsi" command did not recognize my Asus BW-16D1HT optical drive. At least I can rule out that my Asus BW-16D1HT optical drive is not at fault because it seems to be working for you although I don't know if you have it connected to the same Asmedia Card I am using. Can anybody in the community please clarify why my Asmedia card passthrough appears in my Linux Mint Create VM dialog window (shown in the very first graphic at the top circled in YELLOW) but does not appear in the terminal output I get after using the "lsscsi" command ? I purchased my Asmedia cards from StarTech in the link below after reading in an UnRaid post they are the right ones to buy: https://www.startech.com/en-us/cards-adapters/pexesat322i Additionally, StarTech in their website say in clear English these Asmedia cards offer what is worded below on the website: "Support for SATA-based optical drives (CD/DVD/BD)" So I disagree with Vr2lo these cards might be incompatible because they seem to be working for other UnRaid users in the community. My next move is to investigate the BIOS for my SuperMicro X10SRH-CF motherboard. I'm thinking I may have to upgrade the BIOS in the motherboard to a more current version. Does anybody else in the community have any opinion as to why my Asmedia card shows it has passed through but the optical drives connected to it do not appear in my Linux Mint VM? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.
  9. SimonF, Thanks for your help and sharing those two Linux Terminal Commands which I didn't know existed. Neverthless, I entered both Linux Commands into the Terminal for my Linux Mint VM (please see extracted code below). And below is a screen capture of my Disks dialog window for my Linux Mint VM: According to what I see from the "lspci" command Terminal output I see that my Linux Mint VM recognizes the two Asmedia SATA Controller PCI cards. However, it does not see my CD/DVD optical drives connected to them. Evenmore, what does not make sense to me is the DISKS window screen capture shown above. The left side of the DISKS window is missing Icons for the CD/DVD optical drives even after I insert a DVD in one of the trays. In short, I think this DISKS window screenshot contradicts the result the " lspci" command shows above. Additionally, according to what I see from the "lspci -x" command Terminal output I also do not see CD/DVD optical drives connected to the two Asmedia SATA Controller PCI cards. Also I am using 6.8.3. So does that mean I still need to have vfio plugin installed? The reason I installed it is because the SpaceInvaderOne YouTube video mentions I needed to install it. Below for your convenience SimonF I have extracted the Asmedia specific code so you don't have to scan through the many lines of code shown above. Do you see anything strange in any of the two Terminal outputs shown below relating to my Asmedia card setup? Extracted "lspci" Terminal Output Below: 0b:00.0 SATA controller: ASMedia Technology Inc. I thought by installing the "Unassigned Devices" app my UnRaidOS would recognize my CD/DVD Optical Drives but I learned after installing it the "Unassigned Devices" app does not support CD/DVD Optical Drives. I am new to UnRaid. Basically, here is my opinion. The UnRaid OS developers need to make this entire process of setting up a Linux Mint VM or Windows10 VM a lot more user friendly. I am overwelmed with all of the complexity associated to completing the task of setting up a VM. I hope in the future it becomes a more user friendly process. Lastly, I hope somebody in the community can point out to me what I need to fix so I can get my two Asmedia SATA Controller Cards to recognize my CD/DVD Optical drives. Thank you for your time.
  10. Hi Jonp, Do you have any information on how to passthrough an Asmedia SATA Controller PCI card with two CD/DVD Optical Drives connected to it? I successfully see the Asmedia devices on my Linux Mint VM profile but the optical drives remain invisible to my Linux Mint OS. Any tips you may have will be welcomed a lot.
  11. BUMP --- Can anybody in the community please share some experience on what needs to be done so my Asmedia SATA Controller PCI cards work correctly by supporting the connected optical drives. Thank you.
  12. Hi All, Circled in YELLOW in the graphic below is my PASSTHROUGH for the two Asmedia SATA Controller PCI cards for a total of four SATA ports. I have two Optical Drives connected to each card for a total of four Optical Drives. Here is the problem. None of my Optical Drives appear on my Linux Mint VM desktop. To troubleshoot, I used the Terminal command shown below to confirm if the Linux Mint OS recognizes the optical drives and the Terminal tells me it does not. sudo lshw -C disk The passthrough method I used was something called Stubbing. Which involves appending the "syslinux.cfg" code located in the Flash drive with the Asmedia "1b21:0612" ID number shown below: label unRAID OS menu default kernel /bzimage append vfio-pci.ids=1b21:0612 initrd=/bzroot I also installed the VFIO-PCI Config app since I am not using version 6.9.1: Lastly, I also tried the "Downstream" setting for the "PCIe ACS override" parameter shown below: In short, can somebody in the community please share with me any advise that will help in making my 4 optical drives work correctly with my two Asmedia SATA Controller PCI cards? Is it necessary I install Asmedia drivers to my Linux Mint VM? Can the problem be I did not correctly Passthrough the Admedia cards? Shouldn't Optical Drives connected to Asmedia cards work without a problem? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.
  13. Thank you SimonF. I changed it to what you suggested and it works. The reason I used SeaBios is because SpaceInvaderOne in his YouTube video says to change it to SeaBios.
  14. I changed my Graphic Card parameter from Nvidia to VNC and now I successfully get a "VNC Remote" command. However below is what I now see in the VNC Remote screen. Does anybody in the community have any advice as to how the problem below can be fixed?
  15. Hi All, I am attempting to setup an Ubuntu VM with no success. After I hit the CREATE button my Ubuntu OS installation process does not appear within a browser window. Also when I click on the Ubuntu icon what I see missing is the Remote View command as shown in screen capture below. The second screen capture below shows all of the settings I used for my Ubuntu setup. Can anybody in the community please help me in identifying what could possibly be the problem that is preventing my Ubuntu OS installation process from launching. Thank you for your time. 16. Thanks Jonathanm. I did notice the disk list shown in the screen capture below. However, I was not 100% certain if those were the same disks mentioned in the "Remove VM & Disks" menu command. Since my goal is to do a 100% removalble of the Windows10 VM, it looks like using the "Remove VM & Disks" command is the correct choice. Thanks for the help.
  17. Thank you for your post tjb_altf4. The problem was I was clicking on the "Windows 10" text hyperlink and not on the Windows logo itself. Nevertheless, the option which reads, "Remove VM & Disks" has me confused. Can anybody in the community clarify what disks are the ones meant to be deleted if I use this menu selection? I do not want to delete any disks from my UnRaid Array, therefore I would like to make sure which disk will be deleted if I select the "Remove VM & Disks" option. Thank you for your time.
  18. Hi All, What is the correct way to entirely remove a Windows10 VM from my UnRaid OS? I am going to install a Linux Mint VM instead because it requires no product key. I have looked all over the GUI below and there is no button that says "Remove VM". Any help will be greatly appreciated.
  19. SimonF and Jonathanm, Thank you for your postings. In my opinion the UnRaid OS developers need to seriously work on making Win10 VM Optical Drive support a lot easier process to implement. I say this because I found the link below which covers at least 5 different approches to test out: https://forums.unraid.net/topic/62070-pass-through-a-host-dvd-drive/ So from what I gather there is no official solution to support Optical Drives within an UnRaid Win10 VM. And this just leaves me scratching my head. Something as critical as Win10 VM Optical Drive support should work straight out of the box without needing to waste a lot of time experimenting what works and what does not work. My hope was the Unassigned Devices plugin was going to work without a problem but this also turned out to be a big waste of time. For right now I am going to try something Germanus4711 I says he had some success with after inserting the code below into the <disk> section: <disk type='block' device='cdrom'> <driver name='qemu' type='raw'/> <source dev='/dev/sr0'/> <target dev='hdg' bus='sata'/> <readonly/> </disk> Given that lsscsi reveals: [4:0:0:0] cd/dvd TSSTcorp DVDWBD SH-B123L SB04 /dev/sr0 If this doesn't work I am going to try what Jonathanm suggests which is to buy a PCI SATA conroller card. In closing I have the following message to SpaceInvader One. Please update your 3 part Windows VM YouTube series so it includes information on how to configure an UnRaid Win10 VM so it supports Optical Drives. Thank you
  20. Hi All, I have a followup I hope someone in the community can address. I reviewed the SpaceInvader One YouTube video in the link below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=miYUGWq6l24 In his YouTube video he does not provide any help associated to configuring an optical drive. so a Windows10 VM recognizes it. Therefore, my question is as follows. Is it possible for my UnRaid Windows10 VM to support my optical drive? If yes, how is it configured so my Windows10 VM has the capabiliity to read the data from a DVD disk and write it to my MOVIE share? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.
  21. Hi All, I setup my Win10 VM for the purpose of using 2 internal Optical Drives I have installed in my tower case. I thought after installing all the missing drivers from the virtio-win-0.1.1 CD drive my 2 internal Optical Drives will appear in my "This PC" window under the "Devices and Drives" section. Nevertheless, as the JPG below shows my 2 internal Optical Drives are missing. I have checked the "DVD/CD-ROM drives" node on my Device Manager tree and those drivers shown below circled in RED do not look like they belong to my 2 ASUS BW-16D1HT 16x BLU-RAY Optical Drives. I will greatly appreciate it if anybody in the community can clarify for me why my 2 optical drives seem to be invisible to my Win10 VM? Is the correct approach to fix this problem require I import genuine ASUS Optical Drive drivers into my Win10 VM and install them since they seem to be missing from the virtio-win-0.1.1 CD drive? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
  22. Hoopster, Thank you for your post. It helped me a lot. After taking a close look at the Device Manager tree I noticed it was showing some missing drivers in the "OTHER DEVICES" node on the tree as shown in the JPG below. As you advised I just did an "Update Driver" selection and then I pointed to the "virtio-win-0.1.1" CD Drive and it automatically installed the missing drivers. I have to say that setting up a VM for the first time is a great learning experience. Again thanks for your help.
  23. Hi All, I encountered a problem SpaceInvader One does not cover in his Windows 10 VM setup YouTube video. In short, I have no Network connection capability in my Win10 VM. And when I was setting it up I had no way of adding Network capability to my Win10 installation. All I saw was the JPG shown below. The only option I had to choose was the "Skip For Now" option. So I skipped it and finished my Win10 installation. In short, now that I have my Win10 VM setup how do I go back and install network connectivity? I cannot do it from within my Win10 OS network settings window so where do I go to to add my Win10 VM network connectivity? How do I add the special VM drivers to activate Network connectivity? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
  24. Thanks Hoopster. The JPG below I think relates to what you mention about installing drivers. I am choosing the W10 driver. This is my first VM I have ever installed so I am really moving forward very slowly because I don't want my VM to be installed incorrectly. Thank fo the help.
  25. Hi All, I encountered another problem I hope somebody can clarify. It relates to how Windows Setup cannot find a drive to install the OS to. The JPG below shows the drives my VM is assigned to. Any help on what is the best way I can move forward with my Win10 OS install will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.
