  1. So I have a few "temp" directories on the main cache drive that I use for storing stuff I don't need protected. I thought that anything here would just stay unless it had a user share somewhere but last night the mover moved everything from the cache to the other disks. Did I so something wrong, is there a way to have a directory on the cache drive and not have it moved?
  2. Perfect. It doesn't use the cache drive which is good too.
  3. Either I'm usually logged in when I move stuff or I have scripts that do it so is there a way I can just run mv something.zip /Backup/ and it will use the same rules as user-shares to decide on where to put it?
  4. How are the dirs created? Could it be checking the timestamp of the file would prevent this issue? Scan through, if it's older than x hours/days and it's empty delete it?
  5. Add this to a cronjob. find -depth -type d -empty -exec rmdir {} \;
  6. Is this an unraid thing? Check out the files with the odd names, all of those have colens. On disk(telnet) they look fine.
  7. I'm just eager to get this setup, does it usually take 24-48 hours to get the license key? I would think this could easily be an automated process...no?
  8. You might also want to consider a different case for future expansion. As it sits your max HD's would be six which sounds like a lot but with one being parity, another cache that leaves only four(max) drives for storage. Just something to think about, if you like the media style case go for it but make sure you're not going to be upset in 9 months when you're out of bays. :-)
  9. Check out my thread a few below yours(http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=4250.0) which some people gave some good advice. Not sure if it matters but you should try and do dual-channel ram so instead of 1x2GB to 2x1GB or better yet just get the pair of 2x2GB. I was going to go with the single core but I decided on the dual so it has room to run other stuff and I'm glad I did now. Oh, and another thing(unrelated). If you're upgrading the license order it before you get the hardware(it takes a couple days) so you're not sitting there [like me] with everything running waiting for the license key to come in.
  10. Ah, wow, a lot of good stuff. I guess I will load up the beta then. I was looking for a 4.5 section in the main forum, maybe there should be a beta section?
  11. I'm going to buy the pro license and I want to make sure I get all of the features i've been reading about so what version should I setup. It's a new setup so I figure now is the time to set everything up before I have data in case I do something wrong. Is there anything in 4.5 that is not in 4.4?
  12. Ah, that makes estimates easier. So my base idle system use 119..if I take out the graphics card it uses 93. I guess I should remove the geForce 8800 from an unRaid box. :-)
  13. Just a heads up if anyone is getting kernel panics. There are dram settings that are enabled, I disabled these and it worked fine but I didn't notice my ram went form 4GB to 2GB so they seem to affect that. Once the system is up and running I will probably try and turn these back on to see what happens.
  14. Ah, I have one of those kill-a-watt things. ;-) My desktop currently says 121watts idle, is this really high? What's the best way to calculate out how much this cost for a year? I want to find out if it's worth using my old desktop vs buying new low power stuff. What's the "break even point"?
  15. I noticed some people list their power usage but how are you figuring that out? Is there a way to do it from the components or are you hooking it up to something?
  16. So if that's the case I should just get the 5400 ones, they're $10 cheaper.
  17. So, will the new PCH work better? http://www.popcornhour.com/onlinestore/index.php?pluginoption=productspec&item_id=12 My plan was to get the unRAID setup and get the new PCH but I found this thread. That's still my plan but I would prefer no skipping. ;-)
  18. If you get the Seagate LP (Low Power) they will be fairly close to the WD Greens in power consumption. And yes, you are correct that if you get 4 of the 1.5TB drive you will have 4.5TB's of parity protected storage. With unRaid would I see a different with the 5400?
  19. The reason I'm doing the 2TB is because they were green and 2 drives is less power than 3(or so I think). How much extra power do the 1.5s draw over the "green" ones? Is the power that much more on three drives over two? If I add ~80 to the total I can get four 1.5TB and have 4.5TB of usable space with the parity drive right?
  20. Oh, and I have a Sony Micro Vault Tiny 2 GB USB Flash Drive (USM2GH/T2) usb stick to run unraid off.
  21. Thanks! I took some of the advice and made some adjustments to cut down on cost and power usage. How's this looking now?
  22. This is what I've come up with. I want it to powerful enough to do unraid and I'm going to use it for other house management stuff so I might have a light web server and ssh running. I'm trying to go for the lowest power for the biggest bang(both in cost and power).
