  3. Has anyone found an update to this? I mean, there are plenty of places where people mention this as an issue. For me, it first happened when I tried to shutdown the server. VM tab hangs. Rebooted a couple of times (after hard reset) and it magically worked. So I decide to take server down. I have tried: - Goto VM tab, click, STOP - VM tab hangs Hard reboot a couple of times (Cause 1 reboot usually doesn't fix it) - Remote into VM and shutdown from there ... works 90% of the time. Except today it hangs. I've gone into settings and disable VMs and tab disappears. Re-enable - and tab hangs. BTW - Settings - VM Manager -- Disable VM Server - takes the tab away but the VM is still running (I can remote into it) Sometimes Libvirt fails to start. A couple of reboots and it'll magically start working again. But I shouldn't have to restart a bunch of times. So what logs or diagnostics do we need to get at this? Right now I'm running a Parity rebuild (added second drive). 30 hrs until its available.   4. Three things. First, THANK YOU! I realized this weekend I'm deep down the rabbit hole and was risking a LOT of lost time due potential cache drive failure and loss of appdata. Put a second one in the machine and taken care of. THEN found this app and have begun the process of figuring everything out. Second, I'd like to echo @acook who requested that Dockers only be turn off, in turn, as they are backed up. I'm not sure how painful that would be to implement, but it would certainly help reduce downtime on the end of the user. Third, and somewhat related... any chance of having a progress bar or percentage report for backup and verification (and restore?). I jumped in, not realized I had 295GB of /appdata and the world came to a screeching halt (and screeching from my family). I had no idea the timing! Took about 1h20m to backup (which I could monitor by size of tar file compared to appdata folder). Now I'm at 2h10m and still "verifying" the backup. NOTE: I _may_ or _may not_ be experiencing a data rebuild simultaneous to this evolution! But a progress indicator and/or estimate would still be very helpful!

  6. @Vr2Io , et. al. Took me a bit of time due to personal schedule, but things are humming along nicely! Really wanted to say thank you on the 12900k vs 13900k power discussion. I did end up opting for the 13900k for a couple of reasons, power usage being one of them. While I've not attached my Kill-a-Watt specifically to the server (upcoming project), I have been monitoring the usage according to the UPS. Perhaps not the most accurate, but it's been interesting. I'm running the cable modem and wireless router and server through it. Normally averages 70-75 watts. Running parity check (14,8,8,8) with torrents in the background and even a plex stream or two barely breaks three digits with the highest semi-consistent I've seen being 117W (Even I thought that suspicious so I just spun up for a parity check to confirm). Needless to say ... I'm a very happy camper / Unraider! Thanks to everyone for the feedback and help. I got a minecraft server running and few more services my older one choked on. Next up is VM with GPU passthrough. Fun times! Take care, Kermit
  7. @Vr2Io, are you the only one who loves me? 🙂 (thank you for engaging!) Yes, I mean parity check speed. Literally cut in half with the above changes. I just logged in to check status of the thread, but first thing this morning, I put the new 8tb disk3 (old parity) on the "other side" of the HBA to rebalance it at 3/2 and parity check speeds are consistently at 190MB/s (which is normal until it gets past that remaining 4TB disk4). I suspect that it will then increase to the 210+ range. So while I understand "how disks are connected to the LSI HBA ports" shouldn't matter - it appears that it actually might in this circumstance? Again, I'm simply reporting realtime. Speeds might tank later into the parity check. Regardless, I'll follow up. And I thank you for your continued engagement! EDIT: Okay, it's at 3.75GB on parity check (still hitting that 4GB) and down to 100MB/s. Ugh. Temps are running 46 but that's shouldn't be an issue. I paused check to let the cool down and resuming put it at same slow speed. Will update soon. EDIT2: So once it made it past the 4TB drives, the speed is still around 140-150 MB/s, which is a 25% reduction in speed. Really odd but I'll set up the new server soon and troubleshoot from there.
  8. Howdy all! I had: 8tb Parity 8tb Disk1 8tb Disk2 4tb Disk3 4tb Disk4 All running on same LSI SAS2308. EDIT: Balanced at 3/2 for the two SAS-to-SATA splitter ports. Speed: 205MB/s+ Upgraded Parity and moved to data: 14tb Parity 8tb Disk1 8tb Disk2 8tb Disk3 (old parity drive) 4tb Disk4 Now, I did put the Parity is in a new slot, but still on same HBA, I think. EDIT: Now split at 4/1 for the two ports. New Speed: 110MB/s consistently. Attaching diag if anyone can help or has any ideas. Mobo is an MSI K9A2 Platinum with SataII 3Gbps. The LSI SAS2308 is a SataIII 6Gbps. The reason I'm confused - both configs have 5 drives on the HBA - so why a drastic speed difference? Appreciate any help in diagnosing. I'll have physical access tomorrow - so what would you move/check first? Cable? EDIT: Okay, asked family member to get some close up pics of cabling. The two 4TB drives are on cables 1&4 of the HBA controller (single side) the other disks (14,8,8,8) are ALL on cable 5-8. So the shift is instead of a 3/2 balance, it's now 4/1 for the two ports on the HBA. Could this really account for a near 50% drop in speed? that's going to be the first think I adjust. Only SMART issue I see with 8TB moved from Parity to Disk3 is "199 UDMA CRC error count 021" but that hasn't come back since clearing yesterday and I've been running parity for 12hrs. Thanks!   10. You can change the Docker config so that /storage points to simply /mnt (vice /mnt/user/) and each disk will show up as a Directory to open. However, you won't see "/mnt/user" (not sure why). Hope this will help folks. KJ

  12. Okay, so maybe I've had a bit of confusion on the bifurcation issue. The LGA1700 socketed boards allegedly have x8/x8 bifurcation for the x16 slots. That means that I could have 4 cards in the two gen5 slots and possibly 2 in the gen4 slot? Am I correct on this? Assuming the onboard SATA are enough for now, I don't need an HBA. I have a couple of nvme accessible for VM, cache, etc. Could also use m.2 to sata converter, if needed From a GPU card perspective I think I only need 1-2 GPU for VM (the igpu handles host and plex transcoding). I MIGHT need a 10GB nic later (but I could run a 10GB nic and GPU on x8/x8, right?). I think I was confusing VMs and IOMMU with bifurcation, etc. QUESTION: With the above board, is it correct to assume I can run everything I'm thinking and passthrough two GPUs to 2 VMs? Another option is the Gigabyte Z690 AORUS MASTER EATX LGA1700 Motherboard - couple of hundred cheaper but also has 10GBps ethernet built-in.   13. @Vr2Io Thanks! That's very interesting indeed. I wasn't sure how well 13th gen was supported by the kernel. I know 12 was spotty for awhile, but if 13th is fixed also, I'd definitely be up for power savings (or performance boost). So let's pretend I just up it to 13900k. How well does the gpu passthrough (add-in card) work? I've spent years looking at Threadrippers and bifurcation issues. I somewhat understand it, but what impact does moving to intel have? Drives: - 1 parity - 3 data (for now) - cache - 2 dedicated nvme for 2 x VM Dockers: - Plex - running a half dozen concurrent streams - Deluge - Cloud - Pi - Arrs... x2 - Minecraft server VM: - Windows with Blue Iris (6 cams) - Windows with NVidia GPU passthrough for workstation Might run a BTC lightning node, etc. I was looking at TR for bifurcation support and stupide upgradeability later on. However, the iGPU of intel caught my eye, etc. My understanding is that I can use the iGPU for plex transcoding and the nvidia for workstation. The Blue Iris VM could run without a dedicated card.   16. Howdy folks, Getting ready to work in some upgrades and curious as to everyone's thoughts or experience with "Manufacturer Recertified" or refurbished drives? Specifically, I'm looking at the 16/18TB Exos drives from someplace like this: https://serverpartdeals.com/collections/seagate-exos-enterprise-drives?pf_t_condition=condition%3AManufacturer+Recertified&pf_t_capacity=capacity%3A16TB&pf_t_capacity=capacity%3A18TB&pf_t_interface_type=interface%3ASATA I'm currently running WD drives size 8p/8/8/4/4/. I'd like to double parity and run two data drives so I could go with 16p1/16p2/16/16 or 18s across the board. It looks as if people enjoy the Exos and 7200, which is awesome. I'm just not sure sure on the refurb. On the one hand, the kinks have already been worked out 🙂 On the other, I don't want to end up with a batch that all fail together, etc. My thinking is that if they are manufacture recertified, they should be fine. I know some of you use refurb, etc., so I'm hoping for some experience feedback. Thanks! Kermit
  17. That's the thing... That's not an option. I stop array and go there and still see Drive1 Drive2 Drive3 Drive5 "All" isn't an option. When I stop the array, it still has a blank spot for disk 4 (1,2,3,5 are assigned). UPDATE: Okay, so I had to "uncheck" 1,2,3,5 for "All" to be the default option in Global Settings. I then did the same for all shares. If I try to move the drive up a slot, I get "invalid expansion" So I took the plunge: "New Config" and preserved parity and cache. Assigned Data Drives back in order. Start array with Parity Valid. Voila! I think I'm good - I ran a parity check for 1% with no errors, Will run a full one tonight.

FORMER CONFIG: Parity Drive1 Drive2 Drive3 Drive4 Drive5 Drive6 Drive7 Followed the "tried and true" method here: https://wiki.unraid.net/Shrink_array to successfully shrink and rebuild under "The "Remove Drives Then Rebuild Parity" Method" First step is: "Make sure that the drive or drives you are removing have been removed from any inclusions or exclusions for all shares, including in the global share settings. Shares should be changed from the default of "All" to "Include". This include list should contain only the drives that will be retained." So I switched from "All" to 1,2,3,5 and removed 4,6,7. Rebooted and rebuilt parity. Yay! The problem is that I now have: Parity Drive1 Drive2 Drive3 Drive5 And on all of my shares, it is "Include 1,2,3,5" without an option to select "All" Now, I THINK I supposed to Reset the Array under TOOLS -> NEW CONFIG and "Trust Parity" (I've just recheck parity; understand I need to be super certain drives are assigned correctly). Only real reference I see is here: https://wiki.unraid.net/UnRAID_6/Storage_Management#Reset_the_array_configuration but it's not clear that it's "Make your drives reset to a normal order" kinda things. I I reset the config. Will I need to adjust all my share includes back to "All" - if so, when in the process? Do I do this in maintenance mode? I just don't want to jack it up. Thank you! KermitJr.

  20. BLUF: Anyone have a specific mobo recommendation that is a stable Ryzen build? I keep reading stability nightmares, etc. Gigabyte seems to be popular. I'm hoping for 3-4 PCIe and decent IOMMU flexibility. I was thinking x570 to hopefully allow a later upgrade to a faster Ryzen. Thanks! -------------- I started a threadripper thread a few days back, but it seems TR 3 will not be backwards compatible, which took a bit of wind out of my sails. As such, I'm looking for something a bit more futureproof than Threadripper - especially since it looks like AMD will be killing it off after TR3 given that their normal Ryzen are fast closing the gap. BACKGROUND: My MSI K9A2 Platinum has worked like a champ for a little over a decade now. We're talking 24/7 file serving with a VM or two on the side. Lately I've continued to add more VMs and some Dockers - Plex, Sonarr, Radarr, Taultulli, DelugeVPN, Jackett, pihole, etc. The latest edition of Live DVR and a few extra users are pushing it to the limits. I've had the max of 8GB RAM for most of the time. I recently upgraded the original Phenom II from x4 to an x6 1090T. But it is tapped out for upgrades. And with no IOMMU / GPU passthrough, I can't really use the VM as a daily driver (which is currently a major primary goal). So I'm looking for the replacements. My thinking is that I can buy a decent Mobo now with a medium CPU and RAM amount. In the future, I can incrementally upgrade both as their prices drop. I considered some of the SuperMicro 24 bay Xeon servers flooding the market, but I currently have several 8GB drives and I can contain things to stay around the 8-9 drives total (a couple of 2TB I can ugrade over time). Plus, while many of these offer high thread count, speed isn't super without breaking the bank very easily. Going from lesser to greater in questions here: OTHER Stuff: Budget: Would like to stay under $900. Already have: Mid-atx case (old Antex Sonata), PSU, a couple of 1070s, HBA, etc. Cooler: I'm thinking with a noctua cooler ($90) Drive Bay: Newer 5 drive rack (to replace my SATA 1 Supermicro version)($100). RAM: 32GB (2X16) four about $150 (slower speed but entry-level) (Possibly double amount for Plex RAM transcoding). CPU Ryzen 5 3600 - only 65W and pretty close to the 3600x for less heat. Under $200. In a few years, I'm thinking I can double my core count with a Ryzen 9 or so for likely only a few hundred more bucks off ebay. EDIT: considering 7 2700 for higher thread count at same price. Any thoughts? QUESTION 1 - CPU: Any other recommendations on CPU? Is there a case to be made for a better price-value I should be looking at? MOTHERBOARD: That brings us to the Motherboard. So roughly $350 to work with, and I can later upgrade CPU and RAM for cheap. My Mobo will be here to stay. I think I'm now thinking AMD X570 AM4 platform. Reason are subject to your input, but it's new and shiny, it has PCIe Gen 4 (likely not going to matter anytime soon, but in a decade it might let me offload something else). 5G Ethernet. Biggest thing is it is more likely to be as futureproof as possible. Any other big benefits here? That said, I was thinking integrated graphics so I'm not wasting a PCIe slot - but not an option with Rzyen. So I'm thinking I can use a riser on a x1 slot (just need to be able to select primary). Regarding PCIe slots, I currently plan 1 for HBA, 1 for Window VM (ideally two), and one for Plex HW transcoding. I believe I can kick the Plex one to a x1 with riser, as well. Which means possible another one for a second VM (me on one, kids on the other simultaneously). I'd also like a couple of NVMe to play with. QUESTION 2 - Mobo: Rough search on Newegg gives a few options. What are the other options here? What do I need to consider? I know IOMMU grouping comes in to play - any suggestions? Any brands/models with better grouping than others? QUESTION 3- timing: When do you think the ideal time to buy will be? Black Friday? Cyber Monday? Sooner? Later? Thanks!   21. Thanks testdasi. That's a solid enough recommendation to swing me to Gigabyte. And guess I'll have to go with 4x16 for the RAM. Oh well. That said, if gen 3 TR is moving to a different socket, does that bring Ryzen back into the picture for me? Or do I just spring for a Gen 3 Threadripper and buy some future compatibility later? Anyone have thoughts on that aspect of things? I clearly need to do a bit more research, but I'm grateful for you inputs. Thanks, Kermit

Plus, while many of these offer high thread count, speed isn't super without breaking the bank very easily. That brings me to Threadripper. 3rd Gen will be released next month (Nov 2019), which means a price drop across the board. I'm looking at entry right now of something like a 1st Gen 1920x (12 Core) which is about $270. I could go 1900 (8core) at $160 - but, well, I'm avoiding bottom of the barrel just cause (but by all means - feel free to up sell me). 32GB RAM (2x16) is about $160. I'm thinking those will hold me over a couple of years and then things like 3rd gen will be super cheap, right? (okay, might upgrade the RAM sooner for plex ram transcoding, etc.) Regardless - it requires a rock solid Motherboard. I'm currently considering this MSI X399 board weighing in at about $350. Why? High rating on Newegg, 8 Sata, PCI gen 3 (for later HBA perhaps), and, well, MSI has done well by me. That said - any better recommendations for a mobo? Something you think will last and be available for upcoming Threadripper power requirements, etc.? I know there are some that have issues. Just don't have hour to devote to the topic (and I know many of you already have the gouge). My budget? Above puts me close to $900 with a noctua cooler ($60) and a newer 5 drive rack (to replace my SATA 1 Supermicro version). So please pour your wisdom into me.   25. I'll just throw in - yes, two years late. Unraid 6.7.2 Installed VM with Win10. No mouse. Tried three browsers. Not exactly sure what to do with that, but two years later and this issue keeps cropping up through the forums and Reddit. Any help?
