  1. So far so good. Installed an extra 2Gig of memory, Installed four 3TB Hitachi drives, Installed a 2 port PCI-e card which was a fiddly project. Stuck in the USB key and installed v.5b14. Configured it and installed the Plus key as well as UnMenu. Now to the ardent job of preclearing those 4 drives. So far the log only indicates a few minor issues that maybe just idiosyncrasies. Tried to enable Jumbo Frames but no go always got the message invalid argument. A search revealed this: The HP NC107i 1Gb NIC, based on Broadcom's BCM5723 chip, DOES NOT SUPPORT JUMBO FRAMES! This HP "ProLiant" server actually comes with a NIC with no jumbo frame support. Guess I'll have to run MTU = 1500 because I am not opening this thing again and stick an Intel NIC in the PCI-e 16 slot.
  2. I received mine yesterday and judging from the packaging and its content, it looks to be brand new, no signs whatsoever that it had been with someone else before.
  3. Thanks that gets me one step closer. I presume you are running version 12 and not 12a is that correct? Thanks O2G
  4. And which Beta are you using at this time? I noticed that many went back to v5b11
  5. That looks cool any idea how lay ones hand on that cool mesh grill thingy?
  6. Just got my HP N40L micro server and are about to set it up with four 3TB Hitachi drives. The only remaining question is which one of the many Betas is to be recommended? Do I have run a permissions script on these 3TB drives? Since it came with cough, cough WHS2011 is that worthwhile to run in an environment of 1 Unraid server and 1 WHS?
  7. It maybe worthwhile for newly registered persons to have to post first in a welcome forum first with a personal message and then after a few days allow general posting. On some boards that I frequent posting is only allowed for the 1st week in restricted forums before unleashing persons to the general forums.
  8. This came along with the order confirmation email: Thank you for shopping at Newegg.com. Due to increased volume during the Holiday Season it is possible that your order may take slightly longer than usual for processing. Our normal time frame for processing is 24-48 hours. If you have not received a shipping confirmation e-mail within 48 hours, you may contact our Customer Service Department for assistance. We thank you and appreciate your patience.
  9. Well my card has been charged, additional 2Gig of memory for $17 from NewEgg and the beast is on its way. Got an email telling me because of loads of orders delivery will be a bit delayed. I wanted this so that I can test the 5.beta versions and get some usage of my dormant 4 3TB Hitachi drives. Neil0 I have followed your build closely and hopefully mine will turn out just as pleasing. I presume that the OEM version of MS Windows Home server is on the 250Gig HD or is there optical media for installing this server. Since I only use this for serving Media content what can one use this WHS 2011 for? Any chance if Tom will offer a Black Friday deal on the Plus Version of UnRaid?
  10. 11. Interesting & thanks for the find I have implemented the registry changes as well as Joe's suggestion to change the command line in the go script file that starts SMB. Once the weekend is over and I had time to test it I hope that the problem is solved. Thanks O2G
  12. In the data sheets & from the website it says for the promo version regarding the Processor: Processor: AMD Dual Core 1.5GHz Athlon II For the $349 version it says regarding processor in the PDF data sheet: Processor: AMD Turion™ II Neo N40L (1.5GHz) But then on Overview of the $349 version regarding processors it says: Processor family: AMD Athlon™ II AMD Turion™ II I could not find any difference regarding these two processors, but I presume that either one will do for an UnRaid server. This leaves just one remaining hick-up, how to combine two shares from two different servers into one share. Otherwise this will just be a test box for preclearing drives and testing Beta versions. I am dying to find a solution for the four 3TB Hitachi drives that I bought a few months ago for $109.
  13. As stated in my previous comments, once the copying starts there is very rarely an issue, it is the start of the copying and the finding/displaying of the directories. Cables have been swapped, bought a Trendnet 8 port Giga switch into which the units plug in, have a 3COM Giga switch same issue no difference. I will try from 2 other PCs and then finally I will dust off my XP laptop and see if that makes a difference. I fully agree that the problem is outside UnRaid and I want to try a different GUI for copying content, because I feel I already wasted too much time with this annoying behavior. Thanks for your advise & I will follow up after the weekend.
  14. The Remote Differential Compression is already turned OFF. I saw that thread and also noticed the idiot that was suggesting changes in the USB controller. So this did not help me.
  15. I saw this deal but wasn't sure about it when I finished my research they were out of stock This was the deal for the HP ProLiant MicroServer but it DID NOT state the model N40L but did list the same HP part #: 658553-001 http://www.shopping.hp.com/product/rts_server/rts_server/1/storefronts/658553-001 What is the product difference between the above offer and the following offer: http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm/WF05a/15351-15351-4237916-4237918-4237917-4248009.html The only difference I could detect is the processor, but could not find anything in detail. Any comments if this is a decent deal if it should come back?
  16. Just to put everyone in a better picture, 1st off I am not running Beta versions, 2nd look at this thread http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=15845.30 and the screenshots. It is not a matter of connecting it is a matter of a long delay before connecting and on rare occasions loosing the connection during a transfer to the UnRaid shares ONLY when using Windows explorer. It just sits there and waits and waits before it starts copying or even displaying sub folders. Drives have spun up, directories have been cached. Note this comment from the above sited thread: I am running 4.7 I have never updated to the Beta version. I have an Intel PCI-e NIC that installed in the Unraid box without a hitch, and is immediately recognized. Everything works just fine, 1080p BDs being streamed to WMC7 x32 HTPC, cat6 & Gigabit switches, the jumbo frames I believe have nothing to do with Windows explorer and its funny behavior as this happened before I used jumbo frames, I was looking into jumbo frames to get rid of the problem with Windows explorer. I am copying from a QNAP NAS using TeraCopy 43Gigs at a steady 30MB/s straight to the array, no slow down here. I am copying from my local machine straight to the array between 42MB/s and 50MB/s the network is fine. I have a 64bit Win7 machine as workstation & a 32bit Win7 HTPC. The connectivity is fine and the speed is more then acceptable. The problem is Win Explorer GUI reading the shares and its folders. In rare occasions it stops in the middle of copying and gives the error "Destination no longer exists", horse pucky. I open another explorer window and have to egg the machine on to reach the destination. At times a new explorer instance displays the directories but the old explorer window that had the error message does not. I am thoroughly convinced that this is a Windows issue that was introduced in Vista and never fixed in Win7. All these people complaining about slow moving and copying using Win7 explorer can't be wrong. If I had an XP machine I would research it but it is too time consuming to get to the bottom of what is a Windows issue. No problem with the NIC as that one is listed as supported. Look at the screen shots when the 1st file being read is a large file the following ones display the error "The system can not move the file to a different disc". B.S. it did it shortly there after. I have almost given up on this issue and am trying to use a different GUI for copying moving content from the Windows machine to the UnRaid server. I tried WinSCP using the credentials of "root" is sees the Disk shares but not the user shares and in the disc shares it does not see any other folders. WinSCP uses FTP protocol. It could be that it is a permissions issue but I would expect that with the user root I have all the permissions I need. If there is a different application that allows from a Windows machine to copy to the UnRaid box without these annoying idiosyncrasies or how to use WinSCP for it please assist me with it. Thanks O2G syslog-20111125-004513.zip
  17. Check out this thread http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=16497.0 for what was suggested regarding restarting the server. Looks like your webgui is not displaying. Either 2 other methods to access the server via Putty or directly from the console connected to the box.
  18. What you wrote should have given you a clue. When you stopped the array from UnMenu it should have just come back indicating that the array has been stopped and the drives have been unmounted and that it is ready for powerdown. But because this did not happen, it didn't matter what you entered afterwards as commands your machine had gone south long before. An orderly shutdown was no longer possible for you, perhaps for some of the more knowledgeable users here they could have found out from the commandline what the problem is. Also unless logs were written during this time and if you can post them, you will not be able to determine what caused it and how to prevent future happenings. Write it off as one of the many mysteries in cyber space, solar flares, hardware fatigue or Error is between keyboard and chair If you want to feel a bit better about this problem then just read some of the Announcements regarding the Beta releases and you will soon get the idea this not really a problem maybe at best a nuisance.
  19. Linux is normally not known for the BRS method (Big Red Switch) so you had three options and I don't think anything would have helped something was hosed beyond believe. The options you could have used is the powerdown script from the /usr/local/sbin/ directory, OR the command "shutdown -t 2 -r" which would have waited 2 seconds then shutdown all processes and reboot the server, OR according to this link http://www.computerhope.com/unix/uhalt.htm halt sets the computer to a mode that enables a user to turn off the computer. Which to me sounds a normal and safe procedure. Because you experienced something that clearly frightened you the box must have been in a state from where there was no return, or perhaps you did not give the command enough time to execute or the box now just expected for you to throw the switch. Difficult to say as I assume that you had no feedback from the console. The beauty of UnRaid as your box comes back online it has the ability to repair any data that may have been corrupted. Again as said before it maybe to your advantage to update to version 4.7 as that one seems to be the version of choice when it comes to stability & reliability.
  20. I am running UnMenu version 1.2 and there is no power down in the userscript page. Maybe I need to go to the next version. Use Unmenu to stop the array then from putty go to the directory /usr/local/sbin/ and execute the powerdown script from the command line that should be a safe way of getting your server down and up again. In addition you can always use the shutdown command with a reboot option have done that many times without any difficulties.
  21. You have to go through the painful learning curve of some basic Linux commands. Two things I suggest 1. try to install a remote connection program like "Putty" that allows you to do commands from the command prompt. 2. do some of these commands from the console. bring up the command prompt from the console and type: halt -p or run from the command prompt /usr/local/sbin/powerdown This will power off the UnRaid server. Then power it back on and see what happens. I find myself constantly Googling for Linux Commands "Whatever I need to find" part of the staple for running UnRaid, no way around taking on board some of the basic Linux commands like "cd" or "ls". Remember it is not User but usr which verifies that Unix the basis for Linux was written by programmers who hated to type or space aliens, take your pick.
  22. Reading the reviews at the Costco web site it has 2 stars with many valid complains from the 15 reviews. Don't know if this is such a great deal considering the problems that some experienced with this external drive.
  23. When I set my ethernet connection on the server to use Jumbo Frames, I had problems connecting to the webgui, but Unmenu was able to. Also if you are not running 4.7 yet I would advise strongly to update to that version. What kind of network connection do you use, do you use the onboard NIC?
  24. For Black Friday & Cyber Monday you should be able to pick up a switch that has a GigaLan connection, hook up the pieces and then forget about. It is not worth for the few bucks to forgo the switch solution. Of course if you are in an area where these type of pieces are hard to come by then that is a different story.
  25. You can get to the logs by accessing the flash drive. \\TOWER\flash\logs if you can't do it on the UnRaid server, then disconnect the flash drive connect it to a free USB port on your PC and get it from there.
