  1. I would like to have some input on how to connect the disks in the new setup? I have currently 7 data disks + parity. I will most likely expand beyond that. In particular, I'm in doubt how to allocate disks across controllers. Will it be best to have the parity disk on the M1015 controller with most (and to start with all) of the data disks; or is it better to attach it to the SuperMicro SATA-3 port and have the data disks on the M1015? And going beyond that - will it be best to expand the array on the motherboard ports or the second M1015 controller?
  2. Hi. Sorry for the late reply - didn't see it 'till now. I use 4.7, not 5 like you do I have the same sloooooooow boot as you describe. Its not a major issue though. I tend to boot once every couple of months (or less). I have never tested Sleep modes. I just spin the drives down.
  3. The build is heavily influenced by Johnm's excellent ATLAS build. A proven success based on many of the same components that I'm now sourcing. A BIG thank you goes to the high level of documentation that went into the ATLAS build. That was deciding factor for me to embark on an ESXi build, having proven hardware and a very nice walkthrough. Why Pleiades: Pleiades are according to mythology the seven daugters of the Atlas - and as per above, Atlas is arguably the father of the setup The server will in time serve seven(ish) purposes Pleiades is the logo of Subaru - I'm a Subaru owner and board member of the Danish Subaru Owners Club It will be mythical, and like Zeus created the Pleiades stars on the Death of the seven sisters, this will be created as a living memory of the soon dead machines that it will replace Intended use: OS at time of building: ESXi 5.0 + unRAID 4.7 (to be migrated to 5.0.xx) CPU: Xeon E3-1230 or E3-1260L (I will measure the system power draw to see if the “L” is saving enough to warrant the extra purchase price) Motherboard: SuperMicro X9SCM-F RAM: Kingston 16GB 2x (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM ECC Unbuffered DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Server Memory Model KVR1333D3E9SK2/8G or 4*Crucial 4GB DDR3-1333 PC3-10600 RAID Card: 1 or 2 IBM M1015 to be reflashed. Some of the rest is on order and can be refunded 14 days after reception. Any input on the build is appreciated.
  4. You could look at Hamachi. Then you would not have to open/ expose anything, and as a side benefit you will have access to your shares etc.
  5. Hamachi VPN which is available as an unRAID plugin I believe will do what you need
  6. I use nPVR (previously GB-PVR) http://forums.gbpvr.com/ since 2004. All the recordings from there are one of the main reasons for my venture into unRAID... The recording devices I use are currently Silicon Dust HDHomeRun - a dual tuner device that is connected to your LAN (not a card in your PC --> flexible placement) and a FireDTV. Both record HD from cable just fine. I would recommend the HDHomeRun. It's very stable and a very nice unit. Look at the forums and wiki in the link above for other alternative HW.
  7. Damn You're so spoilt Here in Denmark it's +$0,40/kWh, and it's not unlike other places here in Europe. So energy saving features are quite important over here
  8. I had very similar speed with the exact same disks from different W7/32bit workstations. I have just recently changed the parity to Seagate Barracuda Green ST2000DL003 (5900rpm) and unjumpered and precleared the 2TB EARS that was parity before and replugged it to replace a 400GB disk. Speed virtually unchanged and very close to yours. It's probably what you get with unRAID and those disks.
  9. I have an old 100GB 7200 RPM PATA 2½" disk mounted through SNAP that I intend to use for this purpose. Something like that could probably fit in somewhere in your case without taking up a 3½" slot or SATA port...
  10. Someone's warming up to a major HW upgrade by softening the misses up with a minor (but noticeable) one ... Back on topic: I have used Acronis with success in the past, so +1 for that.
  11. Yeah - two different types of prisons there... I'm no fan of either. With a Mac You're out of luck with MM as You've gathered. MediaMonkey is actually a single user system. It is however possible to install it on and run it from an unRAID share. The database is also stored in a folder there in that case. As mcs states, the meta data - including cover art etc. - can be embedded in the music files by defaut by MM, which should be done.
  12. Look at MediaMonkey - http://www.mediamonkey.com/ to keep yourself out of the Apple closed inflexible world. It will synchronise your existing music library doing the required conversion on the fly. I have managed my music library by this for years. I now have a centralised installation on my unRAID server, I can manage my library from any PC i have, I sync with iPhone 3GS, iPod Classic (160GB), Sony K810i phone (through USB stick) and a disk normally attached to my car PC. Used to sync to my Creative Zen Vision:M until it got stolen. It will work with your iPad just fine You will have to install iTunes to get the drivers in there, and you can still sync apps and whatnot with Apple. Just deselect Music sync, and you're good to go. PS: Unfortunately, Microsoft has closed down the Zune so hard, that no other known software can sync with it but the native. But MediaMonkey has got most everything else covered. You should usually wait a couple of weeks when a new iOS is released before you upgrade to allow the developers to update. Other than that, it's a breeze
  13. Exactly - I completely agree. This is one simple change (move the download behind several clicks and warning pages) and leave discussions, forums open, and Tom/LimeTech won't have to (waste) time administering access and whanot for closed groups. Simple - clean - effective.
  14. I sort of agree with this. Being a Linux ignorant I know enough not to be part of first or second wave - I do plenty bleeding edge testing with software where I know how to rescue myself... However, as as way to a) protect the kamikaze users who install while drowning themselves in hot coffee with a plastic bag over their head (!) and b) still enabling the large group of sensible users to be educated; not least by following the evolvement and behaviour of a new version, troubleshooting process, workarounds etc. I suggest: Keep the test forum completely open for all to read (and even write) Keep the download behind three big warning screens and an e-mail activation link (at the least) or if so decided only accessible by invitation That was my 2 cents...
  15. Its really good to see how issues are addressed immediately. Looking forward to 5 getting stable enough to dare attemting insalling it on a production server. Based on the screenshot - this seems like good input for a usability improvement in color optimisation (i.e. clearly discernible colors) when the more functional stuff has been ironed out
  16. Didn't know tapatalk before. But I love having access to it like this weekend being on the road visiting family without normal browser access. I'll be using this daily I think. Thank you for enabling it. It is good medicine against compulsive board checking itches...
  17. Yep! Like a print of http://tower:8080/ or http://tower:8080/unraid_main Then You will be able to correctly assign drives to correct slots in case of your existing MoBo fails. I agree with the poster above. Wait until you get a real reason to change/upgrade: It breaks, you need more ports, you need more horespower to run add-ons, ...
  18. I had an Intel board die catastrophically from a leaking Thermaltake water cooling installation (crap hoses went brittle in little over a year ) . I replaced with a used AMD board, and was up and running with absolutely no issue. Most important thing is to keep a physical print of our disk configuration, as you will need it for the new installation.
  19. Sounds great - I have a separate PATA 2½" 7200rpm disk outside the RAID mounted with SNAP ready to roll
  20. I already have the commercial detection software that can report/save cutlists in a number of formats. I was simply hoping that Handbrake could use such cutlist to avoid the marked sections in the timeline when re-encoding... Apparently no such luck. I still like this functionality even without the cutting
  21. +1 for that! Really impressive and well described. I will definitely take this for a spin soon. A lot of the cartoons recorded could do with some shrinking! Related question: Would Handbrake support cutting commercials as well, given that there is a cut file already available next to the original file in a suitable format (i.e. commercials have already been identified)?
  22. I sincerely believe this should not be underestimated. A nice and easily understood interface with simple to understand options and clear descriptions/help will no doubt bring a whole new group of users on board as well as making things a little easier for regular users and potentially reducing the amount of support load for more simple things often required from the resident experts...
  23. It just occurred to me, that my home is filled with best of breed, best support one-man development: nPVR (formerly GBPVR) - Developed by a kiwi named Graham. Been happy with it since 2004 after dismissing other solutions. Great forum support and community addon development. Weather-display - Developed by another kiw named Brian. Been happy with it since 2004. Great forum support and community addon development. unRAID - Developed by a US guy named Tom. Been happy with it since january 2010. Great forum support and community addon development. Looks like a lot of good stuff comes from dedicated committed developers who develop the core product alone - successfully for years - and build up a loyal and dedicated community...
  24. Wow - this is a brilliant and all to well hidden script. Only found it due to the request from peter_sm here: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=10660.msg102646#msg102646 This should definitely be part of the package manager!!! I am using a PCH-100 in the living room, and the timeouts at first use has been one of the only gripes with unRAID, and I have so far explained the necessity of it due to power saving from spindown. But it does not rank very high on the WAF scale. With this, it will be MUCH better
