Hi everyone,
Just thought I would introduce myself and explain my choice for unraid and maybe gleam some information from the veterans and see what advice I can gather.
I have been working with computers for many years and recently decided to start a plex server that has been running for about 12 months, currently it has 8 4tb SAS drives in Raid 5 and a 500gb SSD as an operating system. this all works fine and has no issues except the capacity of my Adaptec 8804 raid controller is only 8 drives and I have a habit of filling drives with stuff I don't need and never deleting.
i still have about 7tb free from a 20tb array so wasn't really rushing to make a change, that was until I decided I wanted to expand the server to host games. originally for myself but when researching different options I thought it would be good to install a client managed solution.. less work for me when my friends break stuff (hopefully)
I installed OGP on my windows pc and although works quite well it wasn't quite good enough for what I needed or should I say "Wanted" lol
so.. this is where unraid comes in.
I was looking at pterodactyl and found a youtube video explaining the use of unraid and dockers and thought this was perfect for what I want.. plenty of guides, seemingly a good community and great support.
so.. I have plunged into buying two servers..
I have ordered a Supermicro CSE-847 128gb ram with 46 Drive slots (I know about the current Cap of 30)
the server comes with 31 4tb drives preinstalled so will be installing two 1tb cache SSD's and moving the extra drives to the second server that is a Poweredge R820 with 256gb ram.
I have my original server with the raid array installed and im sure i will find a use for that in the future.
my idea was two unraids, one to use as a plex / file server (supermicro) and the second as the gaming server (Poweredge). with the game server backing up to the file server periodically.
I'm not planning of fully commercialising, its intended for friends to create and account and create game servers to play on till they get bored and move to another game and if necessary create a game server for that also.
PS: I have a habit of jumping into things and then researching afterwards but that's how I learn
