  1. thanks for the response. Its a retail copy, so i looks like i can just use the key for a fresh install on the VM and then activate and then upgrade to Win 10. I'll read up on the XML tweaks you mentioned. cheers
  2. hi - wondering if anyone is able to give me a quick pointer in the right direction? I currently have Windows 7 Ultimate (32-bit) installed on a physical machine. I plan to sell this machine off, but without an OS. My goal is to use the product key from that install and the free windows 10 upgrade within an Unraid VM. I'm a bit confused on the order of things. Should i first un-register/uninstall the product key from the existing physical PC? Or should i do the upgrade to Windows 10, then unregister it ... and then my assumption is I have to jump through some hoops with Microsoft to inform them that the key is being used on "new" hardware and hence it needs to be activated for the Windows 10 VM i setup on unraid? hope this makes sense thanks thanks
  3. Thank you for the link John... very interesting read. I'll certainly be playing around with that setup once I've built out my new system.
  4. Hi Gary Thanks for your reply and for pointing out the error (that's what I get for blindly copying from the online vendor's website description instead of the manufacturer's description!) I'll change it in my OP to reflect the correct specs. As for the gfx decision, I totally agree with trying my current 5450 card first. I'm somewhat hoping there may be other people out there who have some experience with the same motherboard who can point me in the right direction regarding gfx cards and passthrough. any thoughts on the other queries about the distro column? Cheers again
  5. Hi all, Been using Unraid for years now and have just started learning more about dockers and virtualisation. I am actually currently running Unraid 6 (RC6a) and have played around with creating Windows virtual machines - all super easy using the great guides. I've also got some dockers running for SickBeard and NZBGet which again was quite straightforward. So I came across some really good deals on new hardware recently and i've been meaning to build another UnRaid box (this will be my third one!). I am hoping to get some feedback and specifically some guidance around setup and config of UnRaid 6 to meet my needs. Essentially i have been wrestling with the concept of UnRaid as a guest and then having options to use the same physical machine to serve up different VM's for different purposes. Alternatively I am considering that if in UnRaid 6 I can keep UnRaid on the bare metal and then spin up VM's, this may also be an option (which is less fraught with danger and having to deal with say ESXi issues). Primary Purpose : NAS Storage Device (circa 30TB at present) Highly desired secondary purpose : remove the need to have a separate physical machine i use OpenElec (Kodi) on as my media streamer/player. It just boots off USB and there is no separate OS i need to mess around with (no driver or frame rate issues - it just works and I love it, but if i cant get rid of a separate physical box then ALL GOOD! Tertiary purposes: - Host virtual OS's to mostly play around with but also give me future options when i want to use a Windows based OS for media / photo editing (keep it separate to to other machines so it doesn't get bloated with other "c r a p!" - Gaming - i am not a massive gamer, but id like to be able to play some of the recent (more graphics intensive) games if possible. My head starts spinning when i try to figure out how monitors and peripherals all "work" with virtual machines and how you "switch" between what is being displayed as you access different VM's (if that is even possible) So here is the stuff i have (im open to swapping out some components if there is concern or issue which means I couldn't make best use of the new setup). CPU : Intel Xeon E3-1231v3 (http://ark.intel.com/products/80910/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E3-1231-v3-8M-Cache-3_40-GHz) Motherboard : ASRock E3C224D2I Mini ITX (http://www.asrockrack.com/general/productdetail.asp?Model=E3C224D2I#Specifications) Case/Chassis : Silverstone DS380 Mini-ITX (http://www.silverstonetek.com/product.php?pid=452) RAM : 2 x Kingston 8GB KVR16E11/8I 1600MHz DDR3 unbuffered ECC CL11 (http://www.kingston.com/en/memory/search/?partid=kvr16e11/8i) PSU : Silverstone SFX SX500-LG 500W 80 Plus Gold PSU ()http://www.silverstonetek.com/product.php?pid=527 Data Disks: 6TB Seagate drives (STBD6000100) Cache : Crucial M550 256GB SSD GFX : Seriously need some advice here! GTX 750 Ti ? Having read through the hardware compatibility spreadsheet (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1LnGpTrXalwGVNy0PWJDURhyxa3sgqkGXmvNCIvIMenk/edit#gid=0) I have a few really n00b questions: Host GPU - I understand this to be the physical GPU assigned to the host machine. However with my combination of Xeon CPU (no integrated GPU) and the ASRock motherboard (only 1 PCI slot) would this cause me any specific issues? Specifically I am wanting to passthrough the installed physical GFX card to say an OpenElec VM, or to a Windows based VM for gaming etc. Note : I typically run my current unraid server headless (only ever connecting the vga cable if the web UI becomes unresponsive - something which occurs say once every year!) Distro column - I know this is a reference to the linux distro, but i dont see any reference to Windows OS. Is this because passthough just works or that no-one is documenting gfx card compatibility for other non linux-based OS's yet? Sorry this is probably a really stupid question. Lastly - as mentioned before I want to be able to run OpenElec (Kodi) as my media player. One other important aspect is the ability to passthrough HD audio (bitstream to my AV receiver). My current HTPC contains the ATI HD5450 card which in all honesty has been perfect and it works great with OpenElec. Does HD Audio passthrough work correctly once you passthrough the entire GFX card to the virtual guest? Thanks for reading!
  6. any progress on this? I'm trying to figure out if I go unraid as host or unraid as guest (more details in my separate hardware thread here: https://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=41317.0) the ability to run a openelec vm with full gfx and audio passthrough is pretty much my deciding factor. I'm totally over building a windows based htpc with separate kodi install since I wasted so much time with drivers and refresh rate issues. ever since I switched to openelec I've never looked back. Thanks
  7. That sounds great. Thanks for taking the time to do this, for the good of the community. I'll look forward to reading it I'm on the brink of putting my third Unraid server together (hmm did I hear someone say UCD...?). I was just reading through some posts and was wondering if a newer guide existed for vSphere 6 and Unraid 6. Sounds like I could be in luck p.s Thanks Johnm for all the help in your guide - truly awesome work by the community
  8. I've been toying with getting this case for a number of weeks / months and have been keeping a close eye on this thread.. Thanks for taking the time to report your findings and for posting the photos.
  9. All three look okay. The drive temps are warm though. In the low to mid 40s. That is okay but I prefer to see them in the 30s. You might consider a little extra cooling. The ECC recovered attribute is a little unsettling, but modern drives store data with redundancy acknowledging that media related errors will exist and that the redundancy is used in the normal usage use case to detect and correct such errors. Seagate it's very upfront reporting this, whereas other drives either mask this activity our have it occur to a lesser extent. My slight personal bias against Seagate not withstanding, these drives have successfully passed the preclear. I suggest, as with any drive, that you continue to monitor the smart reports over time. thanks so much for looking at the logs. Agreed - the temps are a little hotter than ideal, but I livve in Australia and the ambient here was about 33 when i ran the preclear. I am actually looking to run the 6TB drives in a new enclosure and am currently investigating the best options for what my next unraid build will be. cheers
  10. Hi folks, Can anyone take a look at the attached logs for preclear on three 6TB Seagate drives (ST6000DX000-1H217Z) and let me know if there is anything of concern please? There was some weird stuff about error rates which i didn't quite understand and thought may have been a bit suspect. I can post the _finish and _start logs if needed. many thanks p.s preclear on three 6TB disks simultaneously took a whopping 55hrs and 38mins preclear_rpt_Z4D0D6Y6_2015-03-27.txt preclear_rpt_Z4D0E7T7_2015-03-27.txt preclear_rpt_Z4D0711K_2015-03-27.txt
  11. So as per above, has anyone built a system using the ASUS P9A-I/C2550/SAS/4L board? Interested to hear about any issues encountered (if any)? cheers
  12. just been looking at this board too ... looks great! a fairly good review here: http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/6599/asus-p9a-i-c2550-sas-4l-intel-avoton-server-motherboard-review/index.html
  13. I would have thought it was just a case of grabbing the right versions of packages from http://packages.slackware.com/ thanks! that's exactly the info I needed (Sorry i am a novice with *nix so finding my way around is painfully slow.) Your link gave me the info i needed.... I got Screen working on unraid V6 using the following files: http://packages.slackware.com/?r=slackware64-current&p=screen-4.0.3-x86_64-4.txz http://search.slackware.eu/cgi-bin/package.cgi/download/slackware64-14.0/slackware64/a/utempter-1.1.5-x86_64-1.txz the second package was needed as i think Screen has a dependency on it. anyway, i copied to my flash drive and then just ran the following from the command line: installpkg screen-4.0.3-x86_64-4.txz installpkg utempter-1.1.5-x86_64-1.txz happy days (if anything above is like a total no no then happy for someone to correct me and ill accept the slap on the wrists!) cheers
  14. Haha and that was exactly what I tried doing before my post. Unfortunately I couldn't find anything and I'm guessing it's not something you have either? If you happen to have it then I would really appreciate the source to allow me to download it. Cheers Sent from my GT-I9305 using Tapatalk
  15. thanks for the refresh of unmenu Joe. I have recently started playing with UnRaid v6 and one of the packages I always used on v5 (in conjunction with preclear) was SCREEN. I just tried running it on the UnRaid V6 box and it doesnt seem to work - I get a "CANNOT EXECUTE BINARY FILE" error which i understand is related to running a non 64bit executable. So my question is, how can i get screen working on Unraid 6? thanks
  16. Hi. Do you mean physically there is no room for the drives in the n54l? If so then take a look at the link I put at the very start of my original thread to my plan to use the n54l with a SAS card to connect to the n36l which effectively is just a storage box holding additional drives (jbod) So I guess my first step would be to install the SAS card and expand the number of drives I can connect to the array. I guess for the sake of simplicity I'd tag on the two new 4tb precleared drives which would be connected via the SAS card. Once those are part of the array I can freely move the physical location of the drives around as well as their connection point (the two original disk3 and disk4 drives come out of the n54l and move into the n36l housing.....and the two new 4tb disks switch into the n54l's drive cage) Cwoar blimey it's a bit of a head scratch trying to get that to make sense in written form! If I'm just blabbing on and you know all the above but still see something unclear then please call it out... I'd rather be 100% sure I know what I'm doing Thanks again Sent from my GT-I9305 using Tapatalk
  17. Hi all. Thanks for the replies. Yes sorry I should have made it clearer that I'm running unraid v5 (although I did think that all v4 support is in the other v4 sub forum?) It seems like I'm best to just preclear the new 4tb drives and then add them to the array. After this I can just shuffle the disk assignments around. I guess I was just worried that unraid would complain about me 'swapping' an existing data drive with a new empty drive and would thus think it needs to rebuild the contents of the old 2tb onto the 4tb drive. It seems like I do NOT need to run initconfig either. Thanks again all - I'll hopefully get the chance to do this in the next week or so once I get some extra hardware shipped to me. 18. Hi all, Firstly, i have some background info located in this post here : http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=31500.0 I wanted to ask if the following migration / reconfiguration of disks is going to be possible. Here is a quick summary of how things are currently setup in my N54L (running 6 drives): As you can see i have FIVE 4tb drives and ONE 2tb drive. As part of the expansion I want to reconfigure some drives and the shares. Here is what i was thinking to do (take note of the serial numbers to keep track of which disk is going where!) So the jist of it is that I want to replace the current disk3 and disk4 with two new 4tb disks to expand SHARE1 I want these disks physically housed in the N54L. The 'old' disk3 and disk4 move over to the N36L housing and become disk 6 and disk7 respectively. So am i correct in thinking I can achieve this by following these steps: 1) Perform parity check on array 2) Take array offline and un-assign disk3 and disk4 3) Perform all the hardware changes and physical movement of drives 4) Fire up unraid and at the drive configuration screen: (i) assign the two new 4tb drives the disk3 and disk4 slots (ii) assign the 'old' disk3 [b2SS] to disk 6 (iii) assign the old disk4 [D2BG] to disk 7 5) Modify share configuration in unraid to include disk6 and disk7 6) Start array 7) Perform parity check which will rebuild the parity since it may have been invalidated??? Part of me thinks after step 1 I actually need to remove all the unraid drive configuration so that unraid doesn't start thinking disk3 and disk4 took a dump and need recovering? Is this correct, and if so do i just run the initconfig command? Just looking for some guidance as losing any data due to a silly oversight on my part is going to drive me bonkers! thanks folks
  19. anyone able to take a quick look and confirm / deny my plan of action isn't going to cause me to have to down an entire bottle of whiskey after trashing all my data? thanks
  20. purchased good deal, keep up the great work Tom
  21. So a few of the parts I ordered have started to come through but unfortunately the DELL SAS card isnt here yet so i have not had the chance to make too much progress. In the mean time i wanted to ask (moreso reconfirm) if the following migration / reconfiguration of disks is going to be possible. Firstly, here is a quick summary of how things are currently setup in my N54L (running 6 drives): As you can see i have FIVE 4tb drives and ONE 2tb drive. As part of the expansion I want to reconfigure some drives and the shares. Here is what i was thinking to do (take note of the serial numbers to keep track of which disk is going where!) 22. just a quick update to the original post based on some further info and advice... Got some items on order so will update the thread when the goodies arrive!
  23. that's great - just the kind of info I needed. I've updated the diagram to reflect the fact that ill run 8 separate ground wires between the two PSU's (got lazy and didn't draw them as 8 separate lines but you get what i mean!) Any idea on the SAS card or cables? I'm struggling with the whole SFF-8070, SFF-8088 and target vs host as well as trying to know how to wire it all up neatly. As far as my googling powers go, I dont think there is a two port external mini SAS half height PCI bracket (they all seem to come with the full height brackets). I guess i could use both of the half hight slots and just put in two single slot exernal SAS connector brackets??? Neil - ill certainly keep a photo record of the progress and update this thread. As for the total drive storage, i'm looking at initially doing : N54L: 6 x 4TB drives in the N54L (1 being the parity) N36L 1 x 4TB 6 x 2TB drives That will give me 36TB of usable space which will certainly give me enough room for at least another year. Ultimately Ill be looking to swap in the Hitachi 4TB deskstar drives when prices are good or deals are on. Final spec with both servers stuffed with 4TB Hitachi's would be 52TB useable space
  24. thanks once again for the reply - ive had a little more time to think and wanted to see if my hairbrained scheme would work! I started a new thread here : http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=31500.0 cheers
