  1. I am using the file integrity plugin. I never noticed any warnings about these files, though I might have missed the warning. I find the plugin throws a lot of false positives for file edits or new files or even just things being written to a log file, so maybe I never read the message that warned me about it. This is the sort of thing I was worried about. I've put the original files onto the server now and they will play without issue, even directly off the server. I can double check that my RAM is good. Is XMP enough of an overclock that you would recommend disabling that as well? Other than that I have no overclocks enabled. In terms of other potential hardware issues, I did have an old, old hard drive in there when the files became broken. The drive did error out and stop working and has since been replaced, but I was assuming that the parity drive (brand new drive) would protect all my data in that scenario. Is it possible that the drive took some data with it on its way out?
  2. No errors or warnings when copying the file from the Unraid server to my PC. Yes - the USB that was given to us by the videographer still has the original videos and they will play just fine off the USB. I can drag the "circle" on the slider in VLC in an attempt to start playback at a different point in the video. The video will begin playback if started from any moment before when it usually stops playing (the "broken point"). I can drag it forward past the broken point, press play, see nothing, then drag it back to the start again and it plays the beginning fine again. I tried many places after the broken point, and it is always the same. When I do drag the circle to get playback after the broken point, there is no sound and the video is stuck on the last frame that was played, but the slider keeps creeping forward and the timer keeps counting up as though it were playing. This is in contrast to how Window's "Films & TV" app behaves - when I try to get playback past the broken point, the timer stops counting up and I cannot get it to play near the start again without closing and re-opening the app. I understand this, and I agree this is a good time to bring up that reminder. Still, I believe that there is more to explore here. If Unraid is going to keep one of my copies of my files, I would like to know that it is reliable and that is not my impression so far. I want to know if this sort of thing has happened to someone before. I want to know if there is something I should be doing to monitor for errors or broken files like this. I wouldn't have known there was an issue with this backup if I had not tried to watch some of the video. Are there other files on my server that are broken and I just don't know it yet? If that is the case then Unraid is giving me a false sense of security that I have two backups when really I only have one. Is there anything else that can be done to find a root cause to this problem?
  3. Some of the videos from my wedding that were saved to my unraid server will not play through until the end anymore. The shorter ones are fine, but all of the longer ones will play for some time and then freeze. I've tried copying the file from the server onto my Windows machine and playing the video from there in case it was an issue of the network file sharing. I've tried playing the video in Window's default "Films & TV" app, and also in VLC media player, always the video will stop at the same timestamp. To be clear, this is not a data recovery post. If I need help with that I'll make a new thread. I want to know why or how this could happen so I can avoid it in the future. How am I supposed to trust this software for permanent file storage, if it can't even handle a few videos for one year? Please let me know what other information I should provide in order to help troubleshooting.
  4. I am necroing this thread, but since it is the first hit on google when searching for "hash key mismatch" it seems appropriate. I want to know how to check which file failed the checksum validation check. "use the plugin support thread" is not a helpful answer because there are over 1000 posts there, and the unraid forums offer no ability to search a specific thread. The full message that I see in the syslog is: Jan 4 03:00:01 Tower bunker: Verify task for disk1 started, total files size 55.4 GB Jan 4 03:04:15 Tower bunker: warning: SHA256 hash key mismatch (updated), /mnt/disk1/system/syslog-::1.log was modified Jan 4 03:22:29 Tower bunker: Verify task for disk1 finished, duration: 0 hr, 22 min, 28 sec. Jan 4 03:22:29 Tower bunker: verified 3867 files from /mnt/disk1. Found: 1 mismatch (updated), 0 corruptions. Duration: 00:22:28. Average speed: 41.1 MB/s Can someone shed some light on this? How can I identify which file had the mismatch? How is a mismatch different from a corruption, and why would it happen?
  5. SOLUTION! Well, a workaround at least. I took the Debian live USB that was created using Rufus' "Add fixes for old BIOSes" option, and just replaced the Debian files with the Unraid files using a plain old Windows file explorer. Honestly I'm a bit surprised that worked because it really felt like I was putting together puzzle pieces that were not designed to fit together. Here's the recap: Download a Debian live ISO file: start with debian.org/CD/live, and then choose your preferred download source, architecture, and flavor, then download the corresponding .iso file. (In my case it was "debian-live-11.2.0-amd64-xfce.iso".) Use Rufus to turn the downloaded Debian live .iso into a bootable USB. Make sure to check the box "Add fixes for old BIOSes", which does some magic to make the USB bootable for my old machine. Download the Unraid manual install files: go to unraid.net/download and scroll down to find the .zip file for the version of your liking. Delete all the files on the Debian live USB and replace them with the unzipped contents of Unraid's manual install files. There is no need to run the "make_bootable" script. Remember to rename the USB to "UNRAID".
  6. I've tried looking for a BIOS update for my motherboard but haven't had any luck. I've never done that before so I could use some guidance. Where can I go looking for firmware files if the original manufacturer doesn't have it? Drivers and documentation are available on Gateway's website for my GT5414E, but under BIOS/Firmware it just says "?_No results". Searching the motherboard's part number also doesn't turn up many useful results. Maybe someone else knows where to look?
  7. Update: I tried creating a Debian live bootable USB to see if my machine would boot from there. Using the default settings in Rufus to create the USB led me to the same "Verifying DMI Pool Data" message I keep getting stuck at. On the next attempt it did work after checking the box in Rufus for "Add fixes for old BIOSes (extra partition, align, etc)". Does anyone know what exactly that does and how I might be able to do the same thing when setting up the Unraid bootable USB?
  8. This machine used to run a 32-bit version of Windows Vista, but according to google the "Athlon 64 X2 4600+" is a 64 bit processor, so there should be no problems there. As I mentioned in the original post, I was able to boot to a TrueNAS USB drive on the Gateway which shows that it can boot from a USB. The TrueNAS USB was a bit different because it was an ISO image, but I'm not sure what the implications of that are. When I try that, my only option for "Hard Disk boot priority" is "Bootable Add-in cards". After saving that to the BIOS and rebooting, I see the same "Verifying DMI Pool Data". It is worth noting that when I use the "Boot menu" to manually choose a first boot device, I see my USB listed under the "Removable" section. When I choose it that way I get the same thing, but I think that shows that the USB is being detected as an option for boot. PS: I also changed back to having the "EFI-" folder (with the trailing dash) and ran the "make_bootable" script again, since I think this machine does not support UEFI, and I don't want that to get in the way.
  9. I renamed that folder and then re-ran the make_bootable script. Now I can boot to the USB on my main rig but it still doesn't work for the machine that I wanted to have Unraid on. That old Gateway was purchased around 2008 and it looks like it doesn't support UEFI. Any other ideas? Or is there just no hope for hardware this old?
  10. This is my first time setting up Unraid or any NAS system. I have created an UNRAID USB using the Unraid.USB.Creator, but I can't get my machine to boot to it. For hardware: I wanted to explore the idea of having a NAS before buying a bunch of shiny new hardware, so I dusted off my old Gateway GT5414E desktop. It still has the original motherboard, CPU, and RAM: Motherboard: MCP61PM-AM CPU: Athlon X2 4600+ RAM: 2x1GB I also have my main rig which I do not intend to use as an Unraid server, but I can use it to see if the bootable USB is working. It has much more modern hardware: Motherboard: Asus TUF Z490 plus wifi CPU: i5-10600k RAM: 2x16GB Here's what I've tried so far: In the BIOS: Set "First Boot Device" to be "Removable" Disabled "Quick Power On Self Test" (closest thing I could find to fast boot) Updated system date and time Using Unraid 6.9.1 instead of 6.9.2 Using the "boot menu" to choose my USB as the boot device Cleared CMOS I looked into doing a BIOS update, but I haven't found firmware for my motherboard yet Using a different USB stick Creating a TrueNAS Core bootable USB. This worked and I got through the first few pages of setup. I did not continue with that because they suggest having at least 8GB RAM, which I do not have in my old Gateway. Whenever I try to boot to the USB, the old Gateway machine will get to "Verifying DMI pool data . . . . ." and then not go further. My main rig will show a black screen until it the Windows login screen comes up. I'm not sure what else I should try. Please let me know if there is any other info that I should post to help figure this out.
