  1. If you know how to search you most definetely can and will find a great deals on ECC DDR2 unbuffered memory. Reasons - the 1GBit DDR2 chips were selling for under 80 cents a year ago (and you need 18 pcs of these for 2GB ECC stick). Today's price for these is close to $3. The trick is to find a vendor with old stock (at the old price) and place your order. Remember we are buying a kind of "server" memory and this is not what the general population is after. So good luck to you all. For example I just bought 4 sticks of 2GB DDR2 800 MHz ECC unbuffered memory for Can $ 33.47 each (the vendor only shipped 2 and they are still in transit)
  2. And you can save even more by using this motherboard (it is mini DTX size) for U$140 from newegg.com ZOTAC NM10-B-E BGA559 Intel NM10 Mini DTX Motherboard/CPU Combo 6 SATA onboard, one PCI-e x16, one PCI-e x1 and one miniPCI-e Attention - Only one review so far and a bit negative...
  3. I believe Kingston 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 1066MHz/PC2-8500 Hyperx are rated with 2.2V so keep this in mind. Since you are buying an Asus motherboard and they do support ECC memories I probably will buy a nice ECC DDR2-800 stick or two instead (believe or not a single 2GB is US$35 with free shipping if you know how to search)
  4. Yes, but that should make the prices for the 2TB drives drop even more They may drop or may not as the price is linked to the US$ - but they will definitely be 8% more expensive for a big chunk of the Canadian population beginning this July 1
  5. Both the NCIX and MemoryExpress (ships for free) do price matching. The WD20EADS is C$129.99 at best direct.ca and bewawa.com so you can get it for this price…. I recently bough two of the EARS from Memory express and like their shipping a bit more than Newegg’s - every drive was in a big padded envelope and wrapped around a few times. And if the new bigger models are around the corner - the $/TB will be certainly much higher
  6. http://www.frys.com/product/6157489 Ends Apr.8 Gigabyte board (beware of potential HPA issues) but with two PCIe x 16 slots. The CPU is "tray"- this usually means 30 days warranty and you will need an extra CPU fan. Good luck to those living nearby.
  7. Three of these enclosures (SUPERMICRO CSE-M35T-1B) plus the CM590 case will cost you a tiny bit more than the Norco 4220 itself and will limit you to only 15 drives. Right now the 20-case Norco 4220 is on sale for $349 with a free shipping and they will throw an extra 1TB Hitachi HD http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811219033&Tpk=norco%204220
  8. What kind of power supply are you using. The newer boards require an additional 4-pin plug for the 12V - it is near the top left corner of the board (where the mouse and keyboard connectors are located). Has this been connected?
  9. Since you are starting everything from scratch you may consider DDR3 based motherboards too as the price of the memory is comparable. You are buying a case without much expandability and 5 x 1.5TB HD for $500 will give you 6TB space which you can get by using 4 x 2TB for $20 more. (two separate orders from memory express pricematched to the $129.99 from pccyber.com). Just FYI the much loved Centurion CM590 is only C$67.10 from bestdirect.ca Not sure where are you located (if you are not in Ontario and the HST provinces you will get charged only GST from newegg.ca) but you can always try to use shopbot.ca and pricebat.ca to find the lowest price in Canada and to price match from there if possible. Good luck
  10. Read about this board here: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=5423.0 http://www.lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php?title=Hardware_Compatibility Memory express does "price matching" but they do carry only Asus and Gigabyte motherboards. And I am not sure how you can order rev3.0 and not 4.0 of this board. And where do you get 1.5GB disks for $80 each?
  11. Not sure where do you plan to get these and if you are going to change your mind and order but: 1. All Gigabyte boards have very annoying feature called HPA. You can search here for the potential consequences. I have the same board but mine is the much older rev.1.0 and the BIOS won’t allow me to disable this "feature". Also I do not have an option for "Wake on Lan" which is important if you want to put your server to sleep and to wake it up with a "magic packet" so I am looking to replace it and get another one (not Gigabyte) with two PCI-e X16 slots. Also there are posts here that the latest hardware revision 4.0 has only four SATA connectors and you plan to start with 5 drives. And this motherboard GA-MA74GM-S2 is on sale right now @newegg.ca for C$51.99 with free shipping. 2. Regarding your CPU - you may consider the 45 W only AMD Sempron 140 Sargas 2.7GHz 1MB L2 Cache Socket AM3 - only C$34 with free shipping from Newegg.ca Good luck
  12. Keep in mind two things - how many people are buying WD and how many are buying Samsung (the same failure rate will be reflected in more negative posts for the higher volume sold) And I personally do not like the way Newegg ships multiple OEM HDs - I think there is a higher possibility for damage from their way of packing these. Also when you buy a single drive you often may not go for the lowest priced one as there will be other considerations - speed, warranty, etc. But when you buy multiple units especially for our purpose the price you pay may take a priority and when you order the WDs they may take a hit during the shipping due to the Newegg's way of packing but of course you will blame the WD reliability...
  13. What is your configuration and how old is your Antec 450W "true" power supply as two different disks from different vendors failing in a row is a not a good sign. Did you run the memtest? Can you measure your 5V DC and 12V DC outputs with multimeter when your computer is on or at least provide the voltages from your BIOS - "PC Health monitor section" I do recall from memory some older Antec PSUs providing close to 4.75V rather than 5V or 5.25V right from the factory so it definitely can mess up with the HD electronics. Good luck.
