  1. This hard disk has been run in the past with elevated temperature (up to 53 deg C). Check your cooling.

  3. SATA III with mechanical drives is virtually identical to SATA II with mechanical drives - you probably wont feel any differences in real world use. The other thing is puzzled - NL36 is small case - how are you planning to fit 8 hard drives. If you do end up buying a controller make sure it is a low profile one with the low profile bracket. The brackets for IBM/LSI controllers are kind of custom orders, hard to source and not cheap to buy. And M1015 is used in Unraid by "turning off" the hardware RAID capabilities (if any) with firmware change. The other good controllers are the Supermicro - first generation SASLP (not that good for the money one will spend) and the second generation SAS2LP. They do work well with Unraid. Very cheap alternative will be the older generation IBM/SAS controllers - based on the LSI1068e chip but they support harddrives up to 2.2TB only. One example of these is the IBM BR10i.
  4. No, you are not using the ECC functionality (but you do have a real ECC memory and ECC capable motherboard) - in order to use this you will have to use Xeon and not the crippled i3 (the memory controller is build in the CPU and intel charges a pretty penny for ECC).

  8. I had no problem cleanly shutting down my server. I am asking because I would like to know why the WEBUI crashed. I have a theory but is is not widely shared here. However there is a reason why the commercial servers use ECC memory and are powered by UPS. Unraid is loaded in the RAM and a single bit flip (cosmic rays, momentarily power glitch) in that area can cause a "crash" in a module - consequences will be different but can be observed in one or another way. You have to flash both cards to their IT firmware and use the latest beta (this beta needs manual SAMBA fix for now) Connect any newer (SATA III, 2TB+ hard drives) to the M1015 - even when fully populated with 8 hard drives you wont have speed limitations. Then you can use the motherboards ports - they will support 3TB+ hard drives. Use the older (and only HD with capacity up to 2TB) to the other controller as they only support up to 2.2TB drive size. Any LSI 1068e based controller will have this limitation.
  10. Your signature is incorrect as you do not have Supermicro SASLP-MV8 - you have LSI SAS2008 controller - perhaps cross-flashed IBM M1015.   12. First off - your motherboard is with the initial factory BIOS. Just suggest to upgrade to the latest one, sett all features at "default" and then disable the unused stuff - serial and parallel ports, audio, IDE controller, floppy... However the problems are with the moving to a bigger case and in the process corrupting or damaging the flash drive (perhaps it come loose..) You will have to scan it and attempt to repair it in another computer.

  15. Are you sure that the card if flashed with the same package (firmware and BIOS) - one can use package for 9210-8i or 9211-8i. You can download and use the newly provided tool (SAS2IRCU) - which is used to set IR arrays
  16. I noticed the following line in a syslog (of pras1011): mvsas: PCI-E x8, Bandwidth Usage: 5.0 Gbps This x8 card claims double the bandwidth. I'm inclined to think therefore that it may be a hardware limitation, of the current mvsas card family. But as WeeboTech said, this is unlikely to be related to the speed issues being discussed. I believe that pras1011 uses SAS2LP cards (PCI-E 2.0, x8 electrical) and SASLPs are only PCI-E 1.1, x4 electrical)
  17. Re: 245 and 635 - different motherboard BIOSes - different settings, and the 4-core CPU stalls... Check your settings.
  18. 1. The parity disk should be on the motherboard as these ports are superior to the ones from the SM SASLP card (especially if fully loaded with 8 drives) 2. I believe that you need the newer firmware 0.21 for the SASLP card for 3 TB drives - but in theory you should connect the 3TB drives to the motherboard SATA ports and not SASLP. It also looks like you are not fully pre-clearing the disks but instead only zeroing it. Since the preclear of 3TB disk should take more than 24 hours if you do not have clean power where you live you may not be able to finish properly - that does not mean something is wrong with your system, motherboard or any other hardware - you just need a UPS.
  19. If you are interested in miniITX solution with limited number of drives the best option is to buy the HP microservers N36L or the newer N40L (available on Ebay from $225 with free shipping). You will get a nice small case, good and efficient small power supply, ECC memory support. Check the dedicated threads here.

If someone does not have the hardware configuration in their signature it will be a good idea to provide at least the basic hardware - motherboard, controllers (with firmware revision if possible) and number of drives (and distribution on these if possible) if we are discussing the speed. Tom is not clairvoyant neither he has the time to check our other posts to find out what hardware are we using.

You are running very old firmware (and BIOS) on the M1015 - version P10 Sep 15 15:35:08 Harvey kernel: mpt2sas0: LSISAS2008: FWVersion(10.00.02.00), ChipRevision(0x03), BiosVersion(07.19.00.00) The newer one is P14 and it may fix some of your problems with sleeping. In addition your motherboard has a newer bios F12F from Aug.27,2012 and one of the fixes is "Update AHCI ROM 3.1.0.0" - this should also help. Forgot-move the disk back to the M1015
  22. You will have to upgrade to latest memtest 4.20 - this one is frequently omitted when people do frequent upgrades from one versions to the next one and they only copy the two main files. Memtest 4.20 change-log:

Once you download the complete Pxx package and extract all the files there will be many folders with one of them named"sasbios_rel" Inside this folder are only two files - one is the actual "BIOS" needed for the flashing and the other, named "mptbios.txt" is the user manual for the BIOS. Take a look inside for more details.
  24. Flash the cards with the newest P14 firmware. Since you are planning to use 3x controllers with a Supermicro board you either do not flash any BIOS on them or if you do flash a BIOS then after booting with each card individually disable the BIOS. And while flashing familiarize yourself with the "sas2flash" user guide here - http://www.lsi.com/sep/Documents/oracle/files/SAS2_Flash_Utility_Software_Ref_Guide.pdf and try to run some command on the suspected bad card.
