  1. I did check the smart reports and have done a few short test and they complete without errors. This is one of the reasons i thought the drive was ok and it was just a connection issue. I may just pull the hard drive and do a comparison between the files on the drive and the computed files from the parity. This will then show the files with differences and from there i can probably figure out which data is correct. torres-diagnostics-20170706-1153.zip
  2. So this happened. Recently upgraded from v5.??? to 6.3. During the upgrade i slip the drives out so that if i have to do an ungraceful shutdown i dont have to go through the parity check. The upgrade went well and all seemed fine for about a week. Just did the first parity check (Write corrections to parity) and once it had been running for a while, i logged in to see 20k+ parity errors. I stopped the check to investigate. One of the drives was inaccessible, showed IO errors in "Capabilities" but was still showing as green. This is a remote server at work and i was accessing it via a pc using teamviewer, so i decided to reboot system. The drive appeared and i could access it no worries. As the parity corrections were written to disk and i could access the data on the drive, i re-ran a partity check to correct what i assumed to be errors. Check completed with another 20k errors which i hoped corrected the problem. To confirm that the errors were fixed i ran a 3rd check and was expecting it to come back with zero errors as per normal. Now though, the drive is red balled (or x now) and using parity. I can only hope that the drive was not re-inserted correctly, but i have reinserted it. The problem i now have is that i have a red balled drive and a parity that i cannot trust. This server was used for long term storage of videos and photos and the drive in question has data from 2008-2010. Due to cost, i only have a backup for the last 18 months, so cannot verify the data. My gut feeling after typing this all out is that the drive is ok and that i just need to rebuild the parity, but would love to hear others thoughts. BTW typing it out like this does allow you to think about it logically.
  3. So in a nut shell, not possible and probably never gonna be. I have told her before not to power it off, but i think i may have to look at better cooling options as i guarantee its gonna happen again. Cheers all.
  4. Hi all, Is there a way to disable the parity check after an unclean shutdown? The reason for this is that i have my server in my living room as i live in a small flat and due to the noise of the fans in my 5in3 hdd cases i replaced them with quieter ones. While these fan do a fine job of keeps temperatures under control in general use, during a parity check i have to put a desk fan in front of the server or the drives rapidly heat up. A few days ago i came home to find out that my girl friend has turned the server on and off at the plug socket as she was having problems watching media from it, i checked the drives and they were at 45c. If there is not currently a way to do this i think it would be a good idea to be able to disable this check until a more appropriate time, but to ensure it is not ignored, maybe start the server with the drives in maintenance mode so no more changes can be made to disrupt the file system. 5. i really wish i had not installed my usb stick inside the case now :'(
  6. Hi all, I purchased a motherboard bundle of eBay for my server (P5GC-MX/1333 with Pentium Dual CPU E2180) and all works fine, however if i add a hard drive i have to modify the boot order in the bios as it tries to boot from a HDD as opposed the the USB key. This is not a major issue for me but i need to setup a new build for my place of work and would like to avoid this, can anyone give me an idea why this might happen or what i need to look for in a new mobo? Cheers Lloyd
  7. I dont keep my server on all the time and if i want to power it off i have to boot my pc to do it, and i just thought a button would be cool.
  8. I did a search but could find nothing similar, I was wondering if it is possible to have a few buttons on the case that could be used to stop / start the array? What would be really cool is to get a LED switch and use the colour to indicate its current status. Any ideas?
  9. All the drives not in the array are in the proccess of being precleared so hopefully that should give the drive chance to reassign them
  10. Hi Joe There is a smart report attached to my initial post if this helps. It shows 20 Reported_Uncorrected, which i assume is the same. Lloyd
  11. Hi, the errors all occured during a parity check i will use a different sata cable just to make sure Error 12 occurred at disk power-on lifetime: 183 hours (7 days + 15 hours) When the command that caused the error occurred, the device was active or idle. After command completion occurred, registers were: ER ST SC SN CL CH DH -- -- -- -- -- -- -- 40 51 00 ff ff ff 0f Error: UNC at LBA = 0x0fffffff = 268435455 Commands leading to the command that caused the error were: CR FR SC SN CL CH DH DC Powered_Up_Time Command/Feature_Name -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- ---------------- -------------------- 25 00 00 ff ff ff ef 00 08:09:26.770 READ DMA EXT 27 00 00 00 00 00 e0 00 08:09:26.769 READ NATIVE MAX ADDRESS EXT ec 00 00 00 00 00 a0 00 08:09:26.745 IDENTIFY DEVICE ef 03 46 00 00 00 a0 00 08:09:26.726 SET FEATURES [set transfer mode] 27 00 00 00 00 00 e0 00 08:09:26.705 READ NATIVE MAX ADDRESS EXT
  12. Hi Just built my first sever after getting annoyed by my drobo. I brought 2 new 3tb drives and precleared them once each, but after looking at the SMART status i am rather worried. I have attached a screen grab of what i am seeing and SMART reports. I think my parity drive is not well, is this right? Lloyd Parity.txt Disk1.txt
  13. Cheers i did contact tech support and they said "In theory, the PCIeX16 slot can be compatible with PCIex8 devices, but as you see, there is no test report about the device you mentioned on the motherboard, we could not guarantee that it would be compatible on the motherboard well in actual operation. But if now you have the card, you can have a test directly." I will ask at the asus forums as google aint helped so far :-(
