  1. If you run 7200rpm drives and ditch the parity drive you can obtain 70-80 MB/s write speeds! At least that is what I was getting while my parity was in the crapper, and I was awaiting the new one. Not recommended though!
  2. Make a backup of the Key (If you have the plus, or pro version.) your share and user settings/folder, then once you know you have everything that you must have to keep all your current settings, reformat the flash drive to start over. (Taking a screen shot of the webgui with the drive ID,s is a huge help, unless you already have that.) Any and all add ons can be added one by one once you have everything ironed out. (Don't save the add ons, as one of those may be the problem.) This has saved my system a couple times! Good luck!
  3. I think that those using/adding 500GB drives in the UnRaid server is a band-aid. Not only are the undersized when comparing them to the new offerings, they are slower more times then not, use more power, and are more then likely reused from other much older builds, so they will most likely not have much life left. When I built my second UnRaid server, I used 1TB, 1.5TB, and 2TB drives that I reused from my old UnRaid server. 3 of the 5 1.5TB, all 3 of the 1TB, and 1 of the 2TB drives have failed. I am not saying to toss them, but be prepared to upgrade to new ones sooner then later.
  4. Not at all familiar with Mac, but this is very much in line with everything I have seen on Windows, and Linux machines with HHD's. Now SSD's is a whole different ball game, they delete 5-10 times quicker.
  5. So are you saying that Tom doen't want to sell the Plus version? If that's the case, it should be done away with. I have the Pro version, (actually 2) And I am with those that would like to see the plus version to have more support. I believe that if the Pro version gets bumped to 24 drives, that the Plus version should go to 12. (I think that half the drive count is about right, so at the current 20 drive Pro, it should be 10 drives for the Plus.)
  6. I was not trying to get help, just letting a fellow UnRaid user know they were not alone in that problem, there for, I did not need to take the time and try to get a log. I simply went back to a betea that I knew worked. And now after nearly 4 days, not a single hicup. So I make the right choice for my needs. This is where posting your syslog is key. The hardware list helps, too. If the system died completely before you could capture anything then post what you can from the next boot. Depending on the problem you'll likely get tips on how to capture enough from the crash to take the next step. Without a completely obvious known problem or a syslog, everyone has to guess.
  7. I have no add ons whatsoever. Just the basic UnRaid This is the behavior I saw as well, before disabling all packages. Since then, since RC3, it has been solid from first boot and for multiple TB of copies. Broken record I know, but most plug-ins won't be updated until Final so it's best to take them out of the testing equation. If some of them are critical to you but you aren't up to solving or working around problems yourself then it would seem best to stick with a release that works with your goodies. No? Edit: I'm not ignoring the part where shrimpyaab said they disabled plugins, or that possibly you meant the same, but without more details and a syslog it's hard to get any value from the posts.
  8. Same with my system! I went back to B14. When running RC3 everything would run perfectly for 2-3 days, then nothing, no web interface, no folders, and not even telnet.
  9. Take a look at my sig. I also run win 7 on all 7 HTPC's in my home. I know it's early, but so far RC3 is 100% rock solid with my setup! Good luck in whatever route you take.
  10. Just wanted to add to this thread! I went ahead and jumped on board the RC3 bandwagon. Once I found the problem was a dieing HHD, I removed it, now all is working better then ever. So I want to be added to the happy camper list!
  11. Thanks Joe, I had totally forgotten about that. Now maybe I can get parity to run and complete!
  12. One of the spare drives was going bad, and I didn't see any indications in the syslog. I happened to be doing laundry near the server when I was restarting it for the humteenth time in just a few days, when I heard a drive making the dreaded sound of the bearing going bad. I was able to pinpoint it by placing my hand on each front drive plate until I found the one. I removed it, rebooted, then went to new config, and after about 29 hours I had Parity Sync, and check Parity complete with no errors. (My server has 15 drives now for a total of 36.5TB, with 17.8TB used. More than 550,000,000 reads, and 11,600,000+ writes, that is a bunch!) I have tried parity sync running B14, RC1, and RC2, using a new 3TB 7200 rpm drive, I furthest I have seen it get before becoming unresponsive was this last time at about 34%. I have tried with absolutly no addons, and with addons. I thought it was because some files on disk 5 where I had Plex, (There were some 2000+ files that would not delete) I finaly was able to delete the files from plex, and then parity was humming along nicely, then bam, i lost user shares, and webgui, I have telnet running, but I don't know what I should be looking at, and what it means. Here is a snipit of the log. using ehci_hcd May 11 04:30:52 The_Matrix kernel: generic-usb 0003:0764:0501.17E8: hiddev0,hidraw2: USB HID v1.10 Device [CPS CP550HG] on usb-0000:00:1d.0-1.1/input0 May 11 04:31:13 The_Matrix kernel: usb 2-1.1: USB disconnect, device number 45 May 11 04:31:14 The_Matrix kernel: usb 2-1.1: new low-speed USB device number 46 using ehci_hcd May 11 04:31:14 The_Matrix kernel: generic-usb 0003:0764:0501.17E9: hiddev0,hidraw2: USB HID v1.10 Device [CPS CP550HG] on usb-0000:00:1d.0-1.1/input0 May 11 04:31:35 The_Matrix kernel: usb 2-1.1: USB disconnect, device number 46 May 11 04:31:36 The_Matrix kernel: usb 2-1.1: new low-speed USB device number 47 using ehci_hcd May 11 04:31:36 The_Matrix kernel: generic-usb 0003:0764:0501.17EA: hiddev0,hidraw2: USB HID v1.10 Device [CPS CP550HG] on usb-0000:00:1d.0-1.1/input0 May 11 04:31:57 The_Matrix kernel: usb 2-1.1: USB disconnect, device number 47 May 11 04:31:58 The_Matrix kernel: usb 2-1.1: new low-speed USB device number 48 using ehci_hcd May 11 04:31:58 The_Matrix kernel: generic-usb 0003:0764:0501.17EB: hiddev0,hidraw2: USB HID v1.10 Device [CPS CP550HG] on usb-0000:00:1d.0-1.1/input0 May 11 04:32:19 The_Matrix kernel: usb 2-1.1: USB disconnect, device number 48 May 11 04:32:20 The_Matrix kernel: usb 2-1.1: new low-speed USB device number 49 using ehci_hcd May 11 04:32:20 The_Matrix kernel: generic-usb 0003:0764:0501.17EC: hiddev0,hidraw2: USB HID v1.10 Device [CPS CP550HG] on usb-0000:00:1d.0-1.1/input0 May 11 04:32:40 The_Matrix kernel: usb 2-1.1: USB disconnect, device number 49 May 11 04:32:42 The_Matrix kernel: usb 2-1.1: new low-speed USB device number 50 using ehci_hcd May 11 04:32:42 The_Matrix kernel: generic-usb 0003:0764:0501.17ED: hiddev0,hidraw2: USB HID v1.10 Device [CPS CP550HG] on usb-0000:00:1d.0-1.1/input0 May 11 04:33:03 The_Matrix kernel: usb 2-1.1: USB disconnect, device number 50 May 11 04:33:04 The_Matrix kernel: usb 2-1.1: new low-speed USB device number 51 using ehci_hcd May 11 04:33:04 The_Matrix kernel: generic-usb 0003:0764:0501.17EE: hiddev0,hidraw2: USB HID v1.10 Device [CPS CP550HG] on usb-0000:00:1d.0-1.1/input0 May 11 04:33:25 The_Matrix kernel: usb 2-1.1: USB disconnect, device number 51 May 11 04:33:26 The_Matrix kernel: usb 2-1.1: new low-speed USB device number 52 using ehci_hcd May 11 04:33:26 The_Matrix kernel: generic-usb 0003:0764:0501.17EF: hiddev0,hidraw2: USB HID v1.10 Device [CPS CP550HG] on usb-0000:00:1d.0-1.1/input0 May 11 04:33:47 The_Matrix kernel: usb 2-1.1: USB disconnect, device number 52 May 11 04:33:48 The_Matrix kernel: usb 2-1.1: new low-speed USB device number 53 using ehci_hcd May 11 04:33:48 The_Matrix kernel: generic-usb 0003:0764:0501.17F0: hiddev0,hidraw2: USB HID v1.10 Device [CPS CP550HG] on usb-0000:00:1d.0-1.1/input0 By the way, the only USB device conected to the server, it the UnRaid flash drive. I don't want to force a reboot yet, because I am not 100% sure parity is no longer running.
  13. I understand how important a log can be in tracking down issues. But as I stated the system was completely unresponsive. (As in frozen!) No telnet, no web page, no folder, nothing! In hindsight, I should have gotten a log yesterday when I first noticed it was getting very slugish. I can't help you without at least a system log and without a description of what plugins you might be using. I *never* see this kind of behavior on any test server; if fact, I've never seen this behavior *ever* on any test server. Report "it doesn't work" without any kind of information is pointless. I'd say 99% of all problems reported I've *never* seen before, and most of the time, the only way I can fix the issue is to be able to recreate it. Sorry, I don't mean to be picking on you in particular.
  14. I had to revert back to RC1! As RC2 started acting just like B12, and B13. After a little while the server would become slower, and in no time (Like maybe 5 minutes or less) it would become completely unresponsive. (Both webgui, and folders.) The first time, it lasted almost 2 days, but yesterday I had to force a restart, then last night I recieved about 20 text messages from my kids letting me know they were getting mad because they couldn't watch anything. When I got home from work this morning I reverted back to RC1, so now its a wait and see game. If this doesn't work, I'll have no choice but go back another step to B14. (That one is not perfect, but it did run more then 5 months with just small issues and problems.
  15. I have disabled all the addons, because I was seeing errors while running Parity sync, and once it does that it don't give options to change anything, it just stops, and you don't know until F5 is hit. It was stopping somewhere after 6%, after removing all addons, it went to atleast 20%. What can I do to correct this problem? I am thinking it may have something to do with Plex, as I see a lot of info coming up on disc 5. (That is where I HAD Plex. ) I have long sense gotten rid of Plex, but I do not seem to have the correct permissions to delete some 2,000+ files and the master folder. log_may_6.zip
  16. Thank you Joe, I tried your sugestion, and was coming back with 3 root root 2012-5-5 01:53 /ls -ld /mnt/disk5/ or something simalir, and it still would not mount, so I disabled simple features, and it mounted right up after a reboot. But I now have Parity running for the first time in weeks. (It is early in the Parity check, but it is running very nicely at 81.83 MB/Sec with 5% complete.) Thank you so very much Joe.
  17. Thanks! I forgot to mention that I have tried the drive in question in all the empty slots, and even move some of the dives to try it in those slots as well. The drive shows up fine, and allows to me add it the the server, but when I try to bring the array on line (Mount the drives) the array will not start.
  18. I don't think it is UnRaid, but the drive may not be seated good. Once in a while when I reboot the server, one of the drives act just like that, and as soon as I remove it, and reseat it, upon refreshing the browser, it comes on line. By the way, for the first time since 4.5 I can now stop the array, and start it without the system crashing. So far all is well with the exception of my parity drive not wanting to mount, but this is not an RC5 issue . I think it has something to do with the drive but don't know where to look. (I posted the log in the RC1 thread incase someone wants to take a look at it.)
  19. Tom, here is the system log for my server. It is huge, so to help you a little, the information should be somewhere around the 20:00 hours mark, give or take a minute. Thanks for any help you can give. I just upgraded to RC2 a little while ago, and still no luck getting the drive to mount. The drive in question is (sdn) Need to see the system log. UnRaid_Log.zip
  20. I have an issue, but do not believe it is UnRaid related. My Parity drive died on my, I was able to get it replace, (They sent a remanufactured one in its place.) The drive seams fine in every way, but when I add it to the server, I can NOT get the server to start, it just goes back to the unmounted drives status. As soon as I remove it, the drives will mount just fine. (I am running 5 RC1, and I tried mounting the drive as a data drive as well, and also tried B14.) I just ordered 3 new 3TB 7200 rpm drives so hopefully I don't ever run into this issue again. Right now I have 6200 movies, 33000 tv episodes, 21000 songs, and 20000 Karaoke songs, plus lots of other stuff unprotected. Is there a trick I can try to get this drive to work? I thought maybe the drive size was reduced when it was remanufactured, but that wouldn't stop it from working as a date drive.

Up until recently I recommended UnRaid to all my friends that were looking for large storage servers for their media collection. However with many now moving to 3TB drives, and the lack of confidence in UnRaid's stability, as well as not knowing if or when these deficiencies will be addressed I no longer tell them about UnRaid. I simply tell them, their guess is as good as mine. (Not a good answer, but I don't want to be the one responsible for them losing years and years worth of media collecting.) I am running two servers due to the fact I can not get Parity to run correctly on any of the beta 5 releases. I would like to sell my old server, but until I see a drastic improvement in 5.0 releases, I have to keep it as a back up. (And it is quickly running out of storage space.) I am not going to abandon UnRaid, at least no time soon. But at the same time, I no longer have that wonderful sensation I once had knowing that my media collection was more secure with UnRaid! I will try not to complain so much, but that doesn't mean I am happy about things.

Seeing that you act as though you are above us, this is why we believe we have a right to question Tom's business practices. "How is unRAID licensed? The unRAID Server software is available under 3 different licenses: unRAID Server Basic - FREE! - 3 drives (2 data, 1 parity) unRAID Server Plus - $69/$99(for 2 keys) - 6 drives (5 data, 1 parity, 1 cache) unRAID Server Pro - $119/$149(for 2 keys) - 22 drives (20 data, 1 parity, 1 cache) They can be purchased here. Plus key(s) can be upgraded to Pro key(s) for $59. Licenses include all future upgrades, see unRAID Licensing Questions Answered. The license is controlled by a key file for the Plus and Pro versions, which is tied to a unique GUID (Globally Unique IDentifier) associated with your unRAID flash drive. The unRAID software is identical with each license, only the features and drives are limited with the Plus and Basic versions. See the next question for a table of the differences. The free Basic version is both a fully working 3 drive system, and a freely available demonstration version, that can easily be set up by downloading the latest software (downloads), and preparing a bootable USB flash drive (USB Flash Drive Preparation). There is no registration necessary. If you decide later to purchase a Plus or Pro license, just copy the license file to your unRAID flash drive and reboot, and the full capabilities and drives of the purchased license will then be available. Apart from the limit on the maximum number of drives, the array is the same under all licenses. No conversion of data or software is necessary. " You may want to pay extra close attention to this "Licenses include all future upgrades" So the way I see it, I have paid for upgrades, and am not asking for anything for free. If I pay Microsoft, or Apple for all future upgrades, then yes they had better make good, or I will use my RIGHT to complain in order to get what I have paid for.
  23. I agree that it is not arrogance, but more likely a lack of commitment, and focus! Tom did state that 5 final would most likely be released by months end, that was February, he also stated he would give us weekly updates, so we could know where things stand. And back in October Tom stated that 5.0 final should be released very soon. arrogant is a strong, and wrong, word for this. He has posted that he was moving. He has posted a while back that he has other responsibilities. He logs on fairly often and handles support requests. It's clear that he could use more help. However, I don't think he's arrogant in how unRAID updates are being handled. I'll ask you kindly to refrain from that sort of assumption in public and if you continue to have this feeling, address it to Tom directly. Believe me, we would all like to have more frequent updates as to the direction and status of unRAID.
  24. So tomorrow will be day 100 since the last beta, (That was called b14, but in reality it was more like b21 or so! beta 8 had something like 5 different beta releases, and many others had 2+ each) Are we ever going to see a final release? 2 years in beta with 20+ releases is not good at all!
  25. Why not just go to flash/config there you will find the pro key, save the key in a safe place then the flash drive can be formatted everything reinstalled, place a copy of the pro key back in the new config folder, and all is good. why not just delete the entire USB drive (ie, format) after making a backup and treat it as a fresh install?
