  1. Thanks everybody. This was exactly the conversation I was hoping for. Going with a 7200 drive of normal make up, at least until I can get a 4TB SSD ;-)
  2. It's time for an upgrade on the system, and I was window shopping at newegg and found this Seagate Hybrid Drive ST4000DX001. Anybody have any thoughts on the potential use of this drive as a parity drive? I would think it would increase initial write speeds (on files smaller than 7-8GB) without impacting anything else. Can't think of drawbacks, so I am asking the forums.....
  3. Just for the record, not frustrated here. BUT, seriously looking forward to more improvements and playing with all the new toys that LT is putting together. Thanks to the team for making my server better than my friends server (Geeks Thanksgiving )
  4. I'm following this, as it —potentially—exactly what I want. The first time I have any time free I will take a look at what I can figure out and post. If anyone else is working on this, post what does and doesn't work please so that we can learn from each other's efforts.
  5. I cannot figure out how to set up the config file for upsboards. I need some help. I installed the docker, and attempted to edit the config file, but the server is not running (or I'm not accessing it properly). I really need someone to ELI5, please.
  6. Does anyone have any suggestions for a way to monitor my system hardware? I am thinking of something that will show me System Temps, fan speeds, disk use etc. Just curious and no idea where to start. (Trying google-fu)
  7. I made that same upgrade, but only read the stuff on the OP for b8, so I lost all my templates (I followed the instructions but when I tried to copy them something went wrong). However, I made a screenshot of my port mappings and share assignments before I upgraded and just recreated from the stock templates. If you're not running too many, that might work....

    AFP update

Now I'm even more ready for b10!!!
  9. I am upgrading from b6 to b9, having never installed 7 or 8 (never been so glad to be behind). Other than moving docker stuff around according to the b8 instructions, is there anything else special I need to do?
  10. I was wondering, with new systems, faster SATA and faster drives what parity check speeds were like for other people. In order to gauge whether or not my system was running good bad or indifferent, I thought I would ask around. For the record: my last parity check today, running 6.b6 on the system below, Duration: 8 hours, 40 minutes, 1 second. Average speed: 96.2 MB/sec
  11. Now that the docker is upgraded, how do I get it on my system? Just click the update button on my docker page?
  12. Before I start mucking about in configuration files, are there any unRAID specific changes to to the ssh server related to users being able to access? And, on a similar note, is there a way to grant a user access to the console? I want to limit root access as much as possible.
  13. Thank you Justin and bjp999. I got it working. I used Justin's folder (I thought that would be the fix, thanks for making it easy to get). I also had to adjust the docker.cfg since I am also using Xen, but everything seems to be working at this point. 8)
  14. EDIT: Rewritten to make the problem clearer. I have created a working docker for both sabnzbd and sickbeard. They both are functional and sickbeard can send a nzb to sabnzbd. However, the normal setup process to have sabnzbd send the file back to sickbeard for post-processing involves copying a folder from the sickbeard install to the sabnzbd install folder (the AutoProcessTV folder). I have done this a dozen times setting this up in a VM, but in Docker, I am lost. Has anyone set these two up in separate docker containers and made them work? How do I do it?
  15. Made a dumb mistake - need help fixing it I was moving some files between array disks (i.e. Disk1 to Disk5) because I had waited too long to add a new drive and the old ones were all at 85-90+% so I wanted to balance things out. Well, when I was moving things about in Midnight Commander, I might have used copy instead of move out of habit. So I looked a fast way to check for duplicate files between directories. EDIT/UPDATE: Since I was moving whole directories I tried this and it is working way better: But I came across a utility, fdupes, which looks to be more use specific. Has anyone installed that on unraid? Other options also welcome...
  16. Running Xenserver, with unRAID as VM, no plugins on unRAID. Once beta 6 comes out, will switch to unRAID as host, but still no plug-ins.
  17. I am using that board and CPU in my unit, with a bit more RAM and PSU wattage to overbuild. I was thinking that I might add a video card at some point so I wanted the headroom on the PSU. All that aside, the board and CPU are top notch values. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  18. That gets me to the "box" I set up port forwarding to on the router. Then from that box I ssh into the other "boxes"? I am having Inception headaches, but I am following this correctly? Could I set up a port-forwarding/tunneling from/through the gateway box to use VPN into the Windows box in the same manner? Yep. The downloader needs full time VPN; the Plex box is susceptible to all kinds of failures so it needs to be walled off so as not to cause trouble or have trouble caused to it; the PVR box is the catchall box. I also have ridiculously overbuilt my server so I've got plenty of resources to go around, so I don't notice much. Once I switch to unraid-6 I will probably trim things down a bit.
  19. I would love to be able to access my server from the office, and to check on my VM's as well. I am trying to figure out how to create an ssh tunnel into the network so I can do that but I am having difficulty. Here is my setup: Cable Modem: 20MBdown/5MBup Apple AirPortExtreme Router Unraid Box: Running XenServer 6.2 (until I have a weekend to switch everything to XenUnRaid6b4) VMs: Unraid 5.4, three running Ubuntu 12.04-server (Plex, downloader, sick beard), one Windows 7 From inside the house I ssh into each of the boxes for maintenance, moving files via mc, etc. Right now, the box doesn't have any graphic output (waiting on Unraid6 before doing graphic pass-through). I am looking for a way to use ssh to get into the home network safely. I was thinking about creating a VM that would serve as a gatekeeper and only it would be exposed to the outside world, set up a very strong certificate based login, and connect to the rest of network from there. But how to make that actually work is a little beyond me at this point. If anyone can point me to a guide I have missed when google-dummy-searching I would appreciate it. Tips and pointers also very much appreciated too. Thanks. UPDATE: I totally figured this out. I set up one VM and port forwarded a random, rarely used port to 22 (the ssh) port on the Router. From there I set up certificate based authorization to login in to that VM. On my laptop, I set up connections to sick beard, sabnzbd+, and unraid's control panels using very simple tunneling. I set up aliases (a nice bonus learning point) so that now when I am at work, I type sickb_remote in terminal and then localhost:14001 in my web browser, and automagically I can see what my server is doing from anywhere, and it's all nice and secure. I still have to set up file sharing from a distance, but that should be pretty easy. If anyone finds this and wants step by step instructions, let me know and I will post them here for everybody.
  20. I am reading this thread with a lot of interest. I have been running Plex through a Roku3, and have been pretty happy with it. Now, I want to add the ability to play Blu-rays off the server. I want to maintain menus and extras while maintaining full visual and audio quality too. I am off to research Dunes, NUCs, and Openelec. But I would welcome any advice. 21. If you wanted to upgrade/test unRaid 6.x-b as a domU in Xenserver, would I need to do anything more that upgrade the usb drive copy of bzroot etc.?
  22. I just went through the process of installing Xenserver on my new build, and installing VM's to do all my tasks that used to be plugins on unraid, while running unraid as a VM itself on the system. There was quite a learning curve (I was a linux noob) but it all works really well now. Not having to worry about my apps becoming lost (ahem, Transmission as a plugin was a FEW versions behind), and being able to try something out without worrying about crashing my mission critical file-server-system make up for all of the effort. As a hobbyist that built a unraid because I wanted to have some control over what went into my system, being virtual extends that control to my software, and I like that a lot. Making unraid the dom0 is the best idea I've heard for the movement and development of the product, even it means reworking all of the things I just did setting up my system. Tom, I am on board with you and can't wait to help in any way I can to make it easier for the even noobier users than me.
  23. When the Forum is redone (ahem), I will join in this effort. This is outside my skill set, but I will test and help where I can. I will definitely help draft guides.
  24. I am new to virtualization, so someone please explain to me (and other noobs) what changes in 6.X will mean to the setup I'm running now. I am running XenServer 6.2 (following grumpybutfun's incredibly excellent guide) with Unraid as a VM amongst several others. Will Unraid become a dom0, or just a better behaved domU? Will I have to switch from Xen to KVM (which will be easy/difficult??) I really am excited about the upgrade and really, really want to play with it. Let's say I wanted to install it, but maintain the current setup JIC, what's the best way. So many questions, I'm like a six year old who just got a new toy made for eight year olds. How does it work, when can I play, is it my turn yet ;-)
  25. I am running 5.0.4. I was mounting the shares on the clients during boot up with a fstab entry, but after looking around the internet for help with "Stale NFS file handle" I came to the realization that using NFS may be a poor solution given my setup. NFS shares apparently fail when one user changes the directory structure on the server while another user is connected to the share. I am not sure how this isn't a bigger problem for people (seems like it would be kind of huge). It could be that I just didn't have the NFS shares properly setup. In any case, I solved the problem another way. I installed Samba on the clients and share the unraid shares through samba instead of NFS. Problem solved. Plex doesn't forget where things are, and all appears to work correctly now. Unless someone tells me that under no circumstances should I use Samba, I am calling this case closed.
