  1. Interesting point. I'm not planning to do a lot of tinkering once everything is up and running, but my initial plan actually was to start with a small number of drives and then add more drives whenever needed. That would, however, mean a lot of re-cabling. What you write makes me think: - should I rather build the whole server at once ... with hotswap bays ... without hotswap bays - or can I actually add drives whenever needed and should I then do it ... with hotswap bays ... without hotswap bays What's the best strategy? 2. Well that's interesting. I have a Digital Devices DuoFlex CT PCIe DVB-C TV Card in my HTPC. Do you know how many channels I could watch/record simultaneously with that one? I always thought I can only watch OR record at the same time but not both... Gesendet von iPhone mit Tapatalk
  3. Are there any 5x3 cages without a backplane? I read that backplanes increase risk of a failure and I actually only need them to accommodate all the drives but not for any hot swapping. So since my cage can accommodate 15 drives in three 5x3 cages with a backplane, it should be able to accommodate the same number of drives without backplanes, right? Any suggestions? Case is a Rosewill RSV-L4000 https://m.newegg.com/Product/index?itemnumber=N82E16811147155
  4. Great, very useful your answers! Any opinions regarding whether I should go for: Intel Xeon E3-1275 v5 @ 3.60GHz, passmark 10,256 or Intel Core i7-6700 @ 3.40GHz, passmark 9,965 ? Leaning towards the Xeon, but not sure.. Gesendet von iPhone mit Tapatalk
  5. So I am thinking about to get either: Intel Xeon E3-1275 v5 @ 3.60GHz, passmark 10,256 Intel Core i7-6700 @ 3.40GHz, passmark 9,965 Both would be in my target price range (though I don't have a budget but am willing to spend as much money as needed without overpaying/overkilling), come with VT-x and VT-d, have onboard graphics, and are quite newer generation models. I still don't understand: - what passmark I should be looking for - how much GHz ich should be looking for - how many cores I need - whether ECC RAM support is needed Any opinions?
  6. Thanks for your replies. No, I likely won't work and transcode or game at the same time. I was thinking about the (still rare) scenario where I want to take a small break from work and play a game. In that case, could both VMs (the work VM and the gaming VM) keep running even with only four cores? Same for the other applications mentioned above. Anyhow, what CPU do you recommend for my situation? Would the i7-6700 work? How about i7 vs. Xeon?
  7. Thinking about to build an unRaid machine that should replace/serve both: - desktops/working (office software, web development, iOS development on MacOS VM) - gaming (preferably all new games at max settings on an 1080p plasma) - media/HTPC - owncloud - Plex Server How much horsepower (CPU/GHz/Cores) would I need if: 1) I want to run two VMs: desktop/work + gaming simultaneously? 2) everything runs separately or only desktop/work + media/HTPC together? Currently thinking of a 4-core or 6-core i7 CPU (reason for a 6-core so that I'd have 4 cores for gaming and 2 cores for everything else).
  8. I'm not a Steam-expert; to be honest, I just had to google what Steam In-Home-Straming is. But if I understand it correctly, I still would need to have one high performance gaming machine which then streams to other (lower power) machines, correct? So wouldn't my hardware requirements be the same? Or do you mean I could keep my HTPC just stream the games to it?
  9. Thanks! Quick questions: - What GPU did you go for? Can't find it in your parts list. - Any experience running both media/games and a Windows/MacOS VM simultaneously? I understand I need 4 cores for gaming, so considering a 6-8 cores CPU just in case I want to run both simultaneously (i.e. playing a game on the plasma while doing work on another monitor). On the other hand, as this won't happen often, could save some money. On a more general note: - i7 vs. Xeon: Any thoughts? - How many cores, mHz, and RAM do I need for what I want to do? 10. How are you achieving 8x simultaneous TV streams with only two TV tuner cards?
  11. I currently have a small HTCP running Kodi on Windows 7. Id like to add gaming to it, ideally being able to run all new games on 1080p with best performance and settings. I also need storage space for media and I'm interested in trying out other things like webserver, virtualizing MacOS, owncloud etc. What would be the best setup and required hardware using unRaid? Can an unRaid machine run games and serve them to my HTPC? Or would I have to replace my HTPC, run everything including Kodi from unRaid and connect it directly to my plasma using a super-long HDMI cable? Thanks!
  12. Is it possible and does it make sense at all to virtualize games? I'm asking because I want to play games on my HTPC but would have to add a gaming dGPU, replace my PicoPSU with a 450 W PSU and possibly replace my i3 with an i5. At the same time I'm planing to build an unraid server and have to buy hardware for it which (at least if I want virtualization capabilities) seems to be powerful enough for playing games (except the dGPU) so I thought I can save some money by only having one powerful machine and let everything run on that machine.
  13. I have attached photos of the case I will be using. AFAIK it must be a Norco case under a different brand but I didn't find the exact Norco model on their website; the Norco which comes closest is the RPC-450/470. However, my case doesn't have rear ventilation holes (it also doesn't have ventilation holes on top which the Norco case dosn't have either). So I am wondering how I should organize airflow and fans in this case. There will be 120mm fans in front where the HDDs will be sitting (15 drives using three 5x3 cages, less drives in the beginning using the standard HDD cages). So I would need rear fans pulling out the air. Is the only way to cut out some steel (where the Norco case has it's rear ventilation holes)?
  14. Just curious, what is this: (Sorry if it's a stupid question - I'm rather new to this and it sounds like it could be an interesting feature I want to add to my build too )
  15. What do you think about the Corsair 850HX modular PSU? I found a good deal on eBay but am not sure if it's a good PSU and if it's too much power (I read somewhere that 550W is enough for unRAID).
