  1. Hi! Right now i have a 6600k with 16gb ddr4 ruining at 2133 ( this board and cpu from my previous build and bios never liked xmp ), nvidia 770, 2x8TB seagate nas drives, 1x512gb ssd, 1x128gb ssd, haf x Case, 550watt psu roswell, 1x4tb wd red, 1x2tb hd. What i need advice on is my moms pc is acting up lately and been slowing down and acting very weird dropping wifi constantly lately. I think some hardware might be failing as it is a fx 6300 and really showing its age. I needed more cores for my server and a 6600k would be a great upgrade for her so my though was to get a cpu, mobo combo under 150 and get 2 more ddr4 sticks for it. My question is I was hoping to find a cpu motherboard combo that does not pull much more power then 6600k or around same power or less if possible while being on the cheaper side of under 150$ if I can for that. This might be a impossible question because of price but I was hoping some would have some suggestion. I did find looking around local area and ebay these cpus with motherboards under my price. would any of these work or does anyone have any sugestions for better. List of cpu / mobo i have found under 150$ ( i did find one that sold fast a good deal on ryzen 2700x but i know linux can have issues with ryzen, at least that is what i heard ) ASUS X99-A II Intel LGA 2011-V3 , i7-5930k EVGA 151-HE-E999-KR , Xeon E5-1650v3 asus p10s 1151 ATX workstation motherboard , Xeon E3-1230v6 X99 Motherboard LGA 2011-3 , Xeon E5 2670 V3 Ty for any advice you can give. P.S. Title says switching, been using windows 10 pro with plex, and game servers running on it. My plan for this server is file server with jellyfin, and a few game servers that i can start and stop when friends want to play certain games like vahiem, satisfactory and etc.
  2. I know specific questions would do better and i know mine are all over the place sorry about that. I forgot to mention that all the hard drives are full and the 8 tb has 3tbs used on it. That is the reason i would need to buy another 8tb for parity and can't start off with it :(. I could wait to start building / changing over to unraid till i have 200$ saved. That would be enough for 8 tb nas drive and basic license for unraid. I do want parity for sure and would like to eventually have 2 drive parity as i build up over time. I will test the hard disk with that though so ty for that
  3. I do not know how long this will be but I will try to keep it as short as I can. I go by Cminion and been working on pcs since i was 14 years old so 25 years ago. My back went out when I was 21 and had major mental issues in my teens to that got worse over time. I wanted to be a network engineer but life sometimes has other plans for us and My back a long with mental stuff ( runs in family , the mental ) got worse and took away my ability to even work. I live with family now that helps me while I fight for disability. I have been fighting for disability for 12 years now, and yes I know that is a long time and I have had a lawyer entire time. I have not won yet because judges keep twisting words and looking past what doctors are saying. Long story short I won at a federal level a year ago because the judge said the local judges where not listening to my doctors at all. Anyways that is not what this is about but I wanted to share this so you would understand my situation so you can understand my questions and where I am coming from. Fyi I have learned to accept the hell I was given and I wish I could work I have learned to accept it will probably never happen. This is where my questions come into place so I hope if you read this far you are willing to help. Here is what I have right now and that is a amd fx 8250 with 16gb ddr3 and a 770 in it as my server. I have a 8tb I just got a good deal on, 4tb and a 2tb. The case it is in now can only hold 3 hard drives but i can move it to my old full tower case I have had for 10+ years the Haf X. I have 2 other 1 tb drives sitting around to and a 128 mb ssd in that system. I tried to run linux server for awhile but getting my game server for me and my friends ( when I can sit up and play, I have to take lots of breaks due to lots of pain ). Right now it is just basic windows 10 w ith plex running on it and team viewer running on it with a hdmi dummy connector in so i do not have to have monitor plugged in. My ultimate goal would be to have like 5 8tb drives and 1 ssd with one of the 8tb being parity on unraid ( i think it fits what I want best ). I want to be able to torrent from that server, vm to test torrents for virus and etc. I want a plex server and of course small game server as in me and my friends ever so often so maybe 6 people at most for a few hours at a time. My pc so far can do the game and plex but it is just to basic for me and I would love to get more into doing server stuff as i always wanted to. Some other things i would need this server for is I have personal stuff like youtube videos ( montages I make for fun every so often ) and other things like my logo and etc to back up to this and if possible to set the server to back up when i edit stuff to a offsite place at least the most important stuff ( logo, intro, outtro, etc ). I would also like to have a share for each computer as I live with my family and sometimes have to hold onto files for them so it would be easier this way to download drivers, and save their most import stuff in those folders to. I also need to get a vpn working ( i have PIA vpn service atm ) so when surfing but also need it to bypass the vpn when others connect to use plex, or connect to game server or a way to turn it off when someone wants to connect. I do want parity but atm I only have 1 8tb and since you cant have a parity smaller than your biggest drive on unraid I will have to run no parity till I can at least afford one more 8tb drive. Another thing I was looking into and not sure if unraid can do it because i know there was a script for it for raspberry pi and that is the raspberry pi black hole ( ad blocker ). I am all for supporting people and their content but the youtube ads are getting out of hand and my brother who ironicly is also disabled, only has a certain income ( he won his disability, even though younger than me at 35, i am 39. ). Trying to save money from having to buy something since we have a very fixed and low income. I know this is pretty long so far so if you have stayed and read it this far I ty and hope you can help answer some of those questions above. There is a few left I had and that is mostly. the reason I think unraid would work for me is I have done research and unraids raid system seems best as I would probably get used drives or new ones on sale slowly over time as I build up. Once I win my disability I will get a big backpay and plan to upgrade my main rig and my server at that time ( for anyone that does not know you can not have over 2k$ in your bank account on SSI or they will start taking money away from you.. and max I will be able to get atm which goes up every year lately is 850$) , but till then i am gonna have to sale some stuff sitting around here and slowly save up to buy unraid and another 8tb drive. I was hoping to get some advice i guess on what apps maybe i should be looking at getting or do you all think unraid ( i think it will , but still asking ) would be a good fit for my situation / what i want to do with the server? I can show pictures of the server as i built it from old parts from a friend since i built his pc for free. I did not ask for parts he decided he did not want to try to sale them and just gave it to me several years ago. Ty for anything you can answer and sorry for the super long message but ty for anyone that reads it and answers. Also I would like to emphasize I am not looking for handouts, or sympathy because I am disabled, I do not bring that up to get that I only bring it up to let you understand my situation. Its hard because of my pain and mental can switch a lot but I try my best and want to earn things best i can even if it takes time. Ty again P.S. I am happy to be here and hope i can learn a lot from playing around with unraid. It seems like a great OS to have fun with especially for a home server.
