  1. @trurl - you are right. I didn't wait long enough to see the menu pop up. Doh! Thanks
  2. Upgraded to unRaid 6 series some time back and setup security. Wrote everything up including the passwords and put it away somewhere safe. Unfortunately, that safe place now eludes me. 😭 I have managed to get all passwords sorted - except one. I have a HTPC that accesses my server ( a user for it is setup in the unraid gui). I cannot remember or figure the password for this machine. Is there anyway to retrieve it? I have thought perhaps I could just delete that user from the unraid GUI and create a new one, but my worry is that my HTPC will no longer access the shares and it will lock me out. My HTPC runs xbmc (yes...an old version before it went KodiTV), but I don't remember how to setup user/password in xbmc's user shares should the need arise. Can I somehow save (backup) the current HTPC user to restore it? Is it possible to separate the WebGUI and actual machine console login? Seems that other posts have asked the same thing and you can't. Pity. And..final ask, 6.8.3 uses a new webgui login panel. How can I make my browser remember the credentials? Seems I'm a dunce and figured it out. It was different in 6.7.2. Many thanks
  3. @trurl - sorry about that. I just realised I grabbed the wrong name from your post. Apologies. I think I've done that myself (in fact, the router does it's setup using MAC address. My old router wasn't this flash in the interface. Both have been supplied by the ISP - meaning cheap😉
  4. Finally got it sorted out. @Constructor - you are correct. That would be the easy way, but I putty into the server and knowing the IP is a critical part. I found out the same thing had happened to our HTPC (also a static IP and running linux - so putty again) and couldn't connect at all. I tried everything. In the end I connected back to the old router and bingo - away we went. The new router has a different IP range, than the old one as I suspected. I even tried to re-route the old one to the new one but it wouldn't work. Tech is sometimes way too complicated - unless your a genius! Doesn't help that I'm an old-fogy with a brain and memory that isn't as sharp has it once was. While I write everything down, it's still a major effort to sort it all out again. Once I had the IP's all sorted out, the server was connected again to the internet - so I could upgrade via the gui. First time for me. Only thing that could be an issue - I have only a 512mb USB, so the old version takes up quite a lot of space. I'll see how the new version goes, then I'll backup and then delete the previous version off the USB drive. Hopefully this won't be an issue. Appreciate the comments. Thanks
  5. Tried for an upgrade this morning and it failed. There is NO button in the Tools>OS page (that shows as a button) I have to assume the Update OS Text at top left is it. I got a message as below. I am now suspicious that the server does not have connection to the internet. We have just changed our ISP - which meant a new router/modem. The new modem/router is registering the server (and I can login into it through the GUI), but there is NO IP address in the modem interface after the name of the server - but there is after the name of every other computer on the network. My server has a static IP, which I left unchanged, but I had to change the gateway. I am suspicious that the static IP is NOT in the correct IP range for the new modem/router (which uses a slightly different range ".178" VS ".1"). I have just found a panel in the new modem/router interface where you can add a new device with a static IP. One thing I find a little confusing is the new modem/router has both an IPv4 and a IPv6 setting for each device. Chewing my nails 🤔 Any comments before I do this.
  6. Thanks Squid. Really appreciate the insight.
  7. Greetings, How is everyone? Hope you're having good times. My server is currently running 6.7.2. I went to update the few plugins that I have (CA, cache_directories) and it would appear I can no longer do this from the GUI. It would seem that I need to be running 6.8.3. Is this the latest stable release? (This is what I've got ( "unRAIDServer-6.8.3-x86_64.zip") I have a very old server. I am wary of changing anything because I'm not in the position to build a new one. I worry about upgrading because of this and the fact my resources on the server aren't high. Do I need to keep upgrading?? It would seem I do because all the plugins change. I guess I should upgrade to 6.8.3. How is this done through the GUI (I've never done it through the GUI before). There doesn't appear to be anyway in the "Update OS" tab - or will it only show when the array is offline?? I saw this in a post "https://s3.amazonaws.com/dnld.lime-technology.com/stable/unRAIDServer.plg" to use the install plugin area. Will that work? I saw this "If you are running any 6.4 or later release, click 'Check for Updates' on the Tools/Update OS page." - but there is no button for this (perhaps need to stop the array?) Many thanks
  8. Hello there, Recently upgraded to 6.7.2 after being on V5 for far too many years. I only have four plugins - CA, CA Fix Problems, Cache Directories, Tips and Tweaks. Since the upgrade, I have had a strange problem. My HTPC keeps freezing for about 2 minutes within the first ten minutes of turning my server on. In the KodiTV log I was getting "WARNING: CDVDMessageQueue(audio)::Get - asked for new data packet, with nothing available." The unraid server log was showing nothing. Today, while writing new data to my server after turning it on, I noticed the same thing - the system would freeze after about ten minutes - and then become available again after approx 2 minutes. Looking at the unRAID log again I saw "Delaying execution of fix common problems scan for 10 minutes" It would appear the Fix Common Problems scan (after waiting 10 minutes) is the culprit. For some reason it completely locks my unRAID server system (and my HTPC) for the duration. Is there a reason it does this? Is there a way to delay the first scan even further (say to scan after 1 hour), which is a time I am not generally watching the server. At this point I think my best option is to remove the plugin to see if this issue will resolve. I thought I would ask questions first before I do so. Thanks muchly.
  9. The drive rebuild without incident and completed after 25 hours. The next step is the copy the data from my next small drive so it is free to upgrade to xfs.
  10. Thanks for this. That makes a lot of sense. So non-correcting it is. I've only started recently doing non-correcting as that has always been the default of unRAID. However, after reading many posts on the subject, I figured a non-correcting one was at times good practice. I was thinking that the new writes to the new disk needed to be checked (after the fact) to confirm that the writes were all successful. However, my thinking is probably suspect as I certainly don't know a lot about these things. If I think on it further, I guess unRAID will somehow tell me of failed writes - probably in the GUI??. I have never had one (touch wood) so I'm not sure of the process. @John_M - It is only as you've pointed this out that I realised I always thought they were the same thing. However, this is now clear to me they are not. Sometimes I realise how thick I really am! 😵 My rebuild is progressing - currently at 17.1% after 4h51m. Once this is done, I plan to copy data from a small drive, then rebuild that small drive to a larger drive using the XFS file system. This is a first for me - and even scarier than rebuilding a drive!! 😬 Really appreciate the input.
  11. When the rebuild is complete, should the parity sync after the rebuild be correcting or non-correcting?
  12. Greetings, Read the wiki and relative forum pages as it's been quite a while since I upgraded a drive. The wiki isn't absolutely clear on the exact procedure, but I followed some forum posts etc and things seemed to work. The main problem was the wiki never said anything about unassigning the old drive - or having to assign the replacement drive. Nor did it mention how long it would take the array to start once the "Start" array button was clicked. It took quite some time (many minutes) for the array to come on line. Now I'm a little confused that it says ParitySync / Data Rebuild. I think in V5 in just said "rebuild" next to the drive?? 1 - Parity sync run previously 2 - Backup Flash 3 - Install new drive 4 - Start server 5 - Assign replacement drive 6 - Start Array 7 - Watch as drive rebuilds Everything was looking great until it reached 0.6% - then the GUI stopped updating. The elapsed time is going up, but nothing out is increasing. Been sitting at 0.6% for over 15 minutes. Why?? Update: As I was typing this, the GUI suddenly updated and it is now at 1.5%. I'm new to 6.7.2 as I've only recently upgraded - so when weird things like this happen it makes me nervous. Any insights?? Need some hand holding 😳 An observation...I got a message from CA saying there was something up (red box), but I'm confident is that there is a new version available (hence the result of the message). However, I noticed the CPU was about 60-70 utilized as long as I was watching - now it's only 25-30%. Very strange. I wonder if CA was doing something in the background to cause this? I noticed the GUI had responded again by the time I had noticed the CPU utilization was down.
  13. Thanks for the comments about my CPU. I think I'll have to wait for a new server to start exploring the world of VM's. My upgrade to V6 has been working very well. RAM use is around 49-51% according to the dashboard. I have still to carry out a parity check. Not sure if this will increase use or not?? I can confirm that "Ctrl+Alt+Delete" does NOT powerdown the server gracefully as it did in the "Powerdown" plugin. It does in fact reboot the server (gracefully). I found this out one night when I inadvertently tried to shutdown the server using "Ctrl+Alt+Delete" - I have been using this for so long and I was running on auto-pilot - forgot about the power button. 🤣
  14. Disappointing. Doesn't surprise me though as my machine is fairly old. I was thinking that perhaps it would be nice to be able to run a VM of another OS or something so I don't have to run them on my pc. Oh well...who knows what will happen it the future! The next thing is still some extra RAM. As a pensioner, have to be careful of the pennies 🙁
  15. Thank you for this. Makes a lot of sense. Seems it was enabled by default. I have disabled it and there was an option to delete it in V6. I made a backup of all the other folders and files and then made them hidden. At least I don't have to see them. unRAID was reporting my Asus P5B-E does not have Intel VT-x tech - but I found a post that says it must be turned on in the bios. Could be processor dependent though?? I have setup all my security and managed to get it sorted at this point. So good to go. Really appreciate all the assistance. It's been fantastic. Thank you
  16. Hello, I need some further explanation of these extra folders placed on one of my HDD's during the V6 upgrade (appdata, domains, isos, and system.) Not sure if unRAID 6 added them, but I only noticed them after I installed CA. I was told they are part of the new system - and if I didn't want to see them, I should set export to "no" However, export is already set to "no" and they are plainly visible as a user share. Why?? The docker one has a 20gb img file in it. Do I need it? 20 Gb is like 6-10 movies of space. What happens if I delete them? Surely the system is smart enough to re-create them if or when they are needed. If ever? I don't use dockers, so that one is definitely not needed. Any further suggestions? Thanks.
  17. I thought that's what the issue was. One day I'll get changed over to xfs. I have re-seated the HDD and the cables. Probably too early to see any change if one is going to happen. I'll keep an eye on it.
  18. Thanks for telling me that. I didn't know you could see it. At least its on for me now. Good point on the RAM. I'll do some reading. Thanks
  19. @Frank1940 - MB manual is a good idea. Should have thought that myself. Doh! As the the "dockers" part - you are clear this is an English forum aren't you 😁. I have a lot to study up on. I'll try and sort out my RAM first. That'll mean some time as I'll have to import it. I've had a very quick look at the dockers (I have installed CA), but I didn't see anything that I was initially interested in. A lot of the names are meaningless to me anyway. Need to spend some time learning. I've only ever written to the disk shares (actually never thought of writing via the user shares). I like to put my content where I want it. I have thought about turning export on and off on the disk shares, but it adds another level of complexity I'm not sure I want (or remember). I'll give the login window in explorer a go without checking that box. I guess once I login into the disk share, it'll stay open for that session (meaning until I reboot). I have to setup the security levels as well., but that is a matter of time and experiment as it is still all alien to me. Never did know about the disk shares bug (but I'll try and keep it on the radar). Memory isn't what it used to be!! 😭 You will probably see I figured the signature thing and it is now on. Thanks muchly.
  20. @Hoopster - thanks to the insight. I looked for that signature setting and didn't find it. Now I have it turned on. Kudos to Frank for this as well. My server has 2x 1gb RAM sticks (2 slots still empty). I am thinking I will get 4x2Gb sticks (total 8gb) to future proof. Do I need to worry about the numbers in the RAM - like 667, 533, etc. Cost is ALWAYS a factor? As for dockers, I don't really know what they are used for - or how I can use them. Lots of people here have really tricky systems - way beyond my technical level. I always wanted something simple - but things change and perhaps a docker can offer something I haven't considered.
  21. @testdasi - all very good points. All my drive are WD (mostly green, a few reds), but the last one I brought was a Seagte as it was cheaper than the others. I've had a good run out of WD. Once the Seagate was in the server, I noticed a strange little noise when a drive spun up or down. I'm assuming it is the SGate. Currently have a high error count on the Sgate (have another post), but it's debatable if this is an issue or not. The WD drives don't have the same smart registers as the Sgate. Appreicate the input. Cheers
  22. here I thought this was the case, but this was doing it even when the drive was only half full - even when the space on the drive was more than this. AS I said above, would like to migrate away, but it'll take more expense and some planning. Currently all my SATA ports are used. I need a spare slot to format a drive as xfs. Maybe some day. Waiting to hear back what the supplier thinks of this suspect drive. Edit: I was reading another thread and more websites today (Having more time) and the unRAID thread mentioned an ill-seated SATA cable. I'll re-seat the cable, but I also have hot swap boxes, so I'll re-seat the drive as well. Perhaps this will help?? 2nd Edit: As I suspected, the drive supplier got back to me with an RMA request - they want the drive back before anything is done. I can't send the drive back until I have a replacement - and there is also the possibility it isn't even defective. I'll re-seat the cables etc and see what the result is first. I did find this link here which is interesting. I think I'll listen to the advice and take a wait and see attitude.
  23. Yes. All my server is. I would like to migrate away to xfs (don't really know what this is), but it will take some effort.
  24. Greetings, Just wondering what hard drives people are using. Most people seem to go for the cheapest (that's my response), but is one brand better than another?? I've had a really good run with WD greens (EARX, EFRX) (2,4 and 6tb). My last drive was a Seagate ST6000VN0041 ...but it's suddenly showing some unusual numbers on some of the fields under smart. I've requested a replacement. Seems some of these drives are better rated for NAS options than others. I've been freaking out how expensive they are - especially some of the smaller sizes now. Makes it real expensive to have a spare on standby. Looking at my options here in New Zealand, I found something called a WD Purple. HDD manufacturers sure like colours? Are there any preferences? Does rotational speed make any real difference? Cheers
