  1. I DON't believe this!! This time I shutdown both the server and the PC (last time I rebooted) and now Disk11 is back as it should be. Something is definitely trying to mess we me! Lets see how things go. Thx for the help.
  2. Okay, I've been looking further. If I click under "Network Places" "Entire Network -->Microsoft Windows Network -->MsHome -->MediaServer -->A List of all the shares. Under here Disk11 doesn't say "Disk share" under comments - and when I click on it says Disk11 is not accessible. Now...if I go back to "Network Places" and Click on Disk11 - it also says Not accessible - whereas everytime before it showed an empty folder. How do I make Disk11 say "Disk share" again?
  3. (i) Tools tab is where? Unraid or Windows. I think I remember something in unraid. (ii)I'll look this up. Never heard of it.
  4. No to this question. I only ever copy disk to disk. Although, I can still see all the movies in one big share \\Tower\Movies. So if I copy from here I can loose them all? (Via Windows Explorer). I've re-read your post a while ago about this issue, but That seems to be more about copying from say \\Tower\Movies --> \\Tower\Movies. What about copying from \\Tower\Movies --> \\Tower\Disk7\Movies (or perhaps use a temp folder like \\Tower\Disk7\Temp) so it doesn't get confused?
  5. Yes...I did reboot the PC as well. This is a first for me. I'm really stumped! This is the last phase of transferring all the data from my small disks so I can remove them from the array.
  6. Greetings, Seems I'm going through an "Issue" Stage with my server! I was in the process of copying some files from one disk to another. I have all my disks setup in "Network Places" (Winxp) so I can easily access them. I stared the copy, then saw the connection was only 100mbps, so I cancelled the copy by hitting the cancel button (I'd only started copying the first file). Rebooted the server and got a 1Gbps connection, then when back to my Disk11 Network place Folder and it was empty. Nada!! Funny thing is, the disk is still full according to unraid. Further, the folder icon on that disk via unraid shows all the movies. Also, my media player can play all the movies on that disk. And under \\Tower\Movies all the movies are shown there as well. But browsing directly to the disk11 folder shows it as empty. Further I have tried to setup a new network place (Same thing) Empty. I have checked to make sure the files aren't hidden - they're not. I have cd'd to \mnt\disk11\Movies directly from the server and all the movies are there. If I browse to the disk11 via other sofware (like PowerDVD) - still see an empty share. I have rebooted both machines. Still nada. Anyone have any ideas on what has happened? Thx.
  7. I think the network port only gave 100m because I unplugged it and put it back in while it was going. Yes, network switch is gigabit - in fact the whole system is. DHCP pool is 64-253 (all the same subnet). Unraid is a static IP. A reboot (vs a powerdown and restart) got me connected again last night. I have gigabit connection again. I have yet to start it again this morning to see what it's doing. Several things I notice. During the powerdown sequence the server emits single beep. This isn't usual. I can only assume this is an unraid thing because the manual for my Mobo only lists beeps at start. The other thing, I realise now that on a normal start-up using "IFCONFIG" returns both an "eth0" and a "lo" listing when connected. When I use "IFCONFIG" and it hasn't connected I only get a "lo" listing. Not sure what this means. Is there any way to assign an IP once unraid has started? I figured later that perhaps the network card I found isn't compatiable with unraid (drivers??). Can someone suggest a NIC that works with unraid if I need to go down this path. Thx
  8. My PC IP is different. I operate on a mixture of DCHP and static. As an added note, the unraid server makes a beep when it shuts down (something it doesn't usually do). Not sure what this means. Since this post I found another network card and installed it. While I never got a connection via that device, when I started the server again, "IFCONFIG" showed as it should. I plugged the network cable back into the MoBo port and got a connection - but only 100mbps - while I should be getting 1000. Very strange. I think what trurl was asking was whether you PC is on the same subnet as your server. eg: is your PC's IP address 192.168.1.5? or is it 192.168.2.5? Yes...all on the same subnet. I have turned it off and back on and now there is no connection again. Really annoying!

  10. Hello, Suddenly I can't seem to connect to my server. This has happened in the past but a restart has rectified the issue. In this case, when I type "Ifconfig" at the cmd prompt I get a return that shows a generic inet add (like 27.0.0.1)(or something like that) When I enter "Ifconfig eth0" it gives a return showing my static IP. I have reseated the network cable. Rebooted both the router and network switch. Not sure what else to do. I have included the syslog. Thx syslog-20150408-114422.zip
  11. My replacement WD Red 6Tb drive went in today and parity is re-syncing as I type. I'm real please the system recognised the new 6Tb drive. Now all I need to do is wait to 30+ hours it'll take, then run a parity check at the end of it. Thank you all for the assistance. I'll mark this post as solved.
  12. So does this WIDDLE3 include something to boot the USB drive, or does the OS do this? What I'm asking is...Is WIDDLE3 the only file you put on the USB drive and your windows puter boots to DOS via the USB??
  13. Thx. Those are nice. Couldn't find any listed locally. I'm in the process of reducing server to 8 drives. So 3x 3x5 - gives me one extra slot. Good for a preclear. I like the idea of only 3 HDD's in a unit as the drives should run cooler.
  14. Thx guys for the imput. I'm in New Zealand, so all those off-shore sites, while great, are out of the question - too long to receive. Locally, most things are overnight, or two days. Anything off-shore is at least two weeks or more. Most SATA cables here are at least $5.00+NZ for the basic type. The Lian ones at $20NZ which includes free shipping and a 4 year warranty is a good deal. Rule of thumb - In New Zealand, we're robbed blind! Not quite sure what this ref means. Is this a similar hot-swap type thingee that holds more drives??
  15. Hey Gary, can you expand on this? Usually I just copy across the network (windows SMB) using explorer from one disk to another disk. Does this ISSUE happen doing it this way? I don't usually type any paths in, but nail down through the folders to specific disks. As trurl noted above, you're fine if you're going to specific disks. The key is to be sure you're specifying the specific disk -- NOT just the user share. It's a complex issue ... and not likely to be fixed anytime soon (it's debatable whether it's actually a "bug" or just a side-effect of the way Linux file systems work). The issue has been discussed a good bit here: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=34480.0 I outlined it in one of my posts like this: "... The problem, in a nutshell, is that the user is copying a file from what is logically the same "drive" onto itself ... i.e. a copy from \\Tower\disk1\MyDVDs to \\Tower\MyDVDs is effectively the same thing as copying a file from \\Tower\MyDVDs to itself. Most OS's will not allow this, or will automatically append a suffix to the filename to differentiate the two files. But since the two references are different, the "copier" (whether it's a Windows, Mac, or Linux utility) doesn't realize that's what's happening. ... and the user simply isn't thinking about that. " What happens, due to the way the file system works, is that the file becomes a zero length file ... i.e. all of the data in it is LOST !! The issue is trivial to avoid -- if you want to move a file that's in a user share from one disk to another just do it using the disk share references. (which I believe is what you're already doing) Thx. Wow...always amazed at what you guys know. That's the trouble with coming to puters late in life - too much to learn and not enough time to do so with other responsibilities. Always appreciated.
  16. These Lian units don't come with SATA cables (pity) - only the cable to power the fan. I was told they are 215mm deep from their face. I am looking at a 4xpack of coloured Lian SATA cables (0.85m long), which have locking connectors (something my current ones don't have). They are only 3Gb/p cables. Do I need 6 Gb/s cables?? I think only one drive I have does 6Gb/s and the Mobo is old so that is doubtful.
  17. Excellent. I haven't used this part of the software before. Always learning something new. Thank you for all the comments.
  18. Trurl - good points. My concern is if a data drive dies while the parity sync is in progress. It would mean you don't have valid parity info to rebuild it. Therefore, you would need to put the old one back in. But I don't know the process to make it work. This is especially valid when you look at my parity upgrade thread. I did it the way I always do it. The new drive was faulty, so I just put the old one back in and everything was fine. Then, after reading some stuff here, and the posted replies, I thought I'd done something wrong, so gave it another go. This time when I did it, I un-assigned the parity drive. Unfortunately, the new drive was definitely dead, so I had to put the old drive back in - but this time - I got a massive amount of parity sync issues when carrying out a parity check. Seems un-assigning the drive did make a change. Gives my cause for concern.
  19. Will do. Just waiting to hear back from the supplier concerning all my questions. Seems my WD red 6Tb drive was faulty as they are sending a new one. Fingers crossed.

  21. I've been trying to find definitive info on a couple of things regarding a parity drive upgrade. First, I have found several accounts of how to upgrade the parity disk - none of which are like I've done it in the past. I thought I was done as follows... 1 - Parity Check. 2 - Power down server and replace existing parity with new parity HDD. 3 - Power on Server 4 - Array is stopped at start-up recognising old parity is missing (Changed). Assign new drive using the drop-down-box. 5 - Parity Sync. 6 - Parity Check. This is using 5.0.5. Now it would appear the consenus is to unassign the old parity drive first...but this invalidates the parity info on that drive. So...if a data drives fails during parity sync, how to you use this old parity HDD to rebuild it if the info is invalid? Does the above parity exchange work (1-6), or am I mistaken??
