  1. As a FYI I find Czkawka in Dockerhub works best.
  2. I was wondering if anyone has taken my approach to Unraid and has worked hard to make every drive in their server different? I am up to 12 different drives so far: I like it because when I hit bad models (like the stupid EADS I RMAed 3 times) I only have to replace on drive in the array.
  3. Great wedding gift. Especially if it accidentally has some True Blood on the drives...
  4. My NAS setup is two Unraid servers. Both are based on Antec cases. MediaServer1: This server is based on an EP35-DS3R mobo. This mobo has 8 sata ports onboard, with 2 being J-Micron. Unraid EP35-DS3R intel Core 2 Duo e4500 1 (for now) x 1GB DDR2 667 memory (Kingston) Antec Twelve Hundred Antec 620 Neo Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 ATI 7500 PCI GPU COOLER MASTER GeminII Cooler Master 4 in 3 Scythe SCY-HDSX4 Hard Disk Stabilizer x 3 OCZ Diesel 16GB USB Drive 1 x Seagate Barracuda XT (parity) 1 x 1.5TB WD Green (EADS) 1 x 1.5TB WD Green (EARS) 1 x 1.5TB Samsung EcoGreen 1 x 2TB WD Green (EARS) 1 x 2TB 7200RPM Hitachi 1 x 2TB 5950?RPM Hitachi I built this server second. I credit other builds here for the suggestions for most of the parts. Each bay is a different kind of HD to 100% take advantage of Unraid's amazing mix and match ability and I hope to keep it that way. I have a 2TB 5900RPM Seagate that is going in as soon as I get the firmware straight. MediaServer2: This server is based on a P35-DS3L mobo. Honestly this is an odd mobo to use for Unraid as it only has 4 onboard sata ports, but I had it left over from a previous Hackintosh build so I wanted to not waste it. Unraid P35-DS3L Intel Pentium e2140 2 x 1GB DDR2 667 memory (Kingston) Antec Three Hundred Antec 420 Neo 3x Sil 3132 cards Nvidia Fanless 7300 GS GPU Scythe Mini Ninja Fanless CPU heatsink Cooler Master 4 in 3 San Disk Cruser 2GB USB Drive 9 x 1.5TB 7200.11 Seagate drives (yes THOSE drives) 1 x 1TB Western Digital Black I am using the second to most recent bios (F8) to avoid HPA problems. I am using the six internal 3.5inch bays, plus a Cooler Master 4 in 3 in the top bays for a total of ten drives. All the drives in the server will be the infamous 1.5TB 7200RPM Seagate drives, except for one that is a 1TB WD Black (that I basically got for free so why not use it?). Average temps are 27-30, but it gets up to a top of 35 when copying over data. My favorite part about this build is that because I am using a fanless CPU HSF and GPU, it is pretty quiet. Everything is Antec where possible (I am kinda nutty loyal to them), but because the built in drive trays lacked any sort of vibration management I used rubber washers to secure the drives. This server holds only movies for me.
  5. I use handbrake. Full settings: http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/topic/5176-handbrake-settings-for-plex/
  6. Umm, there aren't any non-Edge Lit LEDs in Samsungs in the lineup currently. Some say because Samsung lost a lawsuit to Sharp regarding the technology: http://www.marketwatch.com/story/sharp-wins-us-suit-against-samsung-over-lcd-patents-2009-11-10 Maybe models coming out in the fall of this year will be Full Array LEDs, but until then on the Full Array LED-front its all Sony, Vizio, and LG's game. Unless you want a older model: http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-UN55B8500-55-Inch-1080p-HDTV/dp/B002HDZNSC
  7. I have found that by re-encoding (shrinking) my Blu Ray rips with handbrake often 24p judder is made much better. The "picture tears apart" effect goes away...
  8. I just recently got a 50 inch Samsung 3D Plasma TV that can play mkv files over the network. I mostly use that feature to play Half SBS 3D content from my Unraid server (using mediatomb). I use XBMC for everything else because the interface is much better (more wife friendly) and the TV can't output anything more than stereo from mkv files. I think all Samsung TVs have this limitation, so be careful. A dedicated media player is a better bet.
  9. The deal is too good. I bought one to add to my Unraid box.
  10. Be careful. If you have a large library your thumbnail folder could blow away such a small SSD. My Thumbnail folder is like 6gbs already, plus the system files and that SSD is full. Now the 16gb SSD on the other hand shouldn't get full unless you are the largest media pirate ever.
  11. I think now this is the premier ION system-fanless, a DVD drive to install and OS, silent: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16856101114R&cm_re=shuttle_ion-_-56-101-114R-_-Product And its on sale open box.
  12. It is crazy how fractured the XBMC community is for distros. With that said I use a custom XBMCbuntu configured for HD PCM audio and including the PVR branch....
  13. I guess I forgot to mention that I already have a Hauppauge 2250 dual tuner that I would like to reuse. I could buy a HD Homerun but it does not have analog support. That is the reason I went with the 2250 to begin with. I have Time Warner Cable so my clear QAM channels are very limited (basically anything that is not OTA is encrypted) so most of my recording right now is via WMC7 using the analog tuners. It looks like the analog driver support for the 2250 is finally starting to materialize in Linux so I'm planning on switching to mythtv in the near future hence the interest in vdpau and the 9300. I think TVheadend supports that tuner which means that in the future you will be able to use it with XBMC's PVR branch...
  14. The Night skin allows for custom home menu options: http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Comparison_of_skin_features
  15. This. I have less movies than you by a little, but they are all HD so they take up WAY more space (and network resources) and yet User Shares still works perfect for me up to 5 clients. I also second getting a SSD in the HTPC. Otherwise loading the fanart of 1800 movies is painful...
  16. I second the HDhomerun. That things rocks, I have two. I also will add- the HTPC will be way more awesome with a SSD OS drive....
  17. That is one area where Plex rocks: Plex also by far does the best job with streaming media (aka Hulu, Netflix, etc.). It literally makes Boxee seem like a joke. The only reason I don't use it anymore is I like 8 channel PCM (aka HD audio) but I don't want to spring for a new Mac Mini that can do that. But seriously for a lot of people nothing beats Plex. Too bad its locked into OSX (but that is probably why it is so darn easy to use)....
  18. XBMC Its interface blows everything else away....
  19. I want to hear what the Unraid gurus think about this: I think you should NEVER put a Green drive as your parity drive unless you plan to ALWAYS use the EXACT same Green drive to fill the whole server. I think even if you plan on getting different kinds of Green drives, you need to still get a 7200RPM parity drive. My thinking is in the future Green drives will be as fast as 7200RPM drives are today. Happens all the time- my 2TB WD Green drive destroys my first gen 1TB 7200RPM Seagate for speeds. That same first gen 1TB Seagate is buried my my newest 7200 RPM 1TB Seagate. Heck, even my 2TB EARS WD drive gives my 2TB EADS one a run for its money. So in the future when you DO get that faster model of Green drive not out yet, at least your 7200RPM parity drive won't slow it down. Is my theory sound?
  20. I think for the $70 30GB SSDs we see popping up nowadays most of the cost is the controller. Kinda like how HD's flatline at $50. You can't put anything together at a smaller size for significantly less...
  21. Netatalk has gotten better recently. But I understand what you are saying. Have you considered using NFS? OSX being a Unix has decent NFS support.
  22. Adding AFP to Unraid would be a big deal because the SMB part of OSX has stagnated since 10.5 and performance between an Unraid box and a OSX box is dismal. With that said I only use OSX desktops and laptops, so for now I just put up with the slow speeds. I can't wait for version 5 though....
  23. I have messed with the Crystal HD card in XBMC. The decoding is so much less robust than ION+VDPAU it is not even funny.
  24. You know what I am gonna say: Antec Nine Hundred (Two)!!!! You know from experience the airflow in an Antec case rocks, and you need that without front fans. If I could do it again my 300 build would be in a 900.
