  1. I think it would be rather handy honestly. I don't care if it displays basic html and nothing fancy. Sometimes it just helps to serve up a page or some files for those odd rare occasions.

Start adding in more functionality and its just gravy. ;)

  2. Yeah. In the management gui just make sure that under your shares that in the disk shares your USB is set to export read/write.

You should be able to copy/acess the flash typically via network neighboorhood or what ever the mac version is. In windows I often type \\tower and the run prompt which of course gives me network access to anything on my network. Either way you access your flash drive when you access it the root of your flash drive just happens to be the /boot directory. I only mention that because it took me a while to wrap my head around that.

  3. That makes complete since. When I rebuilt a flash drive a while back the /boot folder was missing too, which meant well it had an issue. ;)

Unmenu is really easy just follow the howto that Joe L shows for google code.

Just make sure whatever you install and you want to always run on reboot that you click the button after install to "Install after reboot" If you don't you can play around with things and if you are not sure you want it later just don't click it. Its kinda cool actually.

    As for the preclear script

    http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=2817.0

I personally created a folder called scripts in my /boot folder so basically /boot/scripts, but I'm sure where and how will differ from everybody, but that is just how I did it.

In English when you look at your drives in the http://tower/devices.htm

Look at each drive. More than likely if they are sata they will have a prefix of sdX for example this is my setup.

    sda - parity

    sdb - 1.5tb

    sdc - 1.5tb

    sdd - 500gb

    sde- 500gb

so with my drive "not" added to the array I would of typed something like this.

    preclear_disk.sh /dev/hda

The great thing about Linux is you can run it from about anywhere. So lets say you are sitting at the root of your USB stick which should be /boot You could type /boot/scripts/preclear_disk.sh /dev/hda or whatever drive you are trying to clear.

I personally like to clear each one of my drives at console directly on the machine opposed to using telnet because that way I can walk away from the machine while it does its thing and I don't have to worry about having another machine involved. If you want to run the script on two drives just use the ALT+F2 key which will give you another terminal window. Then of course you can use ALT+F1 to get back to the first window.

Just to let you know you can type "exit" to close a terminal down when your no longer using it. Its kinda important to know because after you assign a password in either the Gui interface or by typing "passwd" in console it keeps others from using your machine because the password has been changed opposed to letting anybody use your machine if that's a concern.

  4. Yeah you can do pretty much everything via console, but the gui interface is the way to go because its pretty simple. Http://tower

Just make sure when you first login to your system you go into Settings

    Identification -

Workgroup - From there I would personally change your workgroup to whatever you are using on your system. For instance all my machines long time ago when I was a gamer all got put on the workgroup of "game" so I set this one to the same.

    Network settings -

Obtain IP Address Automatically: - I personally don't like my servers running DHCP so I told it to use a specific IP address. When you first look at that page it will be DHCP and if you don't know your settings when you goto change it just note your gateway, subnet mask and DNS from there it should be pretty self explanatory.

    Disk settings -

Default spin down delay: Its defaulted to 1 hour and you can change it to whatever you want. After you have some drives attached you can click on each drive from the Main area and then decide how long each drive should stay up independently or select which spin up group each drive belongs to. Meaning if you want a couple drives to spin up at the same time you can put them on the same group. Why would you do that? Well if you have all your movies on say Disk1 and Disk2 you can have them both spin up when either is accessed to keep the spinup delay time from switching from one to another. I don't mess with that personally because I'm rather patient.

To keep your sanity make sure you use Joel L preclear_disk script because it makes getting the drives ready so much easier. http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=2817.0 If you do not then you will have to sit there and wait who knows how long while the system takes the array down and preps a drive. What I did because I was playing around was throw two drives in the system and let the array take it self down. It of course lasted I'm going to guess maybe 15-30 minutes and got things ready. I then played around with one drive as a parity drive and the other as a data drive. When I was ready to get serious I then used the preclear_disk script to prep my real drives. It took I'd guess 25-37hours depending on the drive, but it beat up the drives and I'm sure they are about as error free as they can be.

Some test drives I used prior I knew one of the drives had issues and sure enough it found them pretty quick so I'm rather confident in Joel L's script.

  5. When I had a cache drive I set it to two hours and everything else 1 hour.

I have one drive which for me is disk4 that I put working files directly on it opposed to via a share I setup as a 2hour delay so if I walk away its there still running. I thought about changing it to 4hours, but its been fine at 2 for now.

The reason I don't leave it all running is I don't need 6 drives spinning for the sake of spinning when as of now I'm 1,000 miles away from home on a trip and id rather the UPS have the extra battery protection than the convience of walking in and have an instant fix.

As for watching movies I use XBMC and when I scroll through all my movies its quick since everything is cached on my HTPC so there is no delay when it comes to finding what I want. When I click on a video to play there is a few second delay, but honestly id rather have that delay than getting up and loading a disk.

  6. Yes you will have to format your drive in order for it to run on the unRAID system. Personally and I do mean personally I would grab a second 1.5TB drive since you said you are running out of space and install your 2TB drive and your new 1.5TB drive together and then copy over your data then when complete add your old drive into the array so you would have future expansion.

On NewEgg drives seem to be pretty cheap right now and depending on what you plan on running you could pickup a drive pretty cheap. The only thing I wouldn't want to do if I was you is try and scrape up space here and there and transfer just to transfer back. I'm sure many have done that, but like you said you take the chances of loosing data or corrupting data.

As for external drives I've not tried it and can't field that question, but I'm sure somebody will. ;)

  7. There are a few settings in SMF that could cause issues.

In SMF do you have the box checked to "Use a persistent Connection" which would speed up the forum, but at the sametime would kill the server.

and you could turn off Hostname Lookups so it doesn't constantly look for the users hostname

Other than that users with Avatars the server is polling that address to display the images, but not knowing exactly what they are complaining about it makes it really difficult to even begin.

  8. Normally your DNS settings can be made in http://tower/settings.htm and I would guess that since you've downloaded unMENU that your DNS is in fact working.

You could try basically just copying all of your email settings and try using the default settings for a gmail account to make sure its truly mailing out. I just happen to use gmail so it was really easy to use. Then from Gmail I just forwarded my email to my phones account. Since my phone works with Gmail anyways.

Forward "root" email to: [email protected]

    E-Mail Server: smtp.gmail.com:587

    Use TLS?(YES/NO): Yes

Mail ID: myemail <------ Note no @gmail.com

    Mail Password: mypassword

    Mail Domain: [email protected]

    From Line Override (YES/NO): YES

Not the most elegant way of doing things, but it would at least give you something to chew on while your trying to figure out your settings.

  9. Heres my current setup.

    1.5TB WD 7200RPM

    1.5TB WD 7200RPM

500G WD Variable 7200 RPM nonsense

500G WD Variable 7200 RPM nonsense

    I normally get around

18MB/s upload from another NAS with Parity and I've seen it spike up to around 24MB/s

26MB/s upload directly from my PC. Its not constantly that speed, but its normally in the 20's

39-41MB/s download with of course Parity

Are you running any funky type of Anti-Virus or any software firewall software that might be picky?
