Hi all, I am currently in the process of building out my new UNRAID configuration and need some input on different CPUs from people with the same use case as mine. I used to run an old HP DL380 Gen 9 with 2 Xeon E5-2680v3s and some slow SAS drives. The issue I had with that setup was extensively slow IOPS when running multiple VMs/Game servers/Docker containers. The current plan is to upgrade to PCIe Gen 5 with a fancy Asus card that can bifurcate and x16 slot into x4x4x4x4 and run 4 PCIe Gen 5 M.2 SSDs at full speed with a cache drive. The thing about that setup is that it requires a good amount lanes. Something only higher end consumer grade/server grade CPUs can support (especially if trying to go Gen 5). I have since narrowed it down to a couple options - Ryzen 7950X3D, Ryzen 9950X3D, Threadripper 7960X, or maybe some intel options. My issue comes with looking at the X3D CPUs. They have the thread count and support Gen 5, but what about performance when running what I wanna run. I plan on running a plethora of game servers, docker containers and VMs for labbing. From what I hear, game servers really thrive off single threaded workloads. Also, just to mention cause I see a lot of talk around this - I don't run plex, sonaar, etc. Just game servers, docker containers, VMs to host various services. Any input is appreciated. Thanks!
