  1. I tried TB on Unrais with no success. I’m using it with no problems in True Nas. It’s great using it as both DAS and NAS, specially for media editing. Most new commercial NAS systems now come with TB…
  2. And in the name of fairness, in Unraid, virtual machines were a breeze to setup and use. In TrueNAS, I can´t make them work properly, can´t even install Ubuntu. In OMV Thunderbolt worked, but when the machine went to sleep it would not wake up unless I rebooted the machine...so, every system will have its quirks, its a matter of finding out the best one for a specific scenario, unless you're a Linux wizard, which I´m definitely not...
  3. Can’t speak for others. For me it worked right away. Connected the cables, configured a separate subnet and voila, appears as a SMB connection, with speed over 2gigs/sec…
  4. Thats the main reason I went to TrueNas in my main server and kept the Unraid as backup. Thunderbolt just works, and I get excellent speed for video/photo editing…now I wonder if I setup Ubuntu as virtual machine inside Unraid, I’ll be able to use the TB inside the VM…
  5. Isn’t Unraid supposed to go Debian instead of Slackware some time soon? I thinks I read something about it…would it solve the problem?
  6. I know I wouldn’t gain much by adding an extra gig, it’s more about the theory…because soon it may be 2.5 x2 and then it works be meaningful…
  7. Ok, so I was searching for it and couldn´t get a clear answer...I have a motherboard with 2 NICs, one 2,5gbe (that I'm currently using) and one unused 1gbe. Unmanaged switch. If I also use this other NIC with one of the modes below, will I get a 3,5gbe connection? Setup is Bonded. tks!
  8. How can I install kio-extras so my Krusader will support SMB? It does support SMB in my other server with Unraid, same version, but not on this one...searched in the Krusader site, says it should be this...go figure... Guess life will be easier once Unraid migrates to Debian...
  9. I don´t understand. My system has Thunderbolt. Driver is installed, I see it in Tools-System Drivers... As you can see below, it´s active, when I connect external TB cases it´s found by the system, it even see the vendors names, etc...but nothing shows in Unassigned Devices...this is driving me nuts... it also does not show as available network interface... Any ideas??? Andre Drivers: thunderbolt. 10. Yeah, I’m in the process of doing it…in a couple of days I’ll know…I hope the TB card shows up…somewhere in the UI… I’d hate to try doing on the CLI…rsrs
  11. Humm, I see… the fear I have is not being able to configure Thunderbolt in Unraid to direct connect my Mac…searching the forum and asking around I could get no definite answers about it…aside from that I’m comfortable with Unraid…
  12. Humm...I´ll take that into consideration...Core or Scale? How was is the change? Always heard True NAS is harder then Unraid...was that your experience? I´m no linux geek...
  13. I´m wondering...the idea of having a cache pool (or single disk) is to accelerate the work and then at some point transfering the files to the protected array, I get it. But... My system will store photography/videos in one 4TB name and documents in another 2TB NVME. I'll have an array with 4tb party and two 3TB dives, 6tb storage . I´m planning my setup as such: NVMEs to store/work on. Every night this disks are copied/synced with the array using rsync in the crontab file. The hot/cold storage strategy... Questions: 1. Under these circumstances, does it make any sense to have a cache pool? I´m already working on the fastest disks possible... 2. I´m still in doubt if the array will be XFS or BTRFS, but about the single NVMEs...the 4TB one is currently in APFS format...I can install it as an Unassigned Drive in this format and live it so...will I really gain anything by converting it to XFS or BTRFS? It will be a PITA but doable...speed will be the same I guess because the bottleneck with be the network/thunderbolt connection, but maybe stability would be better in a native format? The other NVME is in EXT4, so Linux native is stable enough? I´m about to build it, so any comments will be greatly appreciated! André
  14. Yes it is…I’ll investigate what you just pointed out when I get home and get back here…thanks!
  15. After looking a lot for an app with an UI I can use to make scheduled backups from my share to and external USB drive every night while I’m sleeping, I found Duplicacy, that seems perfect…but… It supports external drives. Krusader can see my external drive under 2_Unissigned_Devices…Duplicacy cannot… Any experiences with that? I’d really like not to dive into the scripts thing… thanks!
  16. Hello! How did it work for you in the end? I’m going the same way with Unraid, and setting up a server with a motherboard that already has TB4…stumbled on this old post of yours…I made it work in another NAS running OMV and a Maple Ridge TB card, but I’m unsure about Unraid…
  17. Humm…XFS vs BTRFS is one doubt I have…seems like snapshots is a good thing to have (though I never used it…) but as I plan to to backups every night I’m not sure I really need it, and how much stability I’ll be compromising for it…something to consider…thanks for the input!
  18. Hello. So, I’m planning to move my server from Open Media Vault to Unraid, for a number of reasons…anyways, here’s how I’m planning to setup the system to be expandable, see if it makes sense of it would be better to configure storage somehow differently… I’ll use a motherboard with 8x SATA connectors, 4 NVME slots, 10gbe&2.5gbe LAN and dual Thunderbolt 4. i5 12th processor and 32gb RAM with ECC 1x 4TB HDD 2x 3TB HDD (already have them, that’s why…) 1x 2TB NVME 1x 512gb NVME 1x 3TB external HDD So the set up would be: - the 4TB as parity and the 2x 3TB as array (6TB storage). All BTRFS. - 512gb NVME as cache in a single pool. BTRFS - 2TB NVME as single pool (will be for photography, storage and editing) BTRFS. - 3TB external drive for nightly backups of the array. exFAT via Unassigen Devices so I can easily acces data in case of server failure in any system, Linux, Windows or Mac. All connected straight to my MacBook via direct Thunderbolt connection for best possible photo&video editing speeds and to the home network via the NICs… Sounds about right or could be better? With time I can expan the storage as needed… Thanks for you inputs!
  19. Hi all! Didn´t find anything about it searching the forums so... I´ve been running my main server on OMV and the backup one on Unraid, but seriously considering turning the main to Unraid too... On the OMV server (built over Debian) I set up a bridge connection between my MacBook and the server and can mount the server shares over this bridge, so I have a faster connection compared to the 2.5gbe NIC. Works fine. NVMEs in the server. Will I be able to replicate the same with Unraid? Don´t wanna make this huge move and then find out it doesn´t work... Thanks!
  20. Indeed, it was a good idea. Used Crusader to connect the other server samba share and the speeds are much better then using the Mac as middle man. Will keep trying to learn the hard way, for educative purposes... Thanks!
  21. Humm...I´ll study that option too...just trying to learn linux the proper way...
  22. I have an Unraid server named Calango at 192.168.0.185 There’s a folder named FotosAVS at /mnt/disk1. This server has the root and a user named avs. I go into terminal and in the root@Calango:/mnt/disk1# I type ls and can see FotosAVS. I want to transfer this directory to another server in the local network, that runs OpenMediaVault. The folder path I wanna transfer to is 192.168.0.193/srv/dev-disk-by-uuid-80fe6070-e8d8-4f3b-beba-8372a8cda0d7/HotMedia/MediaHot/ So, using scp I tried scp [email protected]:/mnt/disk1/FotoNAS [email protected]/srv/dev-disk-by-uuid-80fe6070-e8d8-4f3b-beba-8372a8cda0d7/HotMedia/MediaHot/ It ask my password. ([email protected]) Password: I enter but it’s not accepted. Then I try: root@Calango:/mnt/disk1# scp FotoNAS [email protected]/srv/dev-disk-by-uuid-80fe6070-e8d8-4f3b-beba-8372a8cda0d7/HotMedia/MediaHot/ Since I’m already inside the directory but it says: cp: cannot stat 'FotoNAS': No such file or directory I check and it’s there… root@Calango:/mnt/disk1# ls FotosNAS/ isos/ So I try with root, it ask for my password, accept it, but says can’t find the directory that is there… root@Calango:/mnt/disk1# scp [email protected]:/mnt/disk1/FotoNAS [email protected]/srv/dev-disk-by-uuid-80fe6070-e8d8-4f3b-beb a-8372a8cda0d7/HotMedia/MediaHot/ ([email protected]) Password: scp: /mnt/disk1/FotoNAS: No such file or directory root@Calango:/mnt/disk1# My ssh is configured to allow user avs to ssh...Tried rsync with similar results… Now any ideas of what am I doing wrong? Jee…it should be easier...rsrs... And yes, I can mount the shares of both servers to my local MacBook and make the copy via Finder, but I´m not sure it's as effective or if I have to keep the Mac turned-on or if once I start the process I can shut it down. Besides, I wanna learn the proper way!
  23. I was connecting my MacBook to the server through a direct 2.5gbr connection (PCIe nic) and the server to the internet through a gigabyte switch (from the onboard gigabite nic). Different subnet masks. All fine. Going forward with my network configuration, I’m trying to have all connections go through the 2.5gbe PCIe card on the server and abandon the on board gigabyte nic. Changed the switch for a new 2.5gbe one. Connected the Macbook to the switch through a 2.5gbe/thunderbolt adapter. Works fine, 2.5 speed. Entered the connection setting of the Unraid server and changed the eth0/eth1 order, so now the 2.5 NIC is eth0 and the onboard nic is eth1. Changed the subnet mask of eth1 from 16 to 24 to match eth0 (not sure about this one, but as now they going trough the same switch now…) Rebooted. Can’t access the login page anymore. (http://192.168.0.150/login) Erased the config.network file from the pendrive, rebooted. Nope… Oh, left the two cables connected for now, want to remove the one from the slower nic...tha´s the whole point. I have saved the network.config file that was working well from the pendrive so I can swap it back if I can´t figure it out... Could really use some guidance here! Thanks all.
