Won’t boot with new SATA cables
I went and checked the included accessories according to Thermaltake and it looks like it was supposed to include 1 molex cable. I’ll see if I can track that down. Thank you!

Won’t boot with new SATA cables
Thanks for the link! I actually had that in my cart but (please forgive my ignorance here) I couldn’t figure out how to plug something like that into my PSU. Here’s my PSU for reference: Any tips for accomplishing that?

Won’t boot with new SATA cables
Yeah, probably not smart in retrospect. I’ve seen this mentioned many times but I have zero clue how I can get a molex adapter for my PSU and HDD combo. What would that look like?

Won’t boot with new SATA cables
Hello all, I’m having a hardware issue and I’m really hoping someone here can point me in the right direction. First, relevant hardware: Asus W680 IPMI ATX Intel 13500 LSI 9208 4 SATA HDDs, 4 SAS HDDs Thermaltake Toughpower PF3 850w PSU I just hit 8 HDDs by adding the 4 SAS drives and the LSI HBA. Unfortunately, to make these compatible I had to use SFF-8482 cables with kapton tape to cover the power disable pin. I have 2 SATA power cables that came with the PSU for a total of 8 connections. 1 is taken by a fan hub. So I have 7 open connections and 8 drives. No biggie, I think to myself, I can just get another 8 pin to 4x SATA cable. Oh, how wrong I was... First I went to Amazon and got a 8 pin to 2x Sata male and then a 1x female to 4x for the drives. Plug that in and the computer refuses to boot and doesn’t even POST. The LEDs flash and that’s it. So then I read about how every manufacturer uses a different pinout and decide I'll look for custom cables. moddiy has some nice silver ones. These are expensive and take forever to ship, but I finally install them today and have the same problem, computer refuses to boot and the LEDs flash. At this point I don’t know what else to do. For now I have 3 of the new drives working to max out what I have available. Is there something obvious I’m overlooking? Do I just need to scrap these custom cables that I paid close to $100 for and just grab a new PSU? I would be extremely grateful for any guidance!

UnRAID on Asus Pro WS W680-ACE IPMI
The ASUS literature makes it sound like they use the same card for other boards, so I think it’s just a cost savings measure. With the mATX I would guess you’re still giving up a 3.0x1 lane.

The IPMI has its own dedicated PCIE slot above the other slots. It’s 3.0x1. But it’s also x1 physically. Not going to get a lot of compatibility out of that. However, I have thought about replacing my IPMI with the new GL.iNet Comet. I’ve had some connectivity issues with the card that get really annoying and I still have to go and physically reset the machine. IIRC the Comet has front panel headers and is USB powered. Kinda ticks all my boxes.

Dang yeah I saw that fine print after I submitted. That’s a bummer.

I’m seeing 5600mt/s? https://www.supermicro.com/en/products/motherboard/x14sae

I’m curious about this too. I could have sworn I remember reading that RAM speed goes down after 96gb on this board? It’s possible I might have imagined that. edit: missing word

Thanks for following up on this!

Interestingly I never had to do the blacklist thing with the ATX version.

ouch. That’s a pretty big deal for anyone reliant on the igpu for quicksync. Was this with the ATX or mitx board?

Anyone with this mobo upgrade to 7 yet? How did it go?

Also worth noting that you would have 4 sata ports with another 4 coming from the slimsas. A lot of people have trouble getting the slimsas to work and you have to buy the cables (if you can find the right ones). Buying an HBA is just easier imo. And it gives you more flexibility. What slimsas cables do you use?

I have the IPMI in the dedicated slot above the 5.0 slots. Have you tried that? I don’t have a HBA, though

I had wondered about the noctuas but was definitely worried about the size. They’re beefy boys and I really wanted one. The Arctic Freezer 36 for $30 is honestly tough to beat though.

Just as a sanity check, I can use SATA drives in a SAS HBA, right? I just need the right cables?

Thank you for this. Very helpful. My pcie 5.0 slots are currently unoccupied but was curious about the 3.0 slot in case I wanted the 5.0 for something else in the future.

Can I stick one of these in the pcie x4 slots?

I’m at the point where I need to expand past my original 4 drives. What HBA card did you end up getting?

Just to confirm, this is the mATX version of the board? These boards are similar enough that it makes it difficult for morons like me to figure out which one is being discussed and I think a lot of you have the mATX version.

I had this, too. And IIRC F6 is an unassigned code in the manual? I don't remember how it resolved, though. Did you turn off fast boot?

I wanted to follow up on my recent build experience with this board. For reference, I have the ATX version. I installed: - Intel 14500k - Arctic Freezer 36 cooler - 64gb Kingston ECC ram - 2 2TB nvme - 4 18tb HDD - IPMI card All in a Fractal Meshify Case Everything went pretty smooth. The BMC is a little janky, but it works well for what I need. Both NVMEs are formatted ZFS and snapshotting to a single ZFS hdd as per SpaceInvaderOne's videos. Other disks are xfs. I also have it working with plex without blacklisting the ast. I installed the intel driver plugin and GPU stats plugin in unraid and I passed /dev/dri through to the container. It seems to be working fine. Plex was my first test. Going to dive into home assistant, tailscale, syncthing, and nextcloud next. Overall pretty happy as a new user to unraid!

Are you ruling out both PCIe 5.0 slots solely due to the height of the card? You might be able to find a riser cable to make both slots accessible.

UnRAID on Asus Pro WS W680-ACE IPMI
Hi all, I’m about ready to pull the trigger on this motherboard but I wanted to clarify one thing about the ongoing ast issue before I do. This is only an issue if I need the IPMI to control the unraid CLI, right? Otherwise I can use the web interface without issue? Are there any other limitations currently? Thank you!
