  1. This is yet another reason why Unraid should transition away from Slackware and adopt a distribution like Ubuntu. By doing so, Unraid can ensure that updates are handled by the distribution itself and remain in a Long-Term Support (LTS) track. This approach would eliminate the need for Unraid users to wait for all updates from Unraid. Instead, Unraid should focus on its core functionalities, such as scripts and the user interface, while leaving the responsibility of distro updates to the distribution. As has been widely discussed here and on social media, this entire situation poses a significant security risk and demands immediate attention from Unraid leadership to address this critical security lapse and explain how course correction will occur immediately.
  2. Yeah it’s common sense that these issues should be automatically handed by Unraid
  3. This doesn’t actually seem to work or be fixed in Beta 3: When either Docker or VMs are enabled, the required predefined shares are created if necessary according to these rules: if a pool named 'cache' is present, predefined shares are created with 'cache' as the Primary storage with no Secondary storage. if no pool named 'cache' is present, the predefined shares are created with the first alphabetically present pool as Primary with no Secondary storage. if no pools are present, the predefined shares are created on the unRAID array as Primary with no Secondary storage. — I have created a zfs encrypted mirrored pool and when I try to go to docker it tells me it failed to start and the reason is Unraid isn’t automagically creating the shares. should there not be a check script to ensure the shares are made? skynet-diagnostics-20241005-1540.zip
  4. Would like to see plugins standardized where there are certain expectations around quality and security and vetting from Lime.
  5. It would be great to see more regular Unraid OS releases. As a current user of Unraid OS 7 and a newer customer, the lack of regular releases is not ideal. While Unraid OS 6 receives numerous minor releases, Unraid OS 7 is not getting the same level of attention.
  6. Would be nice if Lime hired a Linux developer
  7. Fwiw Slackware is not better in performance than Ubuntu or Fedora and absolutely doesn’t have as wide of hardware support.
  8. Switch from Slackware to a major Linux distro such as Ubuntu or Debian for base Unraid OS.
  9. Unraid OS does not come with just the essentials for a NAS; it also includes GUI packages. Most consumer and commercial NAS systems use a barebone Linux setup without a GUI. As a result, Unraid OS runs heavier processes out of the box than a typical NAS OS or even Ubuntu Server. Any OS with both a GUI and a web interface by default is more resource-intensive than Ubuntu Server. Even if this claim were accurate, optimizing Ubuntu Server in a similar manner would significantly enhance both performance and security. Slackware is developed by one part-time developer, whereas Ubuntu benefits from hundreds of full-time paid developers and thousands of unpaid volunteer contributors. Consequently, Slackware cannot compete with major distributions like Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, and Alpine, which have extensive developer teams and expertise. These mainstream Linux distributions are designed for the cloud and for running applications that Unraid OS runs, while Slackware lacks the same level of support and must wait for upstream patches to be integrated. Disclaimer: As a former Ubuntu/Debian developer, I have no vested interest other than seeing the benefits Unraid OS could achieve by using a distribution designed for running containers and VMs, with a focus on performance and security. If Unraid OS is going to stick with Slackware it should hire a full time Linux developer with experience working on server focused distros to come in and tune Slackware.

  11. To be honest, I’m not sure that Unraid OS is lighter than Ubuntu Server. For example, Unraid OS has a GUI process running out of the box, while Ubuntu Server does not. There are many benefits to moving away from Slackware, whether it's to a Debian-based distro or one of the others you mentioned. Security is a significant factor, but there are also advantages like expanded hardware support and features like apport at the OS level. Another great advantage with Ubuntu is that Canonical, which employs hundreds of developers to work on it, also directly collaborates with upstream projects like Docker and ZFS. Slackware simply doesn't have those relationships with upstream projects. At the very least, if Lime won’t consider switching to another distribution, they could make Unraid an application stack that runs on top of any major Linux distro, much like cPanel and many other web apps. This might even be a better idea as it would give users more choice regarding the Linux distro Unraid operates on. As far as I know, there isn’t any product with a community the size of Unraid that uses Slackware. In fact, I'd generally say that Slackware is more of a personal desktop Linux distro and isn't particularly popular for the kind of tasks Unraid performs.
  12. +1 for modern design the current desktop UI is dated in look and not efficiently organized but also needs to be responsive
  13. **Rationale:** Debian and Ubuntu are two of the most widely used Linux distributions with extensive user bases and active contributor communities. Unraid OS currently relies on Slackware, which, to my knowledge, remains a one-maintainer project. This raises concerns about its long-term sustainability, especially since that maintainer will eventually retire. Additionally, Slackware lags behind Debian and Ubuntu in terms of package updates and kernel advancements. Switching to Debian or Ubuntu would bring several benefits to the Unraid community: - Faster updates and broader hardware support - Enhanced security - Potential for significant growth in Unraid OS adoption
  14. I’m looking at options for my homeland and considering Unraid but have the following pre-sale questions. 1. Will Unraid ever allow other base OS like Ubuntu instead of Slackware? For me Ubuntu has been a much more first class experience over the years than Slackware with more fresher packages and very good upstream relationships. Also way more developers working on Ubuntu than on Slackware. 2. Will Unraid be responsive sometime this year or offer an iOS app to manage on mobile?
