New build sanity check
Hi all, What is your budget? 2000 USD How many drives do you want your server to be able to support and how much capacity do you need? 1 x 12 TB drive and 1 parity initially and up to 8 drives eventually Is expandability important to you? Yes If so, what's your long term goal? To use 8-9 drives with HBA card. Are you interested in running additional apps? If so, which ones? Yes, Plex media server, immich, frigate, Home Assistant, *arrs, isos, VMs. What do you plan to run for hard drives? Recertified 12 TB Exos Do you have any spare parts laying around that you would like to apply towards your build? No. If you already have parts in mind, please oh pretty please post links to them so that we don't have to look them up. Upgrading from a crusty Synology 916+ that’s served me well. Usage: Plex server (1-2 4k transcodes), 10-15 docker containers (*arrs, isos, Frigate, Immich), HAOS, 1-2 Windows VMs, recordings for 3 security cameras, and maybe get a graphics card down the line for a light gaming VM (which is why I selected a bigger PSU). Questions: I can get an i5-12600K for about the same price but will have to get a cooler. Is it worth the extra money considering the higher TDP for 24/7 usage? Should I get a separate SSD for the camera recordings to avoid excessive writing on NVME drive? Any other suggestions? I know DDR5 is overkill but where I am located DDR4 motherboards are not available. The case I’ve selected seems to have good air flow and full size PCIE and it supports ATX size PSUs which I like. It also have plenty of space for more storage when I’ll need it and can get a HBA card later. But is there any other case I should be looking at? Will also be getting refurbished hard drives and a Google Coral M.2 for Frigate. Thanks!
