  1. NLS and BUbbaQ.... your Asus boards are running different Intel controller chips... ICH8 and ICH9, I believe... significant?
  2. For lack of a better description.... http://slackfind.net/en/ pretty slick!
  3. The gist of what I've read is that the affected drives were tested at the factories with a certain test program, thus not all drives even from the same factory are affected... were I you, I would only update the one drive. That being said, a link to the diagnostic you mentioned would be appreciated and relevant...
  4. There were reports of people having trouble uploading files recently... maybe Tom's space allocation on the server has been exceeded?
  5. One more vote for the Kingwins.... that don't offer all you ask, but what they do offer is reasonably priced satisfactory performance...
  6. my "main" production key is a 128mb !!! Has all sorts of scripts, unMenu and even BubbaRaid... true, not much space left
  7. # SMART features not available on USB and SCSI devices What do "we" have to do to enable it on "scsi" devices which are actually SATA devices....
  8. easy to say for us guys who read this forum all the time... I'm sure many users out there never even visit the forum once !
  9. Yes.... I often see ths in my many script incarnations...
  10. Currently I have 12 Seagate 1tb drives in my array and I have two spare drives. One is currrently in an external eSata enclosure as a Hot Spare. The other sits on top of the uRaid enclosure waiting. I have room inside the box for two more drives, but the location is not optimal as far as air flow, though drives in there would certainly run under 50°C. What I would LIKE to do is mount the two spare drives in there, but some how make sure they were ALWAYS spun-down until called into action. I would consider them "temporary" spares - new drives would replace the failed ones and the files moved from the "temporary" spares to the new drives and the "temporary" spares erased and spun down. I figured a cron job that would periodically spin down the drive would do.... until it was put into action .... so, the drive as a spare should not be formatted and wouldn't be mounted, but once it was being put into the array, it would be mounted... test for that... I'm rambling... anyone listening Also, I think this COULD be automated in the background... the switching to the hot spare, I mean... Any comments? Am I dreaming?
  11. Also look at the DG45ID.... it's a VERY solid reliable board ... I trust it so much that I put one in the new box I put together for "She Who Must Be Obeyed"
  12. I wonder if it would be a good idea to have a place to list the Brand/Type of flash drives that people have had problems with... I've had similar problems with a Sandisk Cruiser/Micro 256mb. Yet I have a Sandisk Cruiser/Micro 512mb that's never given me a problem, though I've never used it as a boot drive.

  15. Journalling files systems and numerous "small" files apparently leads to looooong delete times.... I bet if you had left it alone and waited it out, the delete would have completed.
