Thats a new thing but i think you are misinterpreting what it is say.
When you see this you are almost certianly logged in.
Type whoami
and you will see

The general rule of posting bug reports on Beta versions is to test on the latest beta. 4.2-beta4 is out so thats the one to report against.
This saves reporting bugs that may be already fixed

One other factor to keep in mind is unRAID scheme where individual disks are usable outwith the unRAID array. The importance of this cannot be over-emphesised. In a traditional hardware of software RAID array data is extremmely hard or more likely imposible for normal users to recover from a single disk. This means that if the RAID array breaks in some way (and it does happen) you potentially can lose everything.
I say this with some confidence as directly prior to moving my data to unRAID i played with an Adaptec 16 ports SATA RAID card using most of the RAID options. When the array was upa nd running it was perfect but if you similate breaking something it was amazing how many times i couldn't recover the array

Sorry my talk about SATA might be a red herring. I have no idea what the problem the beta fixed or if it is relevant at all to your problem. I only suggest it as a trivial thing to try to see if it helps.
-
Thanks for moving the post that was silly of me.
Yup i understand i can edit the go script or do it manually but IMHO a nameserver should be part of the real config GUI for general users.
-
Thats one of the symptoms i was having with my SATA150TX4 cards. However since i went to the beta whilst my other problems still occur i dont get complete lockups.
Try the latest beta
-
Possibly relevant, possibly not, may be a different chipset than yours, and probably requires a re-compile:
http://www.beowulf.org/archive/2001-November/005395.html
http://www.beowulf.org/archive/2001-November/005396.html
Not relevant to your card, but that config option is already set:
CONFIG_PDC202XX_BURST=y
Thats a pity i was really hoping that was the fix.
BTW, how are you going to get to 16 drives? Are you going to use PATA as well?
Because when i decided to start moving my data to unRAID i purchased many of these cards as they were supported. I have enough to build a couple of systems.
Something you might try is use a Promise SATA300 TX4 as your third controller.
Promise SATA300 TX4 is not that common in the UK and very expensive for what they are (Approx $140 for one card = 4 ports). I also have completely lost faith in promise now. If i buy a new card it will be the Supermicro 8 port card since that halfs my port cost. I need to watch my costs now as with the failure to make the SATA150 TX4 works im essentially binning 8 cards.

Pretty much as title. When setting a staic IP using the GUI allow the optional setting of nameservers.
-
Another option since were talking about tiny amounts of data here is upload to the internet. That gets it completely off site which is always a good thing with backups of any sort.
Wouldn't be hard to do at all.
-
First of thanks for the continuing support, I know how hard it is to remotely support less obvious problems such as this one.
RobJ, the links to the "special" compile options look very interesting and a viable option. Would there be any chance limetech of having this done in the next beta (sorry to ask but doing this myself would be problematic).
When i said using 2 cards is not an option I didn't really mean using 3 Promise cards is the only option rather i need 16 ports. I am more than happy to replace cards etc at the point when it looks very likely that is the only/best solution. I am not adverse to spending money when needed If i can get the driver patch implemented and I can test it (and it doesn't fix it) my next port of call is to look at different cards
-
Using only 2 cards is not an option unfortunately as the only reason i don't have 16 drives is this problem and as soon as i fill 16 i will be building another system to start expand further.
I would be prepared to buy a proper dual XEON system with 64bit PCI cards and redundant power supplies etc etc but i am concerned I will spend all this cash to get to a similar position.

Exactly the same as it is now... 3 cards and 9 drives
The error is sporadic but when it comes it seems come with a vengeance. I can force the error by initialising a parity check apart from that it will run in normal operation all day every day now. I havent had a complete lock up since i went to the beta i dont believe.
-
Drives are connected direct to the cards. I've checked the cables several times but i will try replacing a couple and see. The drives are slid direct into 5.25" slots using 3.5" to 5.25" metal brackets and have plate fans.
-
a polite bump.
Am i at the point where i have to start changing device hardware to see if it the root of the problem? I dont want to start spending more cash unless i need to but will if it helps me and the cause.
-
As a a general rule dont use Word etc to edit files on a Unix box. Not all text files are created equal and it will get you into problems in time.
A good free editor you dont have to install is Notepad ++ from portableapps.com
-
Excellent. This card is quite hard to find where i live however the per port count cost is much lower than a Promise SATA300 TX4 (approx 50%) so it may be an interesting option to some users.

No but according to:
http://www.supermicro.com/support/faqs/faq.cfm?faq=3932
Question
In one of your FAQs I found in the support page; it says that the DAC-SATA-MV8 works in both 64-bit and 32-bit PCI slots. Does this information also apply to the AOC-SAT2-MV8 controller?
Answer
Yes, both will work in the 64-bit and 32-bit slots.

In another thread I am having all sorts of problems with my SATA1 TX4 cards.
So ive started looking for a different manufacturer that produces a viable alternative.
I found a:
Supermicro 8 Port SATA 2 Card (PCI/PCI-X) AOC-SAT2-MV8
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=258223
http://www.supermicro.com/products/accessories/addon/AoC-SAT2-MV8.cfm
Which wont break the bank and "may" be RAID free.
Anyone know if this is a viable option for unRAID users to consider?
Supermicro's SAT2-MV8 SATA controller (based on the Marvell Hercules-2 Rev. C0 SATA host controller) provides 8-port SATA HDD support via 64-bit PCI-X bus interface with high-performance features. Serving as a 2nd generation SATA storage card, the AOC-SAT2-MV8 offers double the data transfer rate of its 1st generation counterpart and offers functionalities for server, workstation and network storage environments in a low-profile PCI platform.

OK slowly I am making some steps forward.
I added the SATA1 jumper to the drive that was creating thousands of errors and added it to the array. Overnight it came back online with zero errors from this drive. There was one of the errors on another drive though which im not surprised about since they are all WD drives. I dont have any more jumpers as they dont come with any so i need to order more and add them to all 9 drives.
I upgraded to 4.2-beta-3 and rebooted. unRAID came online perfectly with zero errors.
Pressed the spin down button and i could hear the drives going to sleep. However then i lost telnet and the network connection completely. I changed my KVM to the unRAID box and started typing the command to look at the syslog. Half way through it my keyboard locked up completely and i couldnt type anymore. Also interestingly my KVM became locked so i couldn't change to another server either.
Any ideas? Should i change from a realtec NIC to a Intel 1000 MT or the like?
Update: I had to hard reboot the server. When it came up it went into parity checking mode and guess what... same dan errors which were gone on the new drive are back.
HELP ! this is driving me mad
-
I pulled the 3rd card.
Exactly the same results... the spin up button does nothing. The spin down button works as expected.
I also tried it is Firefox and IE 6 in case it was something simple but no change.

Torrent clients on a NAS is not a new thing but i wouldnt recommend it. The very nature of them makes them disk thrashers.
If you do decide to use one there is only one command line worth looking at and thats rTorrent but to make it work you will also need something like screen.
-
With all or some of the drives spun up (green solid icon) if i press the spin down button they all spin down (flashing icon and *). I also see entries in syslog like:
Sep 7 08:43:51 NASUser emhttp[1278]: shcmd (18): /usr/sbin/hdparm -y /dev/sda >/dev/null
However if i then press the spin up button absolutely nothing happens at all and zero syslog of any sort are created.
-
lol yes i understand that.
Let me be more specific. With some or all of the drives in a spun down state pressing the spin up button results in none of these drives spinning up. e.g. it does nothing.
Also it creates zero syslog entries.
-
With the current setup of 3.2-beta-2, 3 cards and 8 drives this created no errors at all. The real test will be when i add the 9th drive later today or perhaps tomorrow.
As an aside "Spin Up" seems to do nothing.

Couldnt agree more APC is worth the money. They are not alot to look at but they will be running years after the others for the reason that they keep making parts alone
