  1. I'm running version 4.7. I recently had to take 3 disks out of my array because they failed at the same time. I figured I could live with losing 1/7 (5TB) of my data, and could eventually replace most of it via recovery tools, reripping etc. So I was rebuilding parity with my remaining 17 disks, the largest of are 2 TB. Just at 73.5%, one of the 1.5TB drives began to accumulate errors and writes to parity have stopped it seems. It's currently at 74.5% and the 'main' display of unraid seems to think that parity build is continuing as normal. Here's an excerpt from the syslog, which is mostly repeats of what I've included: Dec 8 20:58:22 MediaServer kernel: handle_stripe read error: 2909546072/3, count: 1 Dec 8 20:58:22 MediaServer kernel: md: disk5 read error Dec 8 20:58:22 MediaServer kernel: handle_stripe read error: 2909546080/3, count: 1 Dec 8 20:58:22 MediaServer kernel: md: disk5 read error Dec 8 20:58:22 MediaServer kernel: handle_stripe read error: 2909546088/3, count: 1 Dec 8 20:58:22 MediaServer kernel: md: disk5 read error Dec 8 20:58:22 MediaServer kernel: handle_stripe read error: 2909546096/3, count: 1 Dec 8 20:58:22 MediaServer kernel: md: disk5 read error Dec 8 20:58:22 MediaServer kernel: handle_stripe read error: 2909546104/3, count: 1 Dec 8 20:58:22 MediaServer kernel: md: disk5 read error Dec 8 20:58:22 MediaServer kernel: handle_stripe read error: 2909546112/3, count: 1 Dec 8 20:58:22 MediaServer kernel: md: disk5 read error Dec 8 20:58:22 MediaServer kernel: handle_stripe read error: 2909546120/3, count: 1 Dec 8 20:58:22 MediaServer kernel: md: disk5 read error Dec 8 20:58:22 MediaServer kernel: handle_stripe read error: 2909546128/3, count: 1 Dec 8 20:58:22 MediaServer kernel: md: disk5 read error Dec 8 20:58:22 MediaServer kernel: handle_stripe read error: 2909546136/3, count: 1 Dec 8 20:58:22 MediaServer kernel: md: disk5 read error Dec 8 20:58:22 MediaServer kernel: handle_stripe read error: 2909546144/3, count: 1 Dec 8 20:58:22 MediaServer kernel: md: disk5 read error Dec 8 20:58:22 MediaServer kernel: handle_stripe read error: 2909546152/3, count: 1 Dec 8 20:58:22 MediaServer kernel: ata1: translated ATA stat/err 0x41/04 to SCSI SK/ASC/ASCQ 0xb/00/00 Dec 8 20:58:22 MediaServer kernel: ata1.00: device reported invalid CHS sector 0 Dec 8 20:58:22 MediaServer kernel: ata1: status=0x41 { DriveReady Error } Dec 8 20:58:22 MediaServer kernel: ata1: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError } The affected disk, md5, is also showing 0C as its temperature. I've never had a problem with disk 5. OT: What I have had lots of problems with is WD Green drives. All the bad drives I've had in the past two years, except for firmware issues with Samsung F4 and a Seagate, have been WD drives. I must have had about 8 bad ones.
  2. Thanks weebotech. I think I'll start with this: Things were kind of hampered by my server being full with 20 drives and no hot-swap bays. I've removed the bad drives and will now add them to the server and see what's going on. Time to google tonight!
  3. I think I'll have to do the same on at least two different drives. How long did it take in total for the 1 TB? I have two 1.5 TB drives and a 2 TB drive to 'fix' If I get this correctly, it should try to make an exact (bit for bit) copy of the drive. If this works for both drives with a similar amount of success as you've had, do you think it's worth trying to add these back to my array and try to rebuild the third drive from parity? Or perhaps try this method on all three drives? Next question: I'm not all that Linux savvy; are there fairly easy to follow instructions included in the package riplinux package? Thanks for sharing your solution.
  4. 69$ for Plus and 119 for Pro http://lime-technology.com/products/registration-keys ;D
  5. This looks great, and something I could use right now. Unfortunately, it seems rather complicated and not something I could use right now. I'll have to do a lot of learning about this.
  6. Thanks for the suggestion - it does sound very much like what I need. I suddenly had three failed drives, and the disk 1 seems a lot like the problem you describe- I couldn't even do a reiserfs check dues to 'a hardware error'.
  7. I finally figured out that you have to run both .exe files as administrator for this to work. Transfer speed is very poor, and there's hardly any feedback during the copying process... but it works! Lord knows how long !4TB of data will take to transfer. GOing to try the riplinux from a USB drive next.
  8. Thanks, Neil. It never worked for me the previous times I've tried to run it. I downloaded it again last night. I'll try it soon.
  9. I've googled, but not managed to find any tools that will let me mount a ReiserFS disk on a Win 7 machine. I've tried with XP and Vista in the past, and never been successful with those either. Is there some utility we can use to see if we can retrieve any info from a failed disk?
  10. I'm in a very similar sounding situation right now. Two drives showed errors and I didn't see this until last night. I decided to replace the drive with the more errors first today, but suddenly a third drive completely red-balled. After a reboot I have three drives supposedly unformatted. I've possibly lost 5 TB of media.
  11. These are my favourite drives, and now..... [glow=red,2,300]They have raised the limit to 5 drives per person![/glow]
  12. I have very similar stats regarding WD green drives that are DOA or are D very soon after preclearing. I've even had RMA'd drives DOA. In fact I still have two to RMA, and another two are showing signs of failure soon judging by the SMART reports and number of errors in the unraid gui.
  13. It looks like seven 5.25" bays unless I'm miscounting.
  14. I was pretty interested in this myself - if he'd been in Manhattan NY. Am I confused or has the original ad disappeared from the forum already?
  15. Did you travel somewhere and he was a no-show? I hope you didn't pay in advance?
  16. Yes, please!! I'd love this to be a possibility!
  17. If someone is willing to pay for shipping, you can bring it to a UPS store. I shipped a Giant Lava lamp from NYC to Seattle packed and shipped for $150. I'm sure this would be an easier ship. Oh I'm willing to pay shipping all right, depending on what that would cost.
  18. I use J. River Media Center. For $50 you get a whole lot more than this ability. Add a few dollars for AirVideo and you have an iphone/ iPad solution too. I've been listening to my entire audio collection at work for a while using this application. With AirVideo, I was able to let my daughter watch her favourite videos from across the Atlantic on my iPhone while we were on vacation in England.
  19. A pity you're in CAlifornia and not in Montreal, CAnada.
  20. Where in Canada are you? I might not be able to resist the package to use as a backup. I'm in Mtl.
  21. Thanks, Nick. I'm slowly but surely copying the important media off the drive first. I have almost 2 TB of it. Unfortunately the disks with significant space on them are numbered higher than 12. So when there are duplicates, unRAID tends to use the lowest numbered drive that has a copy of the file.
