  1. airbender, Don't give up just yet. If you can understand Windows, you can certainly understand unRAID. If you leave now, you will only continue your search for a solution and eventually come back here later. You'll find it doesn't take very much at all to get up and running. Then you can continue to learn slowly from there. I've NEVER experienced an online community more friendly then this one. There is a lot of help here for you.
  2. I've upgraded to v5.0 final. Everything is working great. In the first paragraph of the first post of this thread, Tom states that "There is an upgrade utility on the Utils menu that will download the latest webGui development located on github." I see a "New Permissions" and a "New Config" option, but I don't see an option to upgrade the Web GUI. Am I looking in the wrong place?
  3. I am absolutely amazed at the effort and detail that you guys put into your replies to my questions. Thank you so much for all the good information. I feel very confident now with my future server upgrade plans.
  4. Makes good sense. Thank you very much for the complete explanation. Now, I have to find a 8-port PCIe card to replace my 8-port PCI card. Does anyone listening to this thread have a suggestion they can offer?
  5. JarDo, could you be more specific on the hard drives: how many of each, what size & RPM they are, and which controller each one is connected to? Here are the details of my drives. 6. Something clearly needs adjustment -- that's even slower than I'd expect with PCI controllers. Detail your hardware configuration and what disk drives you're using. That kind of speed sounds like IDE drives with 40-wire cables !! But that's VERY unlikely on a system with an i5. Another thought: Are you running RC16c? There was an issue with > 4GB of RAM in an earlier release candidate that caused very slow speeds. If you're not running the latest RC, upgrade to it and run the test again. Sorry, I forgot to mention that I am running RC16c. I'm guessing that the PCI SATA controller card is my issue Full Details of my hardware config include: SUPERMICRO AOC-SAT2-MV8 64-bit PCI-X133MHz SATA II (3.0Gb/s) Controller Card http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815121009 MSI Z87-G43 LGA 1150 Intel Z87 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX High Performance CF Gaming Intel Motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130694 Intel Core i5-4670K Haswell 3.4GHz LGA 1150 84W Quad-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics BX80646I54670K http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116899 Patriot Signature 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory with heatshield Model PSD38G1600KH http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220570 Other than that, I have an 11-drive 15.5TB system supported with a 4TB Parity drive. 7. Wow, I think I need to make some hardware modifications. I'm not even coming close to the throughput others are reporting. I ran in full auto mode and the best I could get was 18.7 MB/s. I've got a quad-core i5 processor with 8GB ram. My issue must be the HD controller. 8. Oddly, it seems that the failure point is the expansion slots. It seems that anything plugged into an expansion slot is not working. I know the monitor is fine because my server is sharing the monitor via a KVM with another box. Switching to the other machine lights the monitor. Also, all the lights on the switch port are off as if there is no cable plugged in. If I move the cable to the onboard nic the switch port light up. Unfortunately, the onboard nic is a realtek so I still have no network. Any recommendations for a new motherboard?
  9. So, I'm running RC15, but I don't think that is relevant. This morning I noticed that the web interface I had open the night before was down. I tried telnet and ping to no avail. Checked the console and no signal to the monitor. Hmm. No choice but to reboot. On reboot, I can see all the drives lighting up like they are initializing (or whatever it is that they do on boot). But, still no signal to the monitor and no network. I think my motherboard took a dump I don't know what else to surmise.
  10. Hi Joe, That is very interesting and makes a lot of sense. The only thing that doesn't make sense to me is the need to do a Check after a Sync. That, I think, is a very important bit of information that I was not aware of. I've had my server up and running for years now and had always thought that a Sync would always result in the same security as a Check. Thank you for the new info. Now, I'll go and perform that Check!
  11. So... I just replaced my parity drive with a new 4TB drive and completed the Parity Sync. Now, Unmenu (and MyMain) reports that my last parity check was 15846 days ago. Should I be concerned that I have an issue with my server? At the moment I'm not too worried because parity sync completed with no errors. How is this value calculated?
  12. I tested again with both versions. With 5.0rc8a I can 'modprobe r8169 -r' and 'modprobe r8169' to deactivate and activate the nic. You are correct that nothing shows in the console, but these actions are recorded in the syslog. However, with 5.0rc11... these commands have no effect and nothing is recorded in the syslog.
  13. What NIC? I attached the syslog from the roll-back to 5.0-rc8a. In this log it appears that this is the NIC driver that is successfully loading: r8169 Gigabit Ethernet driver 2.3LK-NAPI Running -rc11, please type this command at the console: modprobe r8169 and let me know what it returns. That NIC should be supported by the Realtek r8169 driver. Okay... I tried. There was no result. The command did not fail, but the response was only a return to the command prompt. There was no error or message returned.
  14. What NIC? I attached the syslog from the roll-back to 5.0-rc8a. In this log it appears that this is the NIC driver that is successfully loading: r8169 Gigabit Ethernet driver 2.3LK-NAPI syslog_v5rc8a.txt
  15. rc11 doesn't seem to recognize my network card. ifconfig only shows the loopback adapter. I had the same result with rc10. I rolled back to rc8a and all is fine. I've attached a rc11 syslog if anyone is able to recognize anything that might help me. syslog_v5b11.txt
  16. I'm using a modified version of 5.0-rc8a that works with my Realtek card. I got this version from a member here. This is a snippet from my syslog taken while running 5.0-rc8a that shows a little info about my card: Jan 19 18:23:58 UNRAID kernel: r8169 Gigabit Ethernet driver 2.3LK-NAPI loaded Jan 19 18:23:58 UNRAID kernel: r8169 0000:02:07.0: (unregistered net_device): not PCI Express Jan 19 18:23:58 UNRAID kernel: r8169 0000:02:07.0: eth0: RTL8110s at 0xf8468000, 00:14:c1:4c:38:6f, XID 04000000 IRQ 23 Jan 19 18:23:58 UNRAID kernel: r8169 0000:02:07.0: eth0: jumbo features [frames: 7152 bytes, tx checksumming: ok] Unfortunately, 5.0-rc10 is incompatible with my network card in the same way that the unmodified 5.0-rc8a was. 5.0-rc10 will load, but I can not get to the Web GUI because there is no ethernet. ifconfig only shows a loopback adapter.
  17. I've deleted all traces of my prior install. I placed the .plg files in \boot\plugins I restarted... And then... Nothing. I installed the plugins by executing the following for each: installplg simpleFeatures.core.webGUI-1.0.5-noarch-1.plg And now simpleFeatures is running for me. It seems that these plg files are not executing properly at startup. Investigating my syslog I found the following: Sep 29 11:01:03 UNRAID logger: installing plugin: simpleFeatures.active.streams-1.0.5-noarch-1 Sep 29 11:01:03 UNRAID logger: file /boot/config/plugins/simpleFeatures/simpleFeatures.active.streams-1.0.5-i486-1.tgz: downloading from http://unraid-simplefeatures.googlecode.com/files/simpleFeatures.active.streams-1.0.5-i486-1.tgz ... bad download, deleting Sep 29 11:01:03 UNRAID logger: installing plugin: simpleFeatures.activity.monitor-1.0.5-noarch-1 Sep 29 11:01:03 UNRAID logger: file /boot/config/plugins/simpleFeatures/simpleFeatures.activity.monitor-1.0.5-i486-1.tgz: downloading from http://unraid-simplefeatures.googlecode.com/files/simpleFeatures.activity.monitor-1.0.5-i486-1.tgz ... bad download, deleting Sep 29 11:01:03 UNRAID logger: installing plugin: simpleFeatures.core.webGUI-1.0.5-noarch-1 Sep 29 11:01:03 UNRAID logger: file /boot/config/plugins/simpleFeatures/simpleFeatures.core.webGUI-1.0.5-i486-1.tgz: downloading from http://unraid-simplefeatures.googlecode.com/files/simpleFeatures.core.webGUI-1.0.5-i486-1.tgz ... bad download, deleting Sep 29 11:01:03 UNRAID logger: installing plugin: simpleFeatures.disk.health-1.0.5-noarch-1 Sep 29 11:01:03 UNRAID logger: file /boot/config/plugins/simpleFeatures/simpleFeatures.disk.health-1.0.5-i486-1.tgz: downloading from http://unraid-simplefeatures.googlecode.com/files/simpleFeatures.disk.health-1.0.5-i486-1.tgz ... bad download, deleting Sep 29 11:01:03 UNRAID logger: installing plugin: simpleFeatures.log.viewer-1.0.5-noarch-1 Sep 29 11:01:03 UNRAID logger: file /boot/config/plugins/simpleFeatures/simpleFeatures.log.viewer-1.0.5-i486-1.tgz: downloading from http://unraid-simplefeatures.googlecode.com/files/simpleFeatures.log.viewer-1.0.5-i486-1.tgz ... bad download, deleting Sep 29 11:01:03 UNRAID logger: installing plugin: simpleFeatures.system.info-1.0.5-noarch-1 Sep 29 11:01:03 UNRAID logger: file /boot/config/plugins/simpleFeatures/simpleFeatures.system.info-1.0.5-i486-1.tgz: downloading from http://unraid-simplefeatures.googlecode.com/files/simpleFeatures.system.info-1.0.5-i486-1.tgz ... bad download, deleting Sep 29 11:01:03 UNRAID logger: installing plugin: simpleFeatures.system.stats-1.0.5-noarch-1 Sep 29 11:01:03 UNRAID logger: file /boot/config/plugins/simpleFeatures/simpleFeatures.system.stats-1.0.5-i486-1.tgz: downloading from http://unraid-simplefeatures.googlecode.com/files/simpleFeatures.system.stats-1.0.5-i486-1.tgz ... bad download, deleting Sep 29 11:01:03 UNRAID logger: installing plugin: * Sep 29 11:01:03 UNRAID logger: Sep 29 11:01:03 UNRAID logger: Warning: simplexml_load_file(): I/O warning : failed to load external entity "/boot/config/plugins/*.plg" in /usr/local/sbin/installplg on line 13 Sep 29 11:01:03 UNRAID logger: xml parse error I am receiving the same error as joeshmoe1... 18. I rolled back to 5.0-rc4 and I now have network again. Looking at my syslog I see the following: Sep 19 13:55:25 UNRAID kernel: r8169 Gigabit Ethernet driver 2.3LK-NAPI loaded Sep 19 13:55:25 UNRAID kernel: r8169 0000:02:07.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 23 (level, low) -> IRQ 23 Sep 19 13:55:25 UNRAID kernel: r8169 0000:02:07.0: (unregistered net_device): no PCI Express capability Sep 19 13:55:25 UNRAID kernel: r8169 0000:02:07.0: eth0: RTL8110s at 0xf8466000, 00:14:c1:4c:38:6f, XID 04000000 IRQ 23 The release notes say that the r8169 driver was removed and replaced with r8168 driver. Should I expect the r8168 driver to work with my r8169 card? Or, has my NIC been depreciated from unRaid? I saved the syslog from my attempt to boot into rc8a. In that log I see no attempt to load a network driver at all. (see attached). 20120919_syslog.txt
  19. The file I downloaded was "unRAID Server 5.0-rc8a AiO.zip". Pretty sure I've got rc8a. I tried lsmod, but no such line indicating r8186. I can keep rc8a running a few days longer if there are any other tests that someone can suggest. Maybe I can provide helpful information that might result in improvements that help others. Let me know.
  20. Just installed rc8a. The server booted fine and I have access to the console, but I can not get to the web interface. ifconfig shows that I only have the lo device... no eth1 device. I'm not sure right now how to determine my network card model (it is on-board), but it does appear that rc8a doesn't support my network card. I was running rc4, I'll go back to that.
  21. Thank you Peter & Joe. I was able to find the cause and have fixed my issue. But, the most important thing is that I learned a little bit more about how cron works. The big clue for me was that there WAS supposed to be a file called 'root' at /var/spool/cron/crontabs. Next time I have cron issues I'll have a much easier time finding the solution myself. Cheers!
  22. 'root' should be a file containing all the crontab lines for the root user. No files exist at that location. Should I copy the crontab file that is in my /tmp directory to this location and name it 'root'?
  23. Please excuse my ignorance. For some reason cron configuration has me scratching my head. It worked before and now it doesn't. Peter - I checked... I have a /var/spool/cron/crontabs, but it doesn't contain a 'root' subdirectory. Should it? Joe - I tried as you said. I assume that "cat /tmp/crontab | crontab" should pipe the crontab contents from the /tmp/ location to the root's crontab file (wherever that might be located). But, when I subsequently issued a "crontab -l" the response is still "no crontab for root"
  24. I schedule cron jobs by placing scripts in /etc/cron.daily an /etc/cron.hourly. This has worked for years with no issue. I noticed yesterday that recently my cron jobs have stopped running. I hope someone can help me. The scripts are in the correct location (i.e. /etc/cron.daily) I found the crontab file on my server is located in /tmp and when I cat it it looks Okay. I did notice that if I try to 'crontab -l' I get an error "no crontab for root". This looks like it might be a problem. but, I don't know. Also, I tested by firing the scripts manually. They still do their job with no error. It is just that they are no longer running as scheduled via cron. Please, I could use some advice from anyone with cron knowledge.
  25. I upgraded from b14 to rc1. Everything seems fine for me except for Hamachi. When I attempt to start the service I get the following recorded in the syslog: UNRAID kernel: hamachid[7781]: segfault at fffffff3 ip b76c16e9 sp bfec4ef0 error 4 in libstdc++.so.6.0.13[b762d000+e4000] Hamachi was working in b14.
